Peer-to-peer (P2P) networking can reduce the need to run a separate game server, while dedicated servers give a separate machine authority over the match. Neither is automatically faster or cheaper overall: the right choice depends on the game’s fairness needs, player count, network routes, and tolerance for host dependence.
How the two multiplayer architectures work
Peer-to-peer and listen servers
In a P2P design, players exchange game messages directly rather than routing all communication through a separate game server. In many games, “P2P” describes a player-hosted match: one player’s machine runs the session while that person also plays. This is commonly called a listen server. The host is therefore both a participant and the machine other players depend on.

P2P does not necessarily mean a game has no backend services. Matchmaking, peer discovery, connection setup, or relay services may still be involved. Direct connections can also run into firewall and network address translation (NAT) restrictions.

A dedicated server runs on a separate machine and is not one of the participating players’ game clients. Players communicate through that server, which can hold the authoritative game state. Microsoft’s game-networking overview describes server-based multiplayer as placing most game operations on a central game server; Epic’s Unreal Engine networking overview explains the dedicated server’s authoritative role.

How the trade-offs compare
| Factor | Player-hosted P2P / listen server | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure and operating cost | Can avoid running a separate authoritative server, reducing server costs for the game operator. Matchmaking or relays may still require infrastructure. | Requires separate server machines, network capacity, configuration, and ongoing operations. Epic says dedicated servers are “more expensive and challenging to configure.” |
| Latency and advantage | The host may have a latency advantage because the host is local to the session simulation. Other players’ routes to the host can vary. | All clients connect remotely to the server. Results depend on server location and each player’s route; a server is not automatically closer or faster for everyone. |
| Authority and fairness | The host’s machine runs the session, creating a different trust model from an independent authoritative server. | A separate authoritative game state can support more consistent, trusted, and fair operation. |
| When a player disconnects | If the host leaves or becomes unavailable, the session may end unless the game implements host migration. | The session does not rely on a participating player’s client as its host. |
| IP privacy and connectivity | Direct connections may expose players’ public IP addresses and can be affected by NAT or firewall restrictions. | Players connect to the server rather than directly to one another. Relay services can also mask IP addresses in supported implementations. |
| Typical fit | Can suit smaller social or cooperative sessions when the team accepts host advantage and host-departure risk. | Often a better fit for large sessions or competitive games where authoritative control, reliability, and fairness matter. |
These are tendencies, not guarantees. Epic identifies MMOs, MOBAs, and fast-paced shooters as examples where dedicated servers may be preferable; those examples are guidance, not player-count thresholds.
Which architecture is likely to fit your game?
Consider a listen server when
- The intended sessions are small and primarily social or cooperative.
- Avoiding a separate server fleet is important to the operating budget.
- The game can tolerate one participant having a host advantage and the session depending on that participant’s connection and availability.
Consider dedicated servers when
- Competitive integrity, consistent authority, or trusted match outcomes are central.
- The game expects large sessions or needs a high-performance server environment.
- The team can budget for server resources, configuration, and ongoing operations.
These recommendations follow from the documented cost and host-dependence trade-offs; they are not universal rules. A game can also use different arrangements for different modes or stages of play.

Latency: compare routes, not labels
There is no topology-wide latency winner. In a listen-server match, a player’s connection to the host matters; with dedicated servers, each player’s route to the server matters. Geography, network conditions, server placement, and routing all affect the result.

Relays can change the path rather than simply making it shorter. Valve notes that Steam Datagram Relay may improve ping for some players but can be slower for others, particularly when a dedicated server is far from relay data centers. Measure performance for the regions and routes your players actually use instead of promising that P2P or dedicated hosting will always be faster.

Host departure and session continuity
A player-hosted match depends on its host remaining available. Microsoft documents host migration as a way for a P2P session to elect a new host when the original host is unavailable. Migration is extra behavior the game must implement, and it does not guarantee seamless continuity; the game still needs to handle the transition and any lost or inconsistent session state.
In the Microsoft protocol documentation, host migration applies to P2P sessions and not to client/server sessions. A dedicated server is not a player’s game client, so the match is not tied to one participant staying connected.

IP privacy and connection handling
Direct P2P connections can reveal players’ public IP addresses to one another, as Steam Support explains in its Steam Datagram Relay FAQ. Valve says Steam Datagram Relay can route traffic without revealing IP addresses, and that its traffic is authenticated, encrypted, and rate-limited. Those are capabilities of that specific service, not a blanket guarantee about every relay or game implementation.

When switched to Performance Mode in the BIOS (press "Esc" key repeatedly during boot, save then exit), this mini PC delivers superior multi-core processing power, significantly outperforming Intel N-series chips in CPU-intensive applications, multitasking, and creative workloads.
What to evaluate before choosing
- Set the game’s trust requirements. Decide how important an independent authoritative game state, consistent rules, and competitive fairness are.
- Define the expected session size and regions. Player count alone does not dictate architecture; where players and servers are located also shapes performance.
- Account for operations, not just launch cost. A listen server can avoid a separate authoritative server, but matchmaking, peer discovery, connection setup, relays, and support still have costs. Dedicated servers add server and configuration work.
- Plan for disconnections. Decide what happens when a host leaves, and whether host migration is worth designing and maintaining.
- Test real network paths. Check latency, connection success, and IP privacy behavior in target regions, including any relay routes.
