Check the app that deleted the item—such as Google Photos, your phone’s Gallery, or Files by Google—then look for a copy in the account or backup that was already syncing it. Restore items from the correct Trash promptly; if they are no longer there, a separate backup may be your remaining option. There is no documented universal countdown for when deleted Android data is overwritten.
Start with the app that deleted the item
Trash is generally managed by individual apps, not by Android as a whole. A photo may have been deleted in Google Photos or a manufacturer’s Gallery; a document may have been removed in Files by Google or another file manager. Each app can have its own Trash, retention rules, and recovery steps. A gallery view may show local files, backed-up cloud content, or both.

Identify the app and account used when the item disappeared. Check that app first rather than assuming one Trash contains everything.

Google Photos or your phone’s Gallery
Open Google Photos and inspect its Trash. Select the item and choose Restore if it is there. If you deleted the item in a manufacturer’s Gallery, check that app’s Trash too; steps and availability vary by device. Google’s documented guidance says, “If a deleted photo or video isn’t in your Google Photos or Gallery trash, you can’t restore it” through those Trash paths. For an unbacked-up item deleted from a device running Android 11 or later, Google’s Photos guidance gives a 30-day Trash period. This is specific to that situation; do not treat it as a universal retention period for every Google Photos item.
Files by Google
- Open Files by Google.
- Tap Menu, then Trash.
- Select the file and tap Restore.
Files by Google says items remain in Trash for 30 days before automatic deletion. Files manually deleted from Trash are permanently deleted. Its “Junk files” clean action is different: files deleted using that action are permanently deleted rather than moved to Trash. Files by Google Help and Google’s Junk files instructions

Samsung Galaxy Gallery
Check Gallery’s Trash on the Galaxy device and, if you used it, check Google Photos separately. Samsung India’s guidance says items are permanently deleted after 60 days in Gallery Trash. That regional guidance is not a guarantee for every Galaxy model or market; Samsung notes that screens and availability can vary by provider, software version, and device. Look for a copy in an existing backup
Google Photos library
Sign in to the Google account that may have backed up the media. Check Google Photos and photos.google.com. Backed-up photos can remain in the Photos library after their device copies are removed—for example, after using “Free up space.” Verify that the item is backed up before using that feature. Finding a copy in the library is different from restoring a local copy from Trash. Google Photos Help
Android device backup
On the phone, open Settings → Google → Backup and review what is included. Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS among the categories that may be backed up, but warns that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. A device backup is not a universal undelete function.
Google says other backed-up device data is restored during initial setup or after a factory reset, subject to Android-version conditions. Samsung sync and other copies
Samsung support describes Gallery sync moving from Samsung Cloud to Microsoft OneDrive. Whether a relevant copy exists depends on the device, region, settings, and account. Check OneDrive only if you had enabled it. Likewise, check a computer, another cloud account, or an app’s own backup only if you actually used that service; an unconfigured service cannot supply a copy retroactively.

What “overwritten” means for Android recovery
The official instructions above describe Trash and backups, not a universal overwrite countdown. They do not establish how long deleted data remains recoverable from internal storage, a recovery probability, or a guarantee that a recovery app, computer connection, or rooting will retrieve permanently deleted data. The word “overwritten” should not be taken to mean every item has a predictable number of hours or days left.
For photos and files, the most dependable documented checks are the app’s own Trash and copies in accounts or backups that were already active. If the item is absent from Trash and no existing copy is available, the cited guidance does not establish another general recovery route. Removable-card recovery and app-specific data may require separate, device- or app-specific guidance.

If you still cannot find the item
- Confirm you checked the app and account that handled the deletion, including any separate Gallery and Google Photos Trash.
- Check only cloud or computer backups that were already configured before deletion.
- For a manufacturer Gallery, use support instructions for your device and region; menu names and availability may vary.
- For app-specific data or a removable memory card, consult guidance for that particular app or storage type. The cited Trash guidance does not settle those cases.
