A PDFShift URL conversion can time out because PDFShift reached its conversion limit, your HTTP client or an intermediary stopped waiting first, or the page spent too long loading and rendering. Start by checking whether you received PDFShift’s HTTP 408 JSON response or a local timeout/abort error: those point to different fixes.
First identify which timeout happened
PDFShift documents a default total conversion timeout of 30 seconds for free accounts and 100 seconds for paid accounts. The limit covers loading, processing, and PDF generation. When a conversion takes too long, PDFShift says it returns JSON with HTTP status 408. These are vendor-stated defaults reviewed on October 3, 2026; plan limits can change. PDFShift FAQ

| What you see | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP 408 and a JSON response | PDFShift conversion limit | Inspect page loading, processing, readiness waits, and the account’s conversion limit. |
| Client timeout or abort, with no PDFShift response | Your HTTP client or an intermediary | Check client, proxy, and load-balancer deadlines. Your request may have been cut off before PDFShift responded. |
| A PDF arrives, but a chart, font, or other dynamic content is missing | Page readiness | Wait for a signal that the required content has actually rendered. |
| Images are missing, especially below the fold | Lazy loading or failed resources | Trigger lazy loading intentionally and make the readiness condition tolerate failed images. |
The last two symptoms are troubleshooting clues, not proof that a particular resource caused a timeout. PDFShift’s reviewed guidance does not provide a server-side trace format that identifies the stalled request for an individual conversion.
Why URL conversions run out of time
Remote resources take time to fetch
When PDFShift converts a URL, it must retrieve the page and its external resources. Images, stylesheets, scripts, and fonts add network requests and dependencies. PDFShift identifies fetching the URL and its resources as a main cause of longer conversions. Its help guidance recommends reducing network requests. PDFShift: How to improve the converting time?

JavaScript content may render after the page loads
A page can finish loading its resources before a chart or other asynchronous component is ready. Conversely, waiting for a condition that never becomes true consumes the remaining conversion budget. PDFShift supports wait_for for checking a page condition; make that condition specific to content the PDF needs and ensure it can complete within the overall limit. PDFShift: wait_for guide
Lazy-loaded images may never enter the page state you expect
PDFShift does not usually scroll through a page to trigger lazy-loaded images. A check that waits for every image to finish can also wait indefinitely if even one image fails. Trigger loading deliberately, then ensure the check accounts for image errors instead of treating every failed image as an endless wait. PDFShift: lazy-loading guide

The caller may stop waiting before PDFShift does
Your HTTP client has its own timeout, separate from PDFShift’s conversion timeout. If the client’s deadline is shorter, it can abort while the service is still working. PDFShift’s Got guide illustrates a 10-second client timeout; that example is not a recommended universal setting. PDFShift Got guide

- Save the exact outcome. Record the HTTP status and response body, or the full client exception/abort. A PDFShift 408 response and a local timeout are not interchangeable.
- Compare deadlines. Check the client’s configured timeout and any proxy or load-balancer deadline against the account’s PDFShift conversion limit. Allow enough time for the service to return its result, while keeping a sensible bound for your application.
- Check the URL and dependencies. Confirm the source is reachable from the conversion environment and inspect redirects and remote images, CSS, scripts, and fonts. Without logs or a reproducible test, do not assume which dependency stalled.
- Reduce network work. If your application has the page content, send raw HTML rather than asking PDFShift to fetch the URL. Inline critical CSS or JavaScript where practical, remove scripts that do not affect the PDF, optimize images, and embed image data when appropriate. These are vendor recommendations, not guaranteed fixes for every page. PDFShift conversion-time guidance
- Wait for what the PDF actually needs. If required content is generated asynchronously, use
wait_forto test a specific readiness signal. Avoid a condition that can remain false forever. - Handle lazy images and errors. Trigger image loading as needed and make completion logic distinguish loaded images from failed ones. A strict “all images loaded” test can preserve the timeout symptom when an image request fails.
- Escalate only after measuring. If a conversion still needs more time after reducing work, paid customers can ask PDFShift about an adjustment. The reviewed FAQ states defaults but does not publish a universal configurable paid timeout maximum.
Check concurrency separately for batch jobs
PDFShift’s FAQ states a default maximum of 50 parallel conversions. Compare your workload’s peak simultaneous requests with that figure, and contact PDFShift if you need a custom allowance. Concurrency is a separate diagnostic: the FAQ does not say that parallelism alone causes an individual conversion to return 408. PDFShift FAQ

If what you need is a clean screenshot of a page rather than a PDF conversion, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For PDFShift URL-to-PDF debugging, continue with the checks above; this is an alternative when a screenshot fits the job.
Example cURL call (replace the target URL with your page); see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options:
