If a Chrome Headless screenshot ends at the bottom of the browser window, your script is probably capturing the viewport rather than the full scrollable page. In Playwright, set fullPage: true. With the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), set captureBeyondViewport: true and omit clip. Then check that the page has finished rendering and that any scroll-triggered content has loaded.
Use a full-page capture instead of a viewport screenshot
A viewport screenshot records only the area visible inside the browser window. A full-page screenshot asks the capture API to include the page beyond that viewport. Increasing Chrome’s window size changes the viewport; it does not, by itself, request a full-document capture.

Playwright: set fullPage: true
For a typical page, navigate to it and enable Playwright’s full-page option:
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page. networkidle is only an example readiness condition: it may not suit sites with persistent network activity or content that appears later. Choose a condition that matches the page, then verify that the content and page height are ready before capture. See the Playwright screenshot documentation.

Chrome DevTools Protocol: capture beyond the viewport
When calling CDP directly, request a screenshot beyond the viewport and do not provide a clip:
{
"method": "Page.captureScreenshot",
"params": {
"format": "png",
"captureBeyondViewport": true
}
}
In Chromium’s implementation, the full-page path measures the page dimensions and uses them when captureBeyondViewport is true and no clip is supplied. If you provide a clip, you are specifying a region rather than relying on that full-page behavior. Consult the CDP Page.captureScreenshot reference and the Chromium implementation; implementation details can change.

Chrome command line: understand what the flags do
The command-line screenshot flag is useful when you want a viewport capture with a chosen window size and wait. For example:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,900 --timeout=10000 https://example.com/
This sets a 1440 × 900 window and a maximum wait of 10,000 milliseconds. Chrome documents --timeout as the maximum wait before capture, not as a guarantee that loading or asynchronous rendering has completed. The command-line reference does not describe --screenshot as a full-page capture switch, so use Playwright’s or CDP’s full-page control when you need the entire scrollable document. See Chrome Headless command-line options.

Why the bottom can still be missing
The page was not ready when the screenshot was taken
A timeout is a ceiling, not a readiness test. Chrome may take the screenshot when the maximum wait expires even if the page is still loading. For pages that render asynchronously, wait for a meaningful signal such as a required element or completed application state; then inspect the page before capture. Chrome’s --virtual-time-budget can advance virtual time for time-dependent scripts, but it does not replace checking that the content you need is present.
Content loads only when the page is scrolled
Some pages add images or other content as the visitor scrolls. Do not assume that requesting a full-page image will trigger every site’s lazy loading or infinite-scroll logic. If the missing area appears only after scrolling, reproduce the page’s required scroll-and-load cycle in the browser, wait for new content to settle, and then take the full-page screenshot. The exact cycle depends on the site.

The page is unusually tall or keeps changing size
Current Chromium source rejects a full-page screenshot if either measured dimension is at least 128 × 1024 pixels. The same implementation notes that the page size can change between measurement and capture. This is an implementation limit, not a general promise that pages below that size will always capture successfully. For an extremely long page or one whose layout keeps changing, wait for dimensions to stabilize or capture stable sections instead.

Check the result before treating it as fixed
- Compare the image dimensions with the viewport. If the screenshot height is just the configured viewport height, the capture is likely viewport-only.
- Confirm the full-page option is reaching the capture call. Use Playwright’s
fullPage: true, or CDP’scaptureBeyondViewport: truewithoutclip. - Check the page content and dimensions before capture. Make sure delayed content has appeared and the page is no longer changing size.
- Test scroll-dependent sections. If the site reveals content on scroll, trigger the needed scroll/load behavior before capturing.
- Try stable sections if the page exceeds the implementation limit or changes during capture. Capture sections individually rather than relying on one extremely tall image.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API can return a screenshot or PDF; cookie banners and consent notices, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and those cleanup steps can be turned off. It reports whether a page was a bot check, blank, timed out, failed to load, or served from cache; those outcomes are not billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. Full-page capture with lazy images loaded is one of its options.
For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and the example URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
