For a documented one-request workflow that accepts a PDF URL and returns clean text plus retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) chunks, doc.page’s POST /api/v1/extract endpoint is the closest direct fit. Its synchronous API can return Markdown, structured elements, and chunks with page, section, token-estimate, and source-element information. This is a vendor-documented capability, not an independent accuracy or performance test.
The one-call option: doc.page Extract API
The documented request sends a PDF URL and asks for the outputs you need: Markdown for readable text, elements for document structure, and chunks for downstream retrieval. The service describes the response as synchronous, so the documented flow does not require you to create a separate extraction job and poll for completion.

POST https://doc.page/api/v1/extract
Content-Type: application/json
{
"url": "https://example.com/document.pdf",
"outputs": ["markdown", "elements", "chunks"]
}
Use the actual PDF URL in place of the example. The endpoint, request shape, and supported output names are documented on doc.page’s API and MCP documentation.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy chunk metadata is useful
Chunks are more useful for an auditable RAG pipeline when they retain links to their origin. doc.page documents chunk fields for page, section, token estimate, and source element IDs. Those can help your application preserve context when storing or retrieving chunks and make it easier to trace a result to document content. The documentation does not establish that those fields guarantee better retrieval quality.

Engine choice and stated limits
The API page describes a default “fast” engine focused on prose and a heavier “hybrid” mode intended to reconstruct tables and provide bounding boxes. If hybrid is temporarily unavailable, the service says it falls back to fast and returns an explicit warning. Check the response rather than assuming the requested mode ran.
The same page says scanned PDFs without a text layer are not supported yet. It also notes limitations with borderless academic tables and dense tables with merged cells. If your documents depend on these features, test them before committing to the workflow or consider a service that explicitly supports scanned-document extraction.

How Adobe PDF Extract differs
Adobe PDF Extract is a managed alternative when structured extraction and Markdown are priorities. Adobe documents extraction of text, tables, and figures, with reading order and structure represented in its outputs. Its overview says Markdown preserves document structure and reading order, represents tables as Markdown, and can embed figures as base64; JSON provides detailed structural information. Adobe says the API works with native and scanned PDFs.
The integration is not the same one-call shape. Adobe’s documented REST setup requires credentials and a token, creating and uploading an asset, submitting an extraction job, polling for its status or using notification, and downloading the output. See Adobe’s PDF Extract overview and getting-started guide.

Adobe’s February 26, 2026 announcement said direct PDF-to-Markdown support was available and described direct chunking as forthcoming at that time. That announcement does not establish whether chunking has since been released; the available documentation here is not enough to claim that Adobe currently returns RAG chunks directly. See the dated Adobe announcement for that historical status.

Choose and validate against your PDFs
- Choose doc.page when you want the documented URL-in, synchronous request shape and direct chunks, and your PDFs have a usable text layer.
- Evaluate Adobe when scanned-document support, structured JSON, or extraction of tables and figures matters more than a one-request integration.
- Test your difficult documents, not just clean prose. Include scans, multi-column layouts, borderless tables, merged cells, and page references that matter to your application.
- Check provenance in the output. Verify that returned chunk metadata is sufficient for your application to point users or debugging tools back to the relevant page and source content.
For current doc.page limits and plan details, its API page lists a 25 MB maximum PDF, a free-key allowance of 500 pages per month, and Premium at $4.99 per month. These are vendor-published details accessed October 4, 2026, and may change; confirm them on the live API page before relying on them. Adobe’s overview lists 500 free Document Transactions per month; confirm the current plan terms on Adobe’s overview. Quotas are plan allowances, not evidence of extraction performance.
