If a Percy screenshot is blank, first confirm the page and target element were ready when percySnapshot ran. Percy captures the test browser’s DOM and assets, then renders that snapshot in Percy’s infrastructure, so a correct test-browser page can still produce a bad remote result. Check timing, serialized DOM, asset discovery, JavaScript settings, and Percy’s build diagnostics in that order.
Why Percy screenshots can be blank
Percy’s workflow has separate capture and rendering stages: its SDK captures the DOM in the test browser and discovers the assets needed to reproduce it; Percy then sends that material to its service for rendering across browser and viewport configurations. A blank result may therefore originate before capture, during asset discovery or upload, or in remote rendering. BrowserStack’s Percy troubleshooting guide describes common problems, while its workflow and build-debug documentation explain the stages.

Percy normally renders captured snapshots with JavaScript disabled because scripts have already run and modified the DOM in the test browser. If JavaScript is enabled for remote rendering, scripts may run again against the captured DOM, causing unexpected behavior or a timeout. Test with JavaScript disabled unless the page genuinely needs it.
Work through the failure in order
1. Check the test browser at snapshot time
Before diagnosing Percy’s remote result, look at the page in the same browser session immediately before percySnapshot. If the page or target UI is already missing there, fix the application state, navigation, or test flow first. If it is visible in the test browser but absent in Percy, investigate what Percy captured, which assets it found, and how the snapshot rendered.

2. Wait for the page’s meaningful ready state
A snapshot taken immediately after navigation can preserve a loading screen or incomplete page. Wait for the actual element or application state your test needs, rather than assuming navigation alone means the page is ready. For script-based CLI snapshots, BrowserStack documents waiting for a selector or using a timeout; Cypress snapshots should follow meaningful states such as completed navigation, interaction, or asynchronous loading.
Use a selector wait where possible because it ties the snapshot to the expected UI. A fixed delay can help diagnose timing, but it may be too short on a slow CI run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.

3. Check the remote JavaScript setting
If your Percy configuration enables JavaScript and the result is blank or times out, try disabling it. JavaScript is off by default during remote rendering. Enable it only when required, and account for the possibility that scripts will execute again against a DOM that was already formed in the test browser.

If the structure appears but images, fonts, or styling are absent, inspect the Percy build’s Network logs and asset-discovery output. Look for failed or slow requests, private asset hosts that are not allowed or reachable, CI timeouts, and assets that require authentication. For lazy-loaded content, scroll far enough to trigger loading before capture. For responsive images, check Percy’s documented captureSrcset option.

5. Distinguish a blank snapshot from no uploaded snapshots
A snapshot that Percy received but rendered incorrectly is not the same as a build with no snapshots. If the build contains none, confirm the test actually ran the Percy SDK or CLI snapshot command and that the CI worker has the correct PERCY_TOKEN. For parallel runs, make sure the build was finalized after all shards completed.
6. Use Percy diagnostics before changing configuration
Start with the build’s smart-debug Overview to find the classified failure and relevant log line. Open Network logs to identify missing assets or slow third-party requests. To investigate local capture and asset discovery without creating a build or uploading snapshots, run npx percy exec --debug -- [test command]. Use --verbose for detailed logs while uploading snapshots. These modes help isolate whether the fault is in capture, discovery, upload, or rendering.

7. Check intermittent and viewport-specific failures
Compare whether the issue occurs across runs, browsers, and widths. If snapshots are missing intermittently, the official guide suggests reducing concurrency to 1 as a diagnostic. For responsive DOM issues, Percy documents deferred upload to load DOMs on the specific device; inspect the affected browser’s network and rendering details before treating a single-width failure as a global capture issue.
