Choose PDFShift when your main task is converting HTML or a webpage into a PDF; choose Browserless when screenshots or PDFs are one step in a broader browser-automation workflow. Neither is an established speed, quality, reliability, or price winner from the available evidence. For a focused screenshot API alternative, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes common consent banners and popups before capture, and bills only clean shots.
How PDFShift and Browserless differ
PDFShift is primarily an HTML-to-PDF conversion service. Its documented use cases also include screenshots and Open Graph images. Browserless offers screenshot and PDF endpoints within a broader browser platform that includes rendered-content extraction, scraping, downloads, custom browser functions, sessions, and other automation capabilities. The distinction is about product scope, not a proven difference in output quality. PDFShift FAQ · Browserless REST API guide
| Decision point | PDFShift | Browserless |
|---|---|---|
| Primary fit | HTML and webpage conversion to PDF, with screenshots and Open Graph images also listed. | Screenshot and PDF requests plus a wider browser-automation and scraping platform. |
| Request model | Submit a URL or HTML for conversion. | REST endpoints handle a single action; sessions, functions, or WebSocket options are available for broader workflows. |
| State between actions | Not established in the cited materials for a multi-step browser workflow. | REST calls are stateless; cookies and state are discarded after the response. |
| Published cost basis | Credits are based on generated output size, with free-tier limits. | No comparable pricing figures are established here; check current plans and terms. |

PDFShift is a fit when conversion is the job
PDFShift’s FAQ describes converting HTML documents and webpages, including pages built with frameworks or libraries such as React, Vue, ChartJS, and D3.js. It also lists screenshots and Open Graph image generation. The FAQ says raw HTML can be submitted without making the page public. Those claims make it worth evaluating for document or image rendering, but do not establish a head-to-head rendering advantage. PDFShift FAQ
Browserless is a fit when rendering belongs to automation
Browserless is more relevant when a capture is one step among browser actions such as scraping, downloads, audits, or work that needs a session. Its REST endpoints are intended for one action per request: the service launches a browser, performs the task, and closes the session. Use its session or function options when a workflow must preserve state or perform multiple steps. Browserless REST API guide · Browserless API overview
What the screenshot and PDF controls mean
Screenshots
Browserless documents viewport and full-page screenshots, as well as selector-based capture, clipping, output type, quality, and transparent backgrounds. Its capture guidance describes waiting for images and fonts so they have time to load. A full-page capture and a viewport capture are different outputs: confirm which your downstream use needs, especially if page length or lazy-loaded content changes what is visible. PDFs
Browserless’s REST /pdf endpoint uses Chrome’s print pipeline. Its documented controls include page format, orientation, margins, print backgrounds, page ranges, headers and footers; print stylesheets can therefore affect the result. The PDF contains selectable text rather than being merely a screenshot. However, the REST endpoint does not make one continuous page spanning the entire webpage; Browserless points to its function API for that customized output. Tagged output is not certified PDF/UA, and accessibility still depends on the source markup. Browserless PDF API · Browserless capture guide
Whichever service you evaluate, output depends on the source HTML and CSS, print styles, loaded fonts and images, viewport, and render settings. A successful API response alone does not prove that a particular page will look right.

PDFShift: output-size credits and free-tier ceilings
PDFShift’s pricing page currently advertises up to 50 free credits per month, one credit per 5 MB of generated data, a 15 MB maximum file size on the free tier, and a 30-second free-tier timeout. Because credit use depends on output size, a document is not necessarily one credit: its FAQ gives a 14 MB PDF as an example that uses three credits. PDFShift pricing · PDFShift FAQ
The FAQ describes a Boost plan at $24 per month for 2,500 credits and $0.03 for each overage credit. Treat that as a vendor-published example, not a guaranteed current quote; check the live pricing calculator and terms before budgeting. PDFShift FAQ

Browserless: compare a real workload against current terms
The material cited here does not establish a comparable Browserless price, so it cannot support a price-winner verdict. Compare current plan terms using the same request volume, page and output sizes, concurrency, and any session or proxy capabilities your workflow needs. Do not compare a PDFShift credit allowance directly with a Browserless plan without converting both to that workload.
What has—and has not—been established about performance
There is no substantiated head-to-head speed, visual-quality, or reliability comparison here. PDFShift’s homepage publishes company claims of 86+ million conversions, 56,000+ developers, a 1.5-second average conversion time, and 99.99% uptime; the page gives no year or methodology for those figures. Its FAQ separately states 99.9% customer-experienced uptime, also without a year, which differs from the homepage figure. These are vendor statements, not independently verified results. To make a decision for your own pages, run the same representative URLs through each candidate with equivalent viewport, waits, print settings, and output requirements. Check content completeness, text selection, layout, and output size; measure elapsed time under your expected concurrency. This is a proposed evaluation method, not a reported test result.

Privacy and data handling
PDFShift’s FAQ says it does not store requests or generated documents. It also notes that using its filename option stores output in Amazon S3, and that customers can instead send documents to their own S3 storage. This is PDFShift’s own description, not an independent audit finding; review the current terms and the exact storage path you plan to use. PDFShift FAQ

ScreenshotNeo: an alternative to try first for screenshot APIs
If the task is specifically taking website screenshots through an API, ScreenshotNeo is a focused alternative: it accepts a URL in one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP; replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo’s free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Browserless make a PDF of an entire webpage as one continuous page?

Does Browserless PDF output contain selectable text?
Yes. Browserless says its REST PDF output uses Chrome’s print engine and contains real, selectable text, rather than being a screenshot.
Are PDFShift’s published uptime figures consistent?
No. Its homepage states 99.99% uptime and its FAQ states 99.9% customer-experienced uptime; neither page supplies a year or methodology for the figures.
