It supports native FLAC decoding, uses installed FFmpeg libraries for many other formats, and can play CUE sheets and playlists. It may suit listeners who want a focused player and are comfortable checking their ALSA device and system libraries; it does not guarantee bit-perfect output or native DSD playback.
What PCM Transport is—and what it is not
PCM Transport is an independently maintained Linux audio player by Andrey Berestov, with Aleksandr Vysotskiy listed as a contributor. Its GTK 3 interface is designed for local-file playback, with direct ALSA output, optional audio processing and playback-path diagnostics. The project website describes it as “Not a music library manager, just honest playback with a visible signal path.” It integrates with MPRIS for desktop media controls, multimedia keys and cover-art metadata, but it is not presented as a cataloguing or library-management application.
The project’s question, “Why another Linux audio player?”, is answered by that narrower focus: direct output options and visibility into playback, alongside CUE, playlist and gapless support. The official pages do not provide an independent comparative listening test, so those features should not be read as evidence that it sounds better than another player.
Which audio formats does it play?
FLAC has a native decoding path through libFLAC. Other audio formats are handled through the FFmpeg libraries installed on the system, so support for less common codecs depends on how those libraries were built. The ffmpeg and ffprobe command-line programs are not required.

The examples are not a promise that every file will decode on every distribution: FFmpeg codec availability varies with the local library build. DSF and DFF files are converted to PCM; the project explicitly says native DSD output is unavailable. [Project README; PCM Transport website]
How does audio output work?
PCM Transport uses ALSA for audio output. The project website says, “Direct ALSA playback — no PulseAudio or PipeWire required.” That describes an available output approach, not a guarantee that every Linux installation will bypass all software conversion or produce end-to-end bit-perfect playback.
For a direct hardware route, the README recommends selecting the ALSA hw:X,Y device and avoiding forced conversion rules. The chosen device, ALSA configuration and playback settings all matter. If the hardware device is busy or unavailable, a direct route may fail; check the ALSA device selection and system audio configuration rather than assuming the file format is unsupported.

What processing and diagnostics are included?
The player includes Baxandall-like bass and treble controls, configurable output precision and sample-rate conversion using SoXR, with FFmpeg SWR as a fallback. Processing is optional. The documented conditions for bypassing the tone-processing path are neutral tone settings, 0 dB Pre-EQ headroom and 100% soft volume.

It therefore cannot establish that no clipping occurs elsewhere between the player, ALSA configuration, hardware and listening equipment.
Linux compatibility and installation
The project lists Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, ALT Linux and similar distributions, and supports X11 and Wayland through GTK. Documented runtime minimums include GTK 3.16, GLib/GIO 2.52, libFLAC 1.3.3 and FFmpeg 4.4 shared libraries for libavformat, libavcodec, libavutil and libswresample. These are requirements to check against the target distribution; optional RTKit or direct CAP_SYS_NICE handling is not required for the basic player.

The wildcard commands work only if the downloaded filename matches that pattern; use the exact filename if it does not.
Build from source
The project also documents a CMake source build, with dependency packages listed for Arch, Debian/Ubuntu and ALT Linux. Build against the FFmpeg libraries supplied by the target distribution: the project does not claim compatibility across major FFmpeg ABI versions. Installation is optional for running from the build directory; the documented install route can add a binary, desktop entry and icons.

The repository README header displays v0.9.120, while the Releases page lists v0.9.117, dated August 31, as its latest displayed release. Because these official pages disagree, the release number alone does not establish which downloadable build is current. Check the release asset and its notes on the live Releases page before downloading.

The listed v0.9.117 notes describe deterministic final 16-bit rounding options, optional high-pass TPDF dither (off by default and used only when final S16 quantization is required), strict explicit 24-bit ALSA container selections, and documentation updates. Earlier release notes describe expanded output-precision controls and diagnostics.
Who is PCM Transport a good fit for?

Consider it if you use Linux, play local files, want CUE and playlist support, or specifically need to configure ALSA output directly.

Check first if you rely on an uncommon codec, because decoding depends on the system’s FFmpeg libraries, or if you need a particular hardware output device to work through ALSA.

Look elsewhere or pair it with another tool if your priority is music-library management; that is not the project’s stated role.
