Install urlwatch, add an individual job for each official notice or information page you want to follow, enable a notification reporter, then schedule urlwatch to run repeatedly. Use ordinary URL retrieval for pages whose useful text arrives in the initial HTTP response; use a browser-based navigate job if the page needs JavaScript to display it. Filter each job to the relevant announcement or table so unrelated page changes do not trigger noise.
urlwatch checks for changes when it runs; it is not a continuous monitor and does not provide live train-running status. For near-real-time running enquiries, use the official National Train Enquiry System (NTES) route identified by Indian Railways, not a page-change alert.

What urlwatch can—and cannot—alert you about
urlwatch retrieves a page, compares its current output with the previous run, and can notify you when the monitored output changes. As its handbook puts it, “urlwatch is intended to help you watch changes in webpages and get notified (via e-mail, in your terminal or through various third party services) of any changes.” The alert is about a change to the page you chose, not necessarily a new official announcement: a redesign, rotating banner, or unrelated text change can also count unless you filter it out.

- Good fit: notices, recruitment listings, tenders, circulars, timetable announcements, and zonal railway update pages.
- Not a live-status substitute: urlwatch only checks when scheduled, so it cannot guarantee immediate notice of a change or tell you where a train is now.
- Keep errors separate from changes: a timeout or unavailable site is an error, not proof that the page content changed.
Set up urlwatch and choose a notification route
- Install it for your operating system and Python environment. Follow the current installation instructions in the urlwatch handbook; there is no single verified install command that applies to every platform and environment.
- Run
urlwatchonce. The handbook’s quick start uses this initial run to create the configuration files. Useurlwatch --editto edit jobs and filters, andurlwatch --edit-configto edit settings and reporters. - Configure and enable a reporter. The documentation lists SMTP email and third-party reporters including Telegram, Slack, Discord, Matrix, Pushbullet, and Pushover. Pick a channel you can check and configure its required account details or credentials. urlwatch’s support for a reporter does not establish that the external service is free, available in your country, or guaranteed to deliver every message.
- Make one named job per page. Separate jobs let you see which source changed and tune its retrieval and filtering without affecting the others. Use a stable official listing or announcement page rather than a transient search result where possible.
- Schedule recurring runs. Use cron or another scheduler on a computer or server that will remain available. The handbook recommends not checking more often than every 30 minutes. Choose an interval appropriate to the page’s practical urgency and be considerate of the site; alerts cannot arrive between runs.
- Review the initial output and subsequent reports. The first run establishes the comparison state. Inspect a reported diff to confirm that it reflects the content you care about; also review error reports rather than treating them as alerts about a confirmed change.
Choose the right job type for each page
Use a URL job for server-returned content
Choose the ordinary url job when the page’s relevant content is present in the HTTP response. It is generally the simpler route because it does not need to open a browser and wait for scripts. A page that looks complete in a normal browser may still load its announcement list later with JavaScript, so check what urlwatch actually retrieves before relying on this job type.
Use a browser job for JavaScript-rendered content
Choose navigate when the information appears only after a browser executes page scripts. Browser rendering can make a job slower and more resource-intensive than a basic request. Confirm that the rendered result contains the intended list or notice and that the job is not capturing irrelevant dynamic material.

Use a command job only when retrieval needs a command
The command job type is available for cases where you genuinely need a command-line retrieval step. Do not add a command layer just because a page is difficult to monitor; first determine whether a URL job, a browser job, or a content filter addresses the issue.
Reduce false alerts with filters
Filter the part of the page that carries the actual information—such as a notice list, results table, or article body—rather than comparing the entire page. The handbook supports CSS and XPath selection as well as text cleanup and matching. A sensible progression is:

- Run the job without a narrow filter and inspect the retrieved output.
- Select the smallest stable page element that still contains the notices or fields you need, using a CSS or XPath filter.
- Use text cleanup or matching only if the selected content still includes irrelevant variation.
- Run it again and inspect both the filtered result and any diff before depending on alerts.
Filters depend on the page’s structure. If an agency redesigns its site or changes the markup, a selector can stop matching or begin selecting the wrong content. Recheck jobs after unexplained empty results, sudden bursts of changes, or known site redesigns.
Select official railway and transport pages carefully
For notices and published updates
Start with the relevant official agency, railway zone, or department page for recruitment, tenders, circulars, timetable releases, or public announcements. Choose the specific listing or notice page that matters, then verify that its content is accessible to the job type you selected. Site addresses and page structures vary and can change, so verify the live page and its rendering behavior before setting a job to run unattended.

For train-running information
Indian Railways points passengers to NTES for train enquiries. A Ministry of Railways description identifies NTES as the backend for near-real-time running information, and a March 2025 CAMTECH handbook describes NTES website and mobile-app access for running status, arrivals and departures, and schedules. Use the official NTES enquiry interface for a train’s status; urlwatch is for detecting changes to published pages, not for tracking a train in motion.
For timetable information
Do not rely on a timetable link merely because it remains on a passenger enquiry page. The Ministry of Railways announced on 3 October 2023 that the then-new “Trains at a Glance” timetable was effective from 1 October 2023. The passenger enquiry page also carries a legacy “Trains at a Glance 2019-20” link. Neither is a basis for claiming that a timetable is current today: verify the official timetable page and its stated effective date when you choose what to monitor.

Schedule checks without overloading a site
urlwatch runs only when invoked, so a scheduler determines how often it checks and how quickly you might notice an update. The handbook’s recommendation is not to check more often than every 30 minutes. For routine circulars or tender listings, a less frequent schedule may be sufficient; choose based on the actual urgency, the site’s terms and practical access, and how often you can act on an alert. Keep the machine or service running, and confirm the scheduled process is completing successfully. A stopped computer, expired credentials, network failure, or broken scheduler can interrupt checks even when the job definition remains unchanged.

- No alerts arrive: run urlwatch manually and inspect its output. Confirm that the job is enabled, its URL is reachable from that machine, the reporter is configured and enabled, and the scheduled task is actually running.
- The page appears empty: the useful content may be rendered by JavaScript. Try a
navigatejob and inspect its retrieved output; also check whether a filter selector still matches the current page. - Too many changes are reported: narrow the job to the notice or table of interest, then use cleanup or matching filters for remaining irrelevant variation. Review the diff rather than assuming each change represents an announcement.
- A filter suddenly stops working: inspect the page’s current structure and the job’s selected output. A site redesign or changed markup can make a previously useful CSS or XPath selector stale.
- The report says the page errored: check connectivity, site availability, and any access or credential requirements. Treat an error as a failed check, not as a confirmed content update.
- The alert arrives later than expected: compare its time with the scheduler interval and the last successful run. urlwatch cannot observe changes between scheduled executions, and delivery also depends on the configured reporter and external service.

No. Use the official NTES enquiry interface for running information; urlwatch reports changes to monitored web pages.
Can I get alerts through Telegram or Slack?
The urlwatch handbook lists both as reporter options. You must configure and enable the chosen reporter, and delivery depends on that external service.
Will urlwatch alert me immediately when a page changes?
No. It checks when its scheduled process runs, so the checking interval and successful execution determine when a change can be detected.
