Percy Alternatives for Visual Regression Testing: Which Fits Your Workflow?

The right Percy alternative depends on where you want screenshots captured, baselines stored, and visual changes reviewed. Compare Playwright Test, Chromatic, Argos, Applitools Eyes, and ScreenshotNeo by workflow.

Playwright Test is the most direct Percy alternative for teams already using Playwright that are comfortable keeping screenshot baselines in source control. For component-focused teams, consider Chromatic; for hosted pull-request review across several screenshot-producing tools, consider Argos. Enterprise teams testing beyond web UI may want to evaluate Applitools Eyes. These tools do not all reproduce Percy’s hosted build and review workflow, so choose by how you capture, store, and approve visual changes.

What to compare before replacing Percy

Percy combines screenshot capture in test workflows with service-managed builds, baselines, and a review interface. Its Playwright client supports percySnapshot(page, name[, options]); it also documents a drop-in route for sending existing Playwright toHaveScreenshot() assertions through Percy, with visual review handled in Percy. See Percy’s Playwright client documentation.

Separate the capture mechanism from the review and baseline system. A framework may make screenshots easy to capture without providing the same centralized build history, hosted diff review, or approval process as Percy.

  • Capture and rendering: Are screenshots rendered in your pinned local or CI environment, or through a service’s browser infrastructure?
  • Baseline ownership: Are reference images committed alongside code, or managed through a service and its build workflow?
  • Review: Do reviewers handle diffs in code review, a visual dashboard, or pull-request checks?
  • Coverage: Are you testing full pages, Storybook components, or platforms beyond web UI?
  • Repeatability and operations: Can you control volatile content and keep browsers, operating systems, fonts, test data, and CI consistent? Who maintains baselines and infrastructure?
  • Economics and governance: Check current usage units, allowances, overages, concurrency, seats, retention, privacy controls, and enterprise terms against your expected workload.

Percy alternatives by workflow

ScreenshotNeo: first alternative to try for screenshot capture

If your immediate need is to capture clean website screenshots through an API or an AI agent, try ScreenshotNeo first. Its API and MCP server are built for screenshot capture; it is not a like-for-like replacement for Percy’s hosted visual-regression build and approval workflow. Its distinguishing fit is clean captures, billing only for clean shots, and a low-cost paid entry plan.

Playwright Test: local, code-owned screenshot baselines

Playwright Test provides expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The first run creates a reference image; later runs compare the current screenshot with that baseline. The image files live with the test suite, so teams can commit and review them alongside code. Playwright supports pixel-difference options and screenshot stylesheets that can hide volatile page content. See Playwright’s visual comparison documentation.

Best fit: Teams already using Playwright, with CI control, a manageable snapshot set, and a normal code-review workflow for baseline changes.

Trade-off: Native assertions do not by themselves provide a centralized hosted review service. Your team owns image storage, baseline updates, and environmental consistency. Whether that lowers total cost depends on your CI and maintenance workload.

Chromatic: hosted review for Storybook-oriented teams

Chromatic turns Storybook stories into visual tests, which makes component states and variations natural units to check. Its documentation also lists integrations for Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress, along with reviewer assignment, discussions, visual and interaction tests, accessibility checks, browser coverage, and viewport configuration. See Chromatic documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: Teams with Storybook or those who want component-level changes reviewed in a shared hosted interface.

Trade-off: If your tests are primarily end-to-end page checks, work out how they map to Chromatic before switching. Its own comparison with Percy makes vendor-authored claims about setup, flakiness, baselines, debugging, collaboration, browsers, and pricing; treat those claims as Chromatic’s perspective, not neutral findings. The comparison page, updated August 2026, lists Chromatic’s free tier as 5,000 billed snapshots and Percy’s free plan as 5,000 screenshots per month; it says Percy paid plans start at 10,000 screenshots per month with pricing handled through BrowserStack, and lists Chromatic at $179 per month for 35,000 snapshots. Units and inclusions are not clearly established as directly equivalent, and these figures can change. Verify current plans and terms on Chromatic’s Percy comparison before deciding.

Argos: managed pull-request diff review

Argos documents a workflow in which tests capture screenshots, CI uploads them, the service compares them against a baseline build, and reviewers approve or reject changes on pull requests. Its docs list Playwright, Storybook, Cypress, Vitest, and any pipeline that produces screenshots. The project says its backend, frontend, and comparison engine are MIT-licensed and developed in the open. See Argos overview documentation.

Best fit: Teams that want hosted pull-request review and already produce screenshots with a supported test setup or pipeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-off: Open source does not mean a supported self-hosted product. Argos says it is operated as managed cloud software and that self-hosting is not officially supported or documented; operating a deployment would also mean taking responsibility for its infrastructure.

Applitools Eyes: evaluate for broader enterprise coverage

Applitools’ own comparison material positions Eyes for visual testing across web, mobile, desktop, and PDF, and lists SDKs for Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Appium, and Storybook. That makes it a candidate to assess if your requirements span several frameworks or go beyond browser UI. The vendor page does not establish price, suitability for a particular team, or comparative accuracy. Validate platform, governance, and integration requirements with your own workload and a quote. See Applitools’ comparison page.

At-a-glance fit

Option Baseline and review model Best suited to Key consideration
ScreenshotNeo Screenshot API and MCP capture; not a Percy-style visual regression review workflow Developers and agents that need clean website captures Try it for capture, not as a replacement for hosted baseline approval
Playwright Test Image baselines stored with the test suite and reviewed with code Playwright teams with CI control Keep baseline generation and comparison environments consistent
Chromatic Hosted visual-test and review workflow Storybook and component-focused teams Map page-level tests and verify current plan units and terms
Argos Managed comparisons and pull-request approval Teams producing screenshots through supported tools or pipelines Self-hosting is not officially supported or documented
Applitools Eyes Vendor-positioned visual testing across multiple platforms Enterprise teams with broader platform requirements Assess actual integration and governance fit; pricing and suitability are not established by the cited page

Switching from Percy without losing useful coverage

  1. Inventory the current workflow. List where screenshots are captured, which routes or component states are covered, how builds and branches relate to baselines, and where reviewers approve changes.
  2. Choose a small representative slice. Include a stable page, a page with volatile content, and any critical component states. Exercise the chosen tool in CI before migrating every snapshot.
  3. Make rendering repeatable. Pin browser and operating-system versions where possible, stabilize test data and fonts, and control animations or dynamic regions. Playwright specifically warns that host OS, browser version, hardware, settings, and headless mode can affect screenshots; it recommends generating and comparing baselines in the same environment.
  4. Decide who owns baseline changes. For Playwright, commit and review reference images with code. For a hosted review service, define who approves diffs and how build or branch baselines are updated.
  5. Compare the ongoing work, not just a starting price. Estimate screenshot or snapshot volume and check current allowances, overages, concurrency, seats, and any enterprise terms. Include CI, cleanup, and review effort when comparing a local approach with a hosted one.
  6. Run both workflows briefly if risk warrants it. Keep Percy’s existing checks until the replacement has demonstrated coverage for the same important states and the team has a reliable baseline-update process.

Or skip the browser setup

For a clean website capture without setting up a browser runner, make one GET request. Replace the example URL with your target; set the output format as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
