To stream a 9:16 portrait video in a 16:9 YouTube Live player without distorting it, scale the portrait image to fit inside a landscape canvas, then fill the unused side areas with black, designed panels, or a blurred copy of the video. In FFmpeg, use scale and pad for the simplest layout, or a filter graph with overlay for a background-and-foreground composition.
Choose how to use the landscape space
A 16:9 output canvas is wider than portrait footage. There are three basic ways to compose it; choose based on whether preserving the whole image or filling the screen matters more.

FFmpeg’s filter documentation describes the scale, pad, crop and overlay operations used for these compositions. The blurred-background approach is a composition choice, not a YouTube requirement.

Fit the portrait video and add black side areas
For a 1920×1080 landscape output, scale the source down so it fits within those dimensions while preserving its aspect ratio, then pad the result to the full canvas:

The centered offsets place the video in the middle. setsar=1 sets the output sample aspect ratio to square pixels.
Use a blurred copy as the background
To fill the side areas with a soft enlarged version of the video, split the input into background and foreground branches. Crop the enlarged background to landscape dimensions, blur it, fit the foreground inside the same canvas, then overlay it in the center:

[bg][fg]overlay=(W-w)/2:(H-h)/2,setsar=1[outv]Here the foreground is limited to 608×1080, an example portrait region on a 1920×1080 canvas. Adjust it to suit the source and design. The background branch enlarges until the landscape canvas is covered, then crops to its dimensions; the foreground branch preserves the full portrait image. The filter graph is illustrative, not a tested, universal command: FFmpeg build, filter availability, source dimensions and accepted options can vary.
Connect the filter graph to your live command
Use the filter graph as part of your FFmpeg command, map its output video label, and map audio from the input if it has an audio stream. A schematic command structure is:

For the blurred version, substitute its full filter graph for the simple filter graph. Do not expose your stream key; treat it like a password. Enter your own YouTube server URL and stream key in the command or encoder configuration you use, and keep the key private.
Set YouTube-compatible live encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. These are platform options and guidance, not a guarantee that your computer or internet connection can sustain a particular stream.

Pick resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate as a set, then make sure your reliable upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate with room for normal network variation. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks; that does not remove the need for a stable incoming feed.
Start the stream and check it before going public
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the live stream and retrieve the server URL and stream key. Keep the key secret.
- Configure FFmpeg. Add the chosen scale-and-pad or overlay filter graph, map the output video label, map input audio if present, and set your encoder, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval and ingest destination.
- Run a representative test. Check that the video has the intended framing and that motion, audio and synchronization are correct. YouTube recommends testing before the live broadcast; see its recommended upload encoding settings.
- Monitor stream health. Watch Live Control Room for ingest or quality warnings while the encoder is running. If the stream is unstable, reduce the selected quality or bitrate to a level your connection can reliably carry.
One landscape output is not a separate vertical stream
This workflow sends one landscape composition. YouTube also documents workflows for horizontal and vertical live streams together. Its Live Control Room vertical layout choices include center crop, fit to phone width and stacked. For third-party dual streaming, YouTube’s live-stream setup directions describe RTMP(S), a separate vertical stream key and sending the correct content format to each key. A single FFmpeg landscape output does not create that additional, separately composed vertical feed.
Troubleshoot common layout and ingest problems
- Portrait footage looks wide. The filter graph may be stretching the source. Use
force_original_aspect_ratio=decreaseto fit it and pad the remaining canvas instead. - The subject is cut off. A fill-the-frame scale-and-crop layout removes part of the source. Switch to fit-and-pad, or adjust the crop only if losing that portion is acceptable.
- There are black bars instead of a blurred background. That is the expected result of the simple
padlayout. Use the split, background scale/crop/blur and overlay graph if you want the side areas filled with a blurred copy. - FFmpeg rejects a filter or option. Filter availability and accepted options depend on the installed build. Check the local FFmpeg filter documentation and adapt the graph to the build rather than assuming every installation supports the same options.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops. Check the ingest details and connection, then lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate to a combination your upload can sustain. Confirm settings and stream health in Live Control Room.
- The stream has no audio. Verify that the input contains audio and that the command maps it. The illustrative filter graph processes video only; it does not create or route an audio stream.
