PDFCrowd is a hosted HTML-to-PDF API; wkhtmltopdf is a command-line converter you install and operate. Choose PDFCrowd if a managed HTTP service and its documented PDF controls suit your workflow. Choose wkhtmltopdf if you need to run the converter yourself and its LGPLv3 license and rendering behavior fit your environment. Neither tool is established as a universal winner for speed or fidelity: test representative documents before committing.
How the two tools differ
| Decision | PDFCrowd | wkhtmltopdf |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Hosted API accessed over HTTP or an official client library. | Open-source command-line tool that you install or build and run. |
| Input | URL, HTML text, or uploaded HTML file; local assets can be packaged with the HTML in a supported archive. | URLs and documents, with command-line options for resources, cookies, headers, and local files. |
| JavaScript | Product documentation lists custom JavaScript and readiness controls. | JavaScript is enabled by default; the manual documents a 200 ms default delay and options to disable JavaScript or set a delay. |
| Layout controls | Page size, orientation, margins, page breaks, headers, footers, page numbers, print CSS, and custom CSS. | Page and margin settings, print media selection, headers, footers, page numbering, and other command-line options. |
| Additional PDF requirements | Documentation lists watermarks, password protection, PDF/A, and tagged PDF output. | The reviewed manual does not establish feature parity for those requirements. |
| Who operates it? | PDFCrowd operates the renderer; your application controls its HTML, data, and business rules. | Your team operates the converter and surrounding runtime. |
| License and capacity | Requires account credentials; request rate and concurrency depend on the license. | The project identifies the tool as LGPLv3 open source. |
For current service constraints, confirm details in PDFCrowd’s API documentation and its HTTP guide. For the converter’s license and options, consult the wkhtmltopdf project and command-line manual.
When PDFCrowd is the better fit
PDFCrowd makes sense when you want to submit conversion requests to a managed endpoint instead of deploying and maintaining a renderer. It accepts a URL, HTML input, or uploaded file; its HTTP documentation describes sending local assets alongside HTML in a supported archive. Its documented controls may also suit projects that need options such as PDF/A, tagged output, or password protection.
A URL conversion requires the target page and its resources to be reachable from PDFCrowd’s servers. If the page is private or depends on local assets, check the supported input and asset-upload path before designing the integration. The HTTP guide documents a maximum upload size of 300 MB; rate and concurrency depend on the license, so verify the current limits for your account and expected volume.

Using a hosted service also means sending conversion requests to a third party under its current terms. Assess that arrangement against your data-handling requirements before sending sensitive content.
When wkhtmltopdf is the better fit
wkhtmltopdf fits teams that want to run an LGPLv3 command-line converter within their own environment and are prepared to manage installation, upgrades, monitoring, and conversion failures. The project describes it as a headless tool using Qt WebKit; its manual documents options for JavaScript, HTTP cookies and headers, print media, links, forms, page settings, and local-file access.

Those options do not guarantee that a particular modern site, CSS framework, or JavaScript-heavy page will render as intended. Test your actual templates, fonts, assets, and output requirements with the version and runtime you plan to deploy. Review the license in the context of your distribution and deployment model.
JavaScript and rendering fidelity
Both products document JavaScript-related controls, but the existence of those controls does not establish equal compatibility or output fidelity. PDFCrowd lists custom JavaScript and readiness controls. wkhtmltopdf’s manual says JavaScript is enabled by default and documents a 200 ms default delay, which can be changed or disabled.

A fixed delay may be insufficient for a page that loads data asynchronously, while waiting longer can add conversion time. For either tool, check the final PDF for content that appears after initial page load, missing images or fonts, layout shifts, and pages that depend on scripts or external resources. Use the product’s readiness or delay controls where applicable, then inspect the generated document rather than assuming a setting guarantees a correct render.
Compare output and operating effort before choosing
- Gather representative documents. Include a typical page and the hardest cases: long content, complex page breaks, unusual fonts or image dependencies, JavaScript-driven content, and required headers or footers.
- Exercise the actual input path. For PDFCrowd, test whether the service can reach the URL or whether you need to submit HTML and package assets. For wkhtmltopdf, test the URL or document with the local files and access settings your deployment will use.
- Check layout at the required paper size. Verify page dimensions, orientation, margins, print styles, page breaks, headers, footers, and page numbering in the resulting PDF.
- Verify specialized output requirements. If you need PDF/A, tagging, password protection, or watermarks, confirm the exact requirement with the relevant product documentation and a real output test; do not infer feature parity.
- Include operations in the decision. Account for deployment, upgrades, monitoring, failed conversions, service terms, license constraints, request rate, concurrency, and your actual conversion volume.
This is a due-diligence process, not a claim that either converter has been tested here. No universal performance, security, price, or fidelity ranking is established by the cited product documentation. Estimate total cost using your volume and infrastructure, and confirm current service terms and plan limits directly.

If you need a website screenshot or a PDF of a public page rather than a general-purpose HTML-to-PDF workflow, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; the request below asks for a PDF.
cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -d format=pdf -o page.pdf
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can wkhtmltopdf convert a local HTML file?
Its manual documents local-file access options, but the result depends on how the document references its assets and on the runtime’s access configuration.
Does a JavaScript delay guarantee that dynamic content will appear in the PDF?
No. A delay or readiness setting is a control, not proof that every asynchronous page has finished rendering. Verify the output for your page.
