“Pending download” does not identify a specific updater or its cause. If it appears in Windows Settings under Windows Update, first check available storage, run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, restart the PC, and check again. If it appears in an app store or another updater, Windows-specific steps may not apply.
First, identify which updater is showing the message
The wording alone does not confirm that this is a Windows error. “Pending download” can appear in different update contexts, and the steps depend on the device and app. Check whether the message is in Windows Settings > Windows Update, a phone app store, or another updater.

Before troubleshooting, note the device, operating-system version, update name, exact status, and any error code. If the message is not in Windows Update, use the support guidance for that specific device or updater rather than following Windows steps.

Check available storage
Microsoft says a Windows PC running low on storage may have trouble installing updates. Open Windows Storage settings and review Cleanup recommendations before removing anything; check that personal files you want to keep are backed up. See Microsoft’s guide to freeing up drive space in Windows.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, Microsoft’s current route is Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Labels can vary by Windows build. Follow any on-screen instructions, then restart the PC and check Windows Update again. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter guidance describes the built-in tool.
Use external storage only for a specific space warning
Microsoft says external storage can help complete a feature update when Windows explicitly reports that more space is needed. That guidance does not make an external drive a general fix for a pending download: it will not diagnose a network, account, policy, or update-service problem. Check the update’s stated space requirements before buying storage.

If the status remains pending
Collect the Windows version, update name or KB number if shown, exact status, any error code, available storage, and whether the PC is managed by work or school. Give those details to Microsoft support or your organization’s device administrator so they can advise on the specific case.
A pending status by itself does not establish that a cache reset, command-line repair, or other manual system change is appropriate. Avoid advanced repairs until the platform and any accompanying error have been confirmed.
