If a YouTube Live stream appears to show old frames when FFmpeg loops a video, first check whether the frames are already stale in FFmpeg’s local output or become stale only after YouTube receives the stream. Then verify that -stream_loop -1 is before the file’s -i option, that file input is paced with -re, and that YouTube reports healthy ingest. Those checks narrow down where to investigate; the symptom alone does not establish a particular cause.
First locate where the frames become old
“Old frames” can describe different symptoms: a frozen picture, playback that is behind the source, or a picture that stops advancing at the loop boundary. The title of the problem does not identify which one is happening—or whether the fault is in the file loop, FFmpeg’s output, the connection, or YouTube’s received stream.

- Check FFmpeg’s outgoing video locally, if you can. If it is already frozen or behind before YouTube playback, investigate the input, loop, timestamps, or encoder path. If it looks current locally but not on YouTube, look at ingest health and the stream configuration. This comparison helps locate the stage; it does not by itself prove the cause.
- Note the timing. Does the picture become stale immediately, only near the end of the file, or after several loops? Record whether audio continues and whether the symptom appears in a local output as well as YouTube playback.
- Keep the evidence together. Save the exact command, FFmpeg version, source format and timestamps, relevant FFmpeg log lines, and YouTube stream-health messages. Redact the stream key before sharing any command or logs.
Check the loop and input pacing options
Put the loop option before the input it should repeat
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option. For an indefinitely repeated file, place -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i. An option placed after the input may not apply to that input as intended. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Pace file input for live output
For a file being sent as a live stream, check that -re appears before the file input. FFmpeg describes it as reading input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), rather than consuming the file as quickly as possible. Do not blindly apply a low read rate to an actual capture device or already-live input: FFmpeg cautions that doing so can cause packet loss.

Do not assume the loop option fixes every loop-boundary issue
Correct option placement is necessary to request the intended loop, but it is not proof that a particular file will loop cleanly. Some inputs cannot seek back to the start; stream-copy looping also depends on suitable keyframe and timestamp conditions. If the symptom appears at the boundary, inspect the file and timestamps and test the output rather than treating the command alone as a diagnosis. The secondary FFmpeg Cookbook looping guide discusses these stream-copy assumptions.
Use a diagnostic command skeleton carefully
This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested universal fix. Replace the ingest placeholder with the primary RTMPS ingest address supplied for your YouTube stream and its assigned stream name. Adjust codec, bitrate, frame rate, GOP, and audio settings for the source, target output, and system capacity.

Compare the output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of a healthy stream; the suitable settings depend on the actual output and a connection that can reliably sustain the upload. Guidance can change, so consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page.

For status details, YouTube recommends a representative preflight test and monitoring stream health while live. Check Live Control Room messages or the relevant API status and health fields rather than inferring ingest health from playback alone. See Google’s LiveStreams API documentation. YouTube’s guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Troubleshoot by symptom, without guessing at the cause
| What you observe | Checks to make next |
|---|---|
| Frames are stale in FFmpeg’s local output too | Recheck the input, option order, loop behavior, timestamps, and relevant FFmpeg logs. Preserve the source details and exact command for diagnosis. |
| Local output advances, but YouTube playback looks stale | Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and the ingest status. Compare the actual codec, frame rate, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval with current YouTube guidance. |
| The symptom appears at or near the loop boundary | Inspect whether the input can seek back to its start and whether the file’s timestamps and keyframes support the looping method. Do not assume a timestamp or keyframe problem without evidence. |
| The stream becomes unhealthy under the selected settings | Check whether the upload can sustain the configured bitrate. Lower the selected quality, run a representative test, and monitor stream health again. |
| The available information does not isolate a stage | Collect the exact FFmpeg version and command, source format and timestamps, relevant logs, local-output observation, and YouTube health messages. Keep the stream key redacted. |
