A 2010 study reported that self-assembled peptide nanospheres could reach a Young’s modulus of 275 GPa—higher than the approximately 200 GPa value for steel cited in a contemporaneous comparison. That is a striking stiffness result, not proof the spheres are stronger, tougher, or more useful than steel in a finished product.
What the researchers made and measured
Adler-Abramovich and colleagues studied nanoscale spheres self-assembled from N-tert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc)-protected diphenylalanine, an aromatic dipeptide. The spheres ranged from 30 nm to 2 μm in diameter, according to Chemistry World’s 2010 report. The researchers could not determine the dimensions of the spheres’ internal cavities.

In the peer-reviewed paper, “Self-Assembled Organic Nanostructures with Metallic-Like Stiffness,” the team used atomic force microscopy (AFM) with a diamond-tip cantilever to test the nanospheres. The paper, first published online on 28 September 2010, reported a Young’s modulus of up to 275 GPa. The publisher describes the structures as potential building blocks for ultrarigid composite biomaterials. (Angewandte Chemie International Edition; the Ben-Gurion University record identifies the work as peer-reviewed.)

What “stiffer than steel” means
Young’s modulus describes how resistant a material is to elastic deformation: broadly, how much it deforms under an applied load before permanent changes occur. It is not a measure of how much force a material can withstand before breaking. A high modulus therefore does not, by itself, establish greater tensile strength, hardness, toughness, or durability.

The “stiffer than steel” comparison also needs a geometry qualification. Chemistry World reported that the 275 GPa value applies to a simulated case: a 1 μm particle with a 0.4 μm dipeptide shell. It compared that modeled value with 130 GPa for Kevlar and approximately 200 GPa for steel. The team used simulation to estimate the modulus because the basic measured stiffness varied with material thickness. These are comparisons of Young’s modulus, not a universal ranking of the materials or a claim that every sphere has that value.
Why the result is not a ready-made material
The study suggested that peptide nanospheres might eventually help reinforce composite materials, with medical implants mentioned as one possible direction. Those were prospective applications, not demonstrated products. In the contemporaneous report, coauthor Itay Rousso said, “There is a large gap between discovery and usage.”

The mechanism was still uncertain
The researchers had not confirmed why the structures showed such high mechanical properties. They proposed that molecular planarity and interactions between the π-electrons of aromatic side chains might contribute, but this remained an open question. The report also quoted University of Utah protein-assembly researcher Kenneth Woycechowsky raising a possible limitation: assembly structure may depend on pH, which could constrain applications.
What the measurements do not establish
- That bulk peptide material is stronger or tougher than steel.
- That the reported modulus applies to every particle size, shell thickness, or geometry.
- That the spheres can be manufactured reliably at useful scale or incorporated into a working composite or implant.
- That an implant made from or reinforced by these structures would be safe, durable, or effective.
Rousso told Chemistry World, “When we applied force to measure these particles, diamond probes were the only thing that actually made an indentation,” describing the measurement work. Woycechowsky’s assessment in the same report was: “Regardless, Gazit, Rousso, and coworkers have made an amazing discovery.” These comments convey the interest in the result, not evidence of practical readiness.
