PEGI and ESRB both help families judge a game’s age suitability and content, but their labels are not interchangeable. Their age categories use different scales, and matching descriptor words do not guarantee matching criteria or outcomes. For a specific game, check the rating shown in the market where it is sold, read its content information, and separately review online features, spending and parental controls.
How PEGI and ESRB ratings differ
PEGI uses minimum-age labels of 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18. ESRB uses Everyone, Everyone 10+, Teen, Mature 17+ and Adults Only 18+. ESRB’s Rating Pending mark is not a final age category: in the described marketing context, it signals that a physical game expected to receive an ESRB rating has not yet been assigned one.

Both systems communicate age suitability, but the categories are not a conversion chart. A PEGI number and an ESRB category that seem close in age do not necessarily reflect the same content thresholds. Use the rating assigned for the game’s market and the definitions from that specific system. PEGI’s label explanations and the ESRB ratings guide describe their respective approaches.
| System | Age categories | What the categories indicate |
|---|---|---|
| PEGI | 3, 7, 12, 16, 18 | Minimum-age guidance interpreted alongside PEGI’s content descriptors. |
| ESRB | Everyone, Everyone 10+, Teen, Mature 17+, Adults Only 18+ | Age suitability interpreted alongside ESRB content descriptors and, where available, a rating summary. |
What the age categories mean
PEGI’s age labels
PEGI’s categories reflect differing content contexts, not a judgment about a child’s ability to play. PEGI 3 is described as suitable for all ages. PEGI 7 may include potentially frightening material or very mild violence. PEGI 12 can include more graphic fantasy or non-realistic violence and mild sexual innuendo. PEGI 16 covers violence or sexual activity approaching real-life depiction and may include stronger language or substance use. PEGI 18 covers adult-level material such as gross violence, glamorized illegal drugs, simulated gambling or explicit sexual activity. See PEGI’s category and descriptor explanations for the meaning of a particular label.

ESRB’s age categories
The ESRB guide describes Everyone as generally suitable for all ages, Everyone 10+ for ages 10 and up, Teen for ages 13 and up, Mature for ages 17 and up, and Adults Only for ages 18 and up. These are the ESRB’s own categories; apparent similarities to PEGI ages should not be treated as exact equivalents. The guide’s category definitions explain the ESRB labels.
How to read content descriptors
The age mark is a first screen, not a full content inventory. PEGI descriptors identify content elements and interactive risks, with examples including violence, bad language, fear or horror, gambling, sex, drugs and discrimination. Their meaning can depend on the age category: PEGI distinguishes gambling themes, which may appear at PEGI 12, from simulated casino-style gambling, associated with PEGI 18.
Rank #2
ESRB content descriptors identify content that may have contributed to a rating or may matter to consumers. Examples include violence, blood, blood and gore, fantasy violence, intense violence, language, strong language, gambling themes, real gambling, simulated gambling, sexual content, sexual violence, suggestive themes, and substance references or use. ESRB says these descriptors are not intended to list every content element.

Some descriptor terms appear in both systems, but the same word does not establish the same threshold or rating result. Read each term in the context of the system that issued the label; ESRB’s guide and PEGI’s explanations provide those system-specific meanings.

Online features and spending need a separate check
Labels about online or purchasing features do not work identically in the two systems. ESRB lists certain Interactive Elements—such as in-game purchases, interactions with other users, location sharing and unrestricted internet access—separately from content descriptors. ESRB says these features do not influence the rating assignment. PEGI uses interactive-risk descriptors and says certain features can affect the age rating under rules it describes as effective since June 2026.
ESRB Interactive Elements
Look for ESRB Interactive Elements in addition to the age category and content descriptors. They can flag features such as in-game purchases, including random items, user interaction, location sharing and unrestricted internet access. They identify features that may be of interest or concern; they are not additional age ratings. The ESRB guide explains the distinction.
PEGI’s interactive-risk information
PEGI’s current explanations include in-game purchases and additional text descriptors concerning paid random items, time-limited offers, cryptocurrency-related features, pressure to play and unrestricted communication. PEGI describes rating consequences for certain purchase and communication features as effective since June 2026: paid random items submitted since that date are described as PEGI 16, or PEGI 18 for social casino games; time-limited offers can result in PEGI 12, with a stated parental-control condition allowing PEGI 7; and unrestricted communication without blocking or muting and moderation is rated PEGI 18. These are recent, specific rules, not a general conversion between PEGI and ESRB. Consult PEGI’s current official explanations when checking an individual game.
Ratings vary by market and format
PEGI says its system is used and recognized throughout Europe. ESRB ratings appear on physical games as well as digital games and apps, including VR and online games. ESRB is a founding rating authority of IARC, which administers a streamlined rating process for digital games and mobile apps. A game’s displayed rating can therefore depend on the market and format; use the label and full information shown where you plan to obtain it. Age suitability is not the same as difficulty
A rating addresses age suitability based on content, not how hard a game is to play. PEGI explicitly notes that an age-appropriate game may still be difficult for a younger child, while an easy game can carry an adult rating because of its content. Consider a child’s experience and needs separately from the age mark. PEGI’s FAQ explains this distinction.
How to check a game before a child plays
- Identify the market’s rating. Check the package or storefront where the game is sold and note whether it shows PEGI or ESRB.
- Use the age category as an initial filter. Treat it as guidance about age suitability, not as a difficulty measure or a direct equivalent to the other system’s label.
- Read every content descriptor. For ESRB-rated games, check whether a detailed rating summary is available; ESRB provides summaries for many physical games. For PEGI, use the descriptor explanations to understand the icons and terms.
- Inspect online and purchase features. Check communication, user-generated content, in-game spending and purchase mechanics independently of the age category.
- Set parental controls to your family’s needs. Use the console, device or platform controls to manage access and interactions; a rating label does not configure those controls for you.
What the labels can—and cannot—tell you
The systems offer a useful first screen: an age category plus information about content, and, depending on the system, interactive features. They do not make a universal PEGI-to-ESRB conversion, guarantee that descriptors provide a complete scene-by-scene inventory, or replace a family’s decisions about online interaction and spending. ESRB reported that 83% of U.S. parents with children who play video games were aware of ESRB ratings and 77% regularly checked them before buying, citing Hart Research Associates in 2025; that is an ESRB-reported U.S. statistic, not a comparison with PEGI or evidence about families elsewhere. ESRB’s 2025 report provides the figures.
