To use a controller in PCSX-Reloaded (PCSX-R), first make sure your operating system recognizes it, then configure and map it in the controller or input plugin selected for the emulator’s first controller. Finally, check whether the game expects Digital or Analog mode. The exact menu labels and controls vary by build and plugin, so there is no single setup path that applies to every PCSX-R installation.
How PCSX-R handles controller input
PCSX-Reloaded uses the PSEMU plugin interface for much of its functionality, and its project README says that a number of plugins are included. Controller setup therefore depends on the input plugin available in your particular build. Some PCSX-R setup guidance specifically directs users to select a controller plugin for the first controller.

That means connecting a gamepad to your computer does not necessarily configure it in the emulator. The operating system must recognize the device, and the selected plugin must expose controls that you can map. Plugin names, settings panels, and the wording of menu items can differ between builds.

Connect the controller and check the operating system
Connect your gamepad, then confirm that your operating system recognizes it before changing PCSX-R settings. If the device is not recognized by the host, troubleshoot the connection or operating-system support first; changing an emulator mapping will not fix a device the system cannot see.

Open the controller or input plugin settings
In PCSX-R’s configuration, locate the controller or input plugin associated with the first controller and open its configuration. A PCSX-R setup guide identifies selecting a controller plugin for that controller as part of setup. The exact menu path and label depend on your build, so look for the plugin-selection or controller-configuration area rather than relying on a universal sequence of menu names.

Map the controls in the plugin
Use the plugin’s own controls to assign the gamepad’s directional inputs and buttons to the corresponding PlayStation controls. If you prefer keyboard input, legacy PCSX setup guidance also describes assigning controls to a keyboard. Save or apply the mapping using the option provided by your plugin.

Check Digital or Analog mode
Legacy PCSX setup guidance describes Digital and Analog controller modes. Choose the mode that the game supports or expects; a correct button mapping may still behave incorrectly if the selected controller mode does not suit the game. The available material does not establish one mode as right for every title.

Gamepad, joystick, or keyboard?
PCSX setup guidance supports configuring either keyboard or joystick input, while the plugin workflow also accommodates a physical gamepad when the host system and selected plugin expose it. The practical choice depends on whether you want a physical controller and whether the installed plugin can map that device.

- Joystick or gamepad: Use one when the operating system recognizes it and the PCSX-R input plugin provides controls for mapping it.
- Digital or Analog mode: This is a separate choice from the physical device; select the mode appropriate to the game.
The available documentation does not verify compatibility for specific contemporary controller models, Bluetooth connections, or drivers across PCSX-R builds. A wired USB PC gamepad is a reasonable category to consider, but check support in your operating system and actual input plugin rather than assuming a particular model will work.
If the controller does not respond
Work through these checks in order; they are general troubleshooting steps based on the plugin-based setup, not a guarantee that every failure has the same cause.

- Confirm that the operating system recognizes the controller.
- Return to PCSX-R’s configuration and verify that you opened the settings for the input plugin assigned to the first controller.
- Check that the directional inputs and buttons are mapped in that plugin and that the changes were saved or applied.
- Check whether the game requires Digital or Analog mode and select the appropriate option.
Build and compatibility caveats
The PCSX-Reloaded project README describes build paths for Windows, Linux, and macOS, but those build details are legacy documentation, not a guarantee about current packages or controller support. Compatibility depends on the particular build, operating system, and input plugin. Check the documentation for the version you have installed if its menus or plugin choices differ from the steps above.
