Percy is BrowserStack’s visual testing and review platform: it captures pages or app states, compares them with approved visual baselines, and sends differences to a team for review. It fits best when a team can add stable capture points to existing tests and has the capacity to investigate and approve changes. Its main trade-offs are screenshot-based usage, possible rendering differences from developers’ machines, and the ongoing work needed to keep captures repeatable.
What Percy does
Percy targets visual regression: unintended changes in appearance after code changes, such as altered layout, styling, fonts, or colors. The basic cycle is to integrate Percy with a test or capture workflow, run it to create snapshots, then review differences against approved baselines. A reviewer decides whether a difference is an intended design change or a regression; the visual diff is evidence for that decision, not an automatic verdict. Percy’s overview describes the workflow and the role of baseline review.

How to set up Percy with Cypress
The following is the documented Cypress route, not a report of hands-on testing. Package names and integration behavior can change, so consult the current Percy documentation when implementing it.
- Create a Percy project. In Percy, create a project for the application and retrieve its project token. Keep the token private.
- Install the CLI and Cypress integration. Add the Percy CLI and Cypress package as development dependencies using the commands in the current Percy Cypress guide. The retrieved documentation establishes these package roles, but does not provide a verified version-pinned command; use the current guide rather than copying an unverified install command.
- Load the integration. Import Percy’s Cypress integration in the Cypress support setup so the
cy.percySnapshot()command is available. - Add snapshots at meaningful states. Put
cy.percySnapshot()calls after navigation and after the page reaches the state you want to review. Prefer stable, representative pages or components instead of capturing every transient state. - Set the project token in the environment. Store it as
PERCY_TOKENin your local environment or CI secret store. Do not commit the secret to source control. - Run the test command through Percy CLI. Follow the current Cypress guide’s command syntax to wrap your existing Cypress run with Percy. Inspect the resulting build in Percy’s dashboard, review the diffs, and approve intentional changes or fix regressions.
The first visual build establishes or uses a baseline; later builds compare captures with approved imagery. A new or changed baseline should reflect a deliberate design decision, not an attempt to clear a noisy diff without investigation. See the Cypress setup documentation for the current commands and configuration.
Playwright teams
Percy documents a Playwright integration using @percy/cli and @percy/playwright, with a percySnapshot call. Its repository also documents a drop-in route for existing Playwright toHaveScreenshot() assertions. In that override route, the visual verdict is handled in Percy’s review interface and the assertion passes locally; the repository also records compatibility and configuration caveats, including a Playwright Test version requirement. Confirm the current package instructions and compatibility notes before adopting it: Percy Playwright repository.
Where Percy is useful—and what it does not establish
Baseline-centered team review
Percy’s review model compares new captures with approved baselines and presents visual differences for inspection. Reviewers can approve individual snapshots, groups of snapshots, or whole builds. Repository integration can associate builds with pull request and commit information, helping teams locate the change that produced a difference. Percy overview

Automation instead of a separate manual capture routine
With framework SDKs and CI/CD integration, teams can place captures in tests they already run. That makes visual review part of a development workflow rather than a separate process of manually taking and comparing screenshots. The benefit depends on whether the chosen framework and CI service are supported and whether the app can be captured consistently. Integration information
Documented browser coverage
Percy-managed new projects enable Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari by default, according to its cross-browser guide. That is useful for comparing a set of managed browser renderings, but it does not mean the captures exactly match every developer’s operating system, browser version, fonts, or local configuration. Cross-browser documentation
Visual scope, not a complete test strategy
Percy checks appearance and supports review of visual changes. Keep functional behavior, accessibility, and broader quality checks in their own testing practices; the documented visual workflow does not establish that Percy replaces them.
Limitations and operational cautions
Repeatability determines signal quality
Animations, fonts, network activity, changing test data, and unstable application state can make screenshots vary between runs even when the intended design has not changed. Percy’s Cypress guidance recommends waiting for animations, fonts, and network activity to settle, controlling test data and state, and prioritizing important pages or components. Without those controls, reviewers may spend time investigating noisy diffs. Cypress guidance

Managed rendering may not match a local machine
When browsers are managed through Percy, its infrastructure controls the rendering environment. Percy documents Chrome, Firefox, and Edge running on Linux in that mode; text can render differently from Windows or macOS because of operating-system and font differences. If OS-level fidelity matters, its documentation points to BrowserStack Automate configuration for specifying operating-system and browser combinations. Cross-browser documentation
More browser and viewport coverage means more captures
Each browser and responsive-width combination adds a rendered screenshot to usage, even when the interface groups several screenshots into a snapshot. That makes broad coverage useful but not free of operational or cost consequences. Estimate volume from the matrix you actually intend to run before choosing a plan.
Build failures still need engineering attention
Percy lists incomplete asset uploads, missing screenshots, and rendering timeouts among causes of failed builds. CI integration therefore needs monitoring and maintenance; a visual diff is not a guaranteed automatic pass/fail oracle. Percy overview

- Creating calmer and happier mornings and bedtimes for the whole family by showing your child what they need to do to get ready.
- Encourages independence and therefore boosts self esteem as children are no longer dependent on you reminding them what comes next.
- Allows for processing time - the pictures, or pecs cards for autism, don't disappear like words do and therefore these are great for children with special educational needs, autism, ADHD, speech and language delay, ASD.
- Eliminates the need for you to nag - children can see what they need to do for themselves in this routine chart.
- Pictures cards can be moved around thanks to being attached using VELCRO Brand hook and loop, meaning you can order the routine to suit your family.
BrowserStack’s example shows how coverage multiplies: two pages tested across two browsers and three widths total 12 screenshots, even if the interface groups the captures into two snapshots. A screenshot is a rendered page or component for one browser and responsive-width combination. Billing and usage explanation
Percy’s overview says free-plan builds expire after 30 days and other plans include one year of build history. Confirm the current retention terms on the product pages before relying on them for audit or debugging needs. Percy overview
Estimate your monthly volume
- Count the pages or components that receive snapshots in a typical run.
- Multiply by the number of browser and responsive-width combinations for each capture.
- Multiply by the number of runs you expect in a month, including pull-request and main-branch runs.
- Compare that estimate with the current plan allowance and account for possible overages.
This estimate is more useful than counting test cases alone: a single test can generate multiple browser-and-width screenshots.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen Percy is a good fit
- Your team already runs automated tests and can add snapshot calls at deterministic application states.
- Visual changes need explicit review and approval in the same general flow as code changes.
- You can control data, fonts, animations, and loading behavior enough to keep repeated captures comparable.
- You have estimated screenshot volume across pages, browsers, widths, and monthly runs—not just the number of snapshot calls.
Compare visual-testing options on framework fit, browser and OS control, screenshot volume and overages, build-history retention, and how approvals connect to code review. Percy’s documentation supports evaluating those criteria; it does not establish comparative performance or time savings against other products.

If your immediate need is a clean image of a URL rather than baseline review integrated into a test suite, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: its API returns screenshots or PDFs, removes known cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.
Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The request captures a URL directly; it does not replace Percy’s baseline comparison, test integrations, or team approval workflow. ScreenshotNeo’s response identifies whether a capture was clean and whether it was billed; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
