Then match the remedy to how you send the page: a URL, a local file, or an HTML string. Relative paths, private assets, and a separate header or footer template each need different fixes; changing timing settings will not solve an inaccessible stylesheet.
1. Start with PDFCrowd’s debug log
Rerun the conversion with debug logging enabled before changing CSS or layout settings. PDFCrowd’s FAQ advises: “Enable debug logging with setDebugLog() to troubleshoot the cause.” The PHP guide says the log can include resource-loading details, timeouts, and browser console messages.

Look for the exact stylesheet URL and whether its request failed, timed out, or triggered a browser-console issue. In the PHP client, getDebugLogUrl() retrieves the log URL; conversion history may also contain logs. A local or connection failure can occur before a conversion log is available. The same relative asset path can work in a browser yet fail when the converter receives a standalone file or string. Check the final rendered stylesheet URL, not just the source template.

URL conversion
Confirm PDFCrowd’s servers can reach both the page and its CSS. A URL that opens in your logged-in browser may depend on your session, a private network, or a local machine that PDFCrowd cannot access. Django’s PDFCrowd guide notes that URL conversion makes a separate GET request and does not inherit the visitor’s Django session. A localhost URL points to the machine making the request, not your development computer.
For protected content, configure the required authentication or cookies where appropriate, or send rendered HTML instead. Check PDFCrowd’s Django guide for its URL-conversion details.
HTML string or local file conversion
For convertString... or convertFile... calls, relative external stylesheet, image, and script paths may have no usable base URL. Use a publicly reachable absolute URL, or add a correctly placed <base> element before the relative references. For local assets, package the HTML and its assets in a ZIP while preserving their directory structure, then use the file-conversion workflow that accepts the archive.

3. Test access to the failed stylesheet
Copy the failed URL from the log and open it independently, preferably without relying on an authenticated browser session. If the URL itself cannot be opened, fix its availability before adjusting the PDF conversion. Review:
- Whether the stylesheet is public or requires authentication.
- CDN rules, hotlink protection, referrer checks, firewalls, Cloudflare rules, or security plugins that may block the converter.
- Whether the URL points to a localhost, intranet, or otherwise private resource.
- Whether the returned resource is actually CSS rather than an access-denied page or other response.
PDFCrowd’s WordPress guidance recommends checking whether the URL can be opened directly and whether security controls block access.

4. Consider timing only when resources are reachable
If the stylesheet loads successfully but the relevant content appears only after page load or scrolling, investigate timing and visitor state rather than access. Prefer a reliable wait-for-element marker when one is available; use a JavaScript delay only when the page needs extra time and no better marker fits.
- For lazy-loaded images or sections, increase the content viewport height so they have an opportunity to load.
- If the page depends on form input, applied filters, or report generation, use the WordPress plugin’s Content conversion mode to capture visitor-generated content.
- Do not disable JavaScript as a general fix: doing so can prevent the missing content from loading.

5. Check header, footer, and print styles separately
If the main page is styled but its header or footer is not, inspect that region’s template. PDFCrowd renders header and footer templates separately from the main content, so include the required CSS in each template and ensure its external assets are reachable. The behavior is documented in the PHP API guide.

If the page relies on print-specific CSS, the PHP API guide also documents enabling print media. Alternatively, apply custom CSS for the conversion. These options address which styles are applied; they do not make an inaccessible stylesheet URL available.

Once the log points to a likely cause, change the corresponding input—asset URL or base path, access rules, timing, or template CSS—and rerun the conversion. Compare the result and the log before trying another change. This makes it easier to tell whether the underlying failure was a missing resource or content that was not ready when captured.
