Check the lens generation and the exact camera model to determine autofocus, aperture control, metering and image coverage. For older M42 screw-mount lenses, Pentax documents an adapter path with setup limits.
What is the Pentax K mount?
The K mount is Pentax’s bayonet-style interface for interchangeable lenses. Ricoh Imaging says, “Every lens mount designed for PENTAX interchangeable lenses since 1975 has been based on the bayonet-type K mount.” The design has accommodated newer diaphragm-control and autofocus mechanisms over time, so long-term mount continuity does not mean every lens retains every function on every body. Ricoh Imaging’s K-mount guide provides the background.

Think of compatibility as several separate questions: Does the lens attach directly, can you focus manually or automatically, how is the aperture controlled, what metering and exposure behavior is available, and does the lens cover the camera’s sensor? A yes to physical fit does not answer the rest.

Labels such as K, KA, KAF, KAF2, KAF3 and KAF4 are clues to the lens-body interface and supported functions, not a guarantee that every feature works across all combinations. The body’s own specifications and support information are the final check.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Manual Focus】 No electronic contacts. Don't support auto focus or aperture control. With the manual adapter, aperture of your lens will be defaulted the maximum.
- 【Lens Mount】 Compatible with Pentax K screw mount lens.
- 【Camera Mount】 Designed for L mount cameras, include Leica SL SL2 T TL TL2 CL cameras; Panasonic Lumix S1 S1R S1H cameras; Sigma FP cameras, etc.
- 【First Use】 Enable the setting of your camera as "release shutter without lens" when first use with a manual adapter, otherwise the camera will not recognize your lens and cannot take pictures.
- 【Pre-purchase Verification】 Please ensure your lens mount and camera mount before purchase in case of unnecessary returning. We are here for help if you have any question about adapters.
Manual K and KA lenses
Older K-mount lenses are generally manual-focus designs. Depending on the specific lens and body, aperture may be set with a ring on the lens rather than electronically from the camera. Check the camera manual for aperture-ring settings, metering behavior and available exposure modes.
Autofocus KAF generations
KAF-family lenses add autofocus-related interfaces, but autofocus operation depends on the lens’s drive system and the body’s support for it. Do not infer autofocus compatibility from the K mount alone; confirm the exact lens and body pairing.

KAF4 and electronic diaphragm control
KAF4 lenses use an electrically controlled diaphragm rather than a mechanical aperture lever. Ricoh Imaging’s K-70 FAQ says the K-70 supports KAF4, and that some earlier camera bodies may need firmware updates for support. Check the body’s current firmware notes and compatibility information before relying on electronic aperture control.

Can M42 screw-mount lenses be used on a Pentax K-70 or K-1?
Yes, Pentax documents using M42 S (screw)-mount lenses on both models with the PENTAX Mount Adapter K. This is an adapted manual-lens setup, not a way to add autofocus or full electronic communication.
On the K-70
The K-70 FAQ says the focus indicator will not operate unless “Using Aperture Ring” is enabled. Consult the camera instructions for the setting’s location and the recommended exposure procedure.

On the K-1
The K-1 FAQ specifies enabling “Using Aperture Ring” and selecting MF (manual focus) when using screw-mount lenses with the Mount Adapter K.
These are model-specific instructions. Before buying an adapter or lens, check the FAQ and manual for your exact camera, and verify the lens’s condition and mount.

What about Pentax 645 and 67 lenses?
Pentax’s K-70 and K-1 FAQs also describe adapter paths for 645 and 67 lenses. They are conditional, not blanket compatibility promises. For example, the K-70 FAQ says certain 645 lenses without an aperture ring cannot be used and gives additional menu and focus-mode conditions. Confirm the exact lens and camera combination in the relevant body FAQ and lens documentation before purchasing an adapter.
How can you check whether a specific lens will work?
- Identify the exact camera body. Use its model-specific specifications, FAQ and manual rather than assuming one Pentax body behaves like another.
- Identify the lens mount and generation. Check the lens documentation or markings to distinguish a native K-family lens from an M42, 645 or 67 lens that requires an adapter.
- Check how the aperture is controlled. Determine whether the lens uses a mechanical lever, an aperture ring or electronic diaphragm control. Confirm the body supports that method and whether a setting or firmware update is required.
- Confirm focus and metering behavior. Look for the supported autofocus drive, manual-focus mode, focus-indicator conditions and exposure restrictions for that pairing.
- Check image coverage and stabilization setup. APS-C lenses may not cover a full-frame sensor; a larger-format lens can cover a smaller sensor but may still require manual operation. For adapted lenses, consult the camera manual about entering focal length for stabilization when applicable.
- Verify before buying. Match the exact lens and adapter to the camera’s official compatibility information; a shared mount name alone is not enough.
How large is the Pentax lens ecosystem?
In a February 2017 note, Ricoh Imaging reported more than 380 compatible lens types. That historical count covered genuine PENTAX lenses, counted products with minor changes separately and excluded third-party lenses; it is not a current inventory of lenses available to buy. The breadth reflects the mount’s long history, while the generation and body checks above determine what a specific combination can do.
