If your car has Bluetooth, pair your phone in the vehicle’s Bluetooth or phone settings, then select Bluetooth as the audio source to play music. If it doesn’t, you can add Bluetooth through a compatible AUX receiver, an FM transmitter, a vehicle-specific factory-radio adapter, or a replacement stereo. The right choice depends on your car’s audio system and the features you want to keep.
How to pair a phone with built-in car Bluetooth
Pair while parked. Menu names differ by vehicle, stereo, and software version, so use your owner’s manual for the exact sequence. Chevrolet’s Bluetooth pairing guide and Nissan’s NissanConnect device instructions illustrate the general process.

- Turn on Bluetooth in your phone’s Settings.
- On the car’s display or audio unit, open Bluetooth or Phone settings and choose an option such as Add device, Pair device, or Pair New Device.
- When the vehicle appears in the phone’s list of available devices, select it. Confirm the pairing code or prompts on both screens if requested.
- Choose Bluetooth as the car’s audio source, then test a call or play music while parked. Pairing for hands-free calls does not necessarily mean the stereo supports music streaming.
Some cars separate phone pairing from audio-source selection. For example, Ford’s instructions for specified systems show Bluetooth Audio as a selectable source; the exact controls depend on the vehicle and audio system. Check the Ford owner-manual library for your vehicle’s procedure.
How to play music from your phone in an old car
First check the factory radio for AUX, FM radio, and any vehicle-specific Bluetooth compatibility. Then choose a connection route that matches the inputs and whether you want to keep the original stereo.

These are different connection methods, not interchangeable universal accessories. Crutchfield’s overview of ways to add Bluetooth describes broad retrofit categories, but the page identifies itself as an archive and may be outdated; verify current product availability and exact compatibility before buying.
What to check before replacing a car stereo
On newer cars, the stereo may be connected to climate controls or other vehicle functions. Replacing it can require a vehicle-specific mounting kit and wiring adapters to retain features you use. Check the exact year, make, model, trim, and factory audio package, and confirm what the proposed installation hardware preserves. If you want to keep the original stereo, a compatible adapter may avoid a full replacement, but compatibility is specific to the vehicle and radio. If you are comfortable with a receiver installation, compare the required hardware and retained features before choosing a replacement.
Why won’t my phone pair with my car?
Try the vehicle maker’s model-specific troubleshooting steps first. Chevrolet’s Bluetooth pairing support recommends checking software and Bluetooth settings, making the phone discoverable, pairing through the vehicle’s device menu, and confirming the code. It also notes that stored credentials can be lost, in which case pairing again may be necessary.

- Confirm Bluetooth is turned on in both the phone and the car.
- Make the phone discoverable during pairing, if the phone requires that step.
- Check for software updates where the manufacturer provides them.
- Remove an old pairing from one or both devices, then try pairing again. If several phones are saved, check which one is currently active.

Bluetooth audio, calls, and phone projection are different
Bluetooth pairing can support hands-free calls, music streaming, or both, depending on the vehicle’s equipment. Confirm the functions supported by your exact stereo rather than assuming that call pairing includes music. Phone projection systems such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are separate features; these instructions cover Bluetooth pairing and audio, not projection setup.
