A redirect, iframe, or hosted payment field can keep card numbers out of your server and reduce your PCI scope, but it does not make the WordPress site automatically compliant. You still have to secure the store, confirm the correct Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) with your acquirer or processor, and keep evidence that the required controls operate.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The decisive issue is how payment data moves through your checkout. A full redirect to a provider generally creates the smallest merchant card-data environment. An embedded provider-hosted form can also reduce exposure, but PCI DSS v4.0.1 SAQ A r1 adds a script-attack eligibility condition for certain embedded architectures. A direct gateway, where card fields appear in your WooCommerce checkout, leaves substantially more security responsibility with you.

What PCI compliance means for WooCommerce
PCI DSS is the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. It applies to merchants that accept, process, transmit, or otherwise affect the security of payment-card data. WooCommerce is software; it is not a PCI exemption and it does not certify your store by itself. The store owner remains responsible for validating compliance with the acquiring bank or payment processor.
WooCommerce can be configured in ways that limit the cardholder-data environment. With a hosted redirect, customers leave your site and enter payment details on the provider’s page. With hosted fields, a provider-controlled iframe appears inside your checkout while the sensitive fields are served by that provider. With a direct gateway, your checkout page collects the card details and your server may transmit them to the gateway. Those arrangements have different PCI consequences.

Compliance is therefore a combination of payment architecture and operational security. Even if your server never receives a card number, it still runs the checkout page, scripts, administrator accounts, plugins, and redirect logic that can affect a payment transaction.
Start by mapping the payment flow
Before selecting an SAQ or promising customers that your store is compliant, document one complete purchase. Record what the shopper sees, which domain displays the card fields, where the browser posts the payment, and what your server stores in orders, logs, analytics, and support systems.
| Architecture | What the shopper sees | Merchant handling of card data | Typical PCI implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full redirect | The shopper is sent to a payment provider’s page and may return to the store after authorization. | The WooCommerce server should not receive the card number. | Often the narrowest scope and may support SAQ A when every eligibility condition is met. |
| Provider-hosted iframe or fields | Payment fields appear in your checkout, but the sensitive controls are loaded from the provider. | The browser sends the sensitive values directly to the provider; your page still supplies the surrounding script and frame. | Can support SAQ A or another questionnaire only when the processor confirms eligibility. SAQ A r1 requires confirmation that the site is not susceptible to script attacks affecting the e-commerce system for the applicable embedded designs. |
| Direct checkout form | Card fields are native fields on the WooCommerce checkout. | Your site handles or transmits card data, even if a gateway receives it immediately. | Usually a larger cardholder-data environment, more controls, and potentially a higher PCI validation level. |
| Server-side API or custom integration | The shopper may remain on your checkout while your server calls the gateway. | Your application can receive, process, or pass card data. | Scope depends on the exact implementation and must be assessed with the acquirer or processor; do not assume a hosted label applies to custom code. |
Take screenshots of each checkout state, list every payment extension and checkout script, and note whether refunds, saved cards, subscriptions, wallets, and 3-D Secure use the same flow. A store can have more than one architecture if it offers several gateways.
SAQ A, SAQ A-EP, and why the processor decides
An SAQ is a self-assessment, not a universal permission slip. The payment brand, acquiring bank, or processor determines which questionnaire and supporting documents it will accept. Ask for that determination in writing before treating a particular SAQ as your compliance plan.
When SAQ A may fit
SAQ A is intended for eligible card-not-present merchants that outsource all account-data functions to validated third parties and do not electronically store, process, or transmit cardholder data in their own systems. Eligibility is conditional: every criterion must be true, not merely the use of a familiar gateway.
For embedded payment pages covered by PCI DSS v4.0.1 SAQ A r1, PCI Security Standards Council FAQ 1588 requires the merchant to confirm that its site is not susceptible to script attacks that could affect the merchant’s e-commerce system. A payment iframe alone does not answer that question. Your scripts, content-management system, plugins, and administrative controls still matter.

When SAQ A-EP may be relevant
SAQ A-EP is associated with e-commerce merchants whose website can affect the security of a payment transaction even though card-data functions are outsourced. An embedded checkout that depends on your page, scripts, or redirect logic can fall into this type of assessment when it does not satisfy SAQ A’s stricter eligibility requirements.
Do not select SAQ A-EP simply because it sounds safer, and do not select SAQ A simply because a plugin advertises “PCI compliant.” Give the processor your actual data-flow diagram, extension configuration, domains, and customizations. The same gateway can have different validation consequences for different implementations.
When a direct integration changes the question
If your server receives card data, stores it, or controls a payment form that posts card data through your infrastructure, you may need a more extensive assessment than SAQ A or SAQ A-EP. The exact questionnaire depends on what systems can access the data and what the acquirer requires. A direct gateway also increases the importance of server hardening, application security, access control, logging, and vulnerability management.
Hosted gateways: what they reduce and what they do not
Hosted collection is usually the most practical way for a small or midsize WooCommerce store to avoid handling raw card numbers. It reduces the number of systems that can touch card data and can simplify tokenization, recurring billing, and fraud controls. It does not transfer every security duty to the provider.

- Any payment data that enters orders, logs, exports, support tickets, analytics, or backups must be identified and handled appropriately.
PCI SSC specifically identifies password, authentication, and patching duties for merchant-managed redirect mechanisms. A provider’s validated environment protects the provider’s systems; it does not patch your store or inspect every script running on your checkout page.

| WooPayments | Hosted payment fields keep sensitive payment information in the payment partner’s validated environment. | WooCommerce describes WooPayments as a PCI DSS Level 1 service provider. The store still has website security and vulnerability-management duties, and the processor must confirm the appropriate SAQ. | Capabilities depend on the account and enabled WooCommerce features; verify supported countries, currencies, wallets, and recurring-payment behavior before deployment. |
| Stripe extension with Elements | Stripe Elements embeds a Stripe-hosted interface in an iframe. | WooCommerce states that the site does not store, process, or transmit card data through this integration and that most merchants can validate through SAQ A, subject to account and merchant-level factors. The SAQ eligibility conditions still apply. | Check the extension’s current settings for 3-D Secure, wallets, saved payment methods, and webhooks; each added feature should be included in your flow map. |
| CyberSource Flex Microform | Hosted fields send sensitive payment information directly to CyberSource. | The merchant’s server is kept out of the direct card-data path, but the checkout page, scripts, access control, and maintenance remain in scope for the applicable assessment. | The extension supports 3-D Secure and Decision Manager. |
| Square extension | WooCommerce documents it as an SAQ-A PCI-compliant integration. | That description applies to the documented integration; validate your configuration and any custom checkout changes with the processor. | Supports 3-D Secure and inventory synchronization according to WooCommerce documentation. |
| Direct gateways | Payment fields are displayed directly on the WooCommerce checkout. | WooCommerce developer documentation says these integrations require server security such as SSL and may require a higher PCI compliance level. Your form, server, and application become central to the card-data risk assessment. | Use only when the business benefit justifies the larger security and maintenance burden. |
A practical PCI compliance process
1. Inventory every payment path
- List every enabled gateway, wallet, subscription method, refund path, and saved-card feature.
- For each one, identify the page that collects payment details, the domain serving the fields, the endpoint receiving the submission, and the systems receiving the response.
- Include staging sites, mobile or headless storefronts, support tools, analytics tags, webhooks, and custom checkout code.
- Record whether card data can appear in browser storage, server logs, order notes, exports, emails, or backups. Remove unnecessary collection and retention.
2. Choose the least-exposed architecture that meets the business need
Prefer a full redirect or provider-hosted fields when the user experience, countries, currencies, recurring billing, wallet support, and fraud controls fit the store. Avoid adding custom code that moves card data back through your server. If a direct form is required, treat the checkout and its hosting environment as a significant security project rather than a simple plugin installation.
3. Obtain the provider’s compliance evidence
Keep the provider’s current Attestation of Compliance or equivalent service-provider evidence, integration documentation, and instructions for your specific extension. A provider’s Level 1 status demonstrates the provider’s validation; it is not your merchant validation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Confirm the SAQ with the acquirer or processor
- Send the processor your payment-flow diagram and the exact extension name and version.
- Explain whether the checkout redirects, embeds an iframe, or submits a direct form.
- Disclose custom scripts, themes, headless components, subscriptions, and any server-side payment code.
- Ask which SAQ, Attestation of Compliance, vulnerability scan, and quarterly or annual evidence it requires.
- For an embedded flow under SAQ A r1, verify how you will demonstrate that the site is not susceptible to script attacks affecting the e-commerce system.
5. Secure the WordPress environment
- Patch WordPress core, WooCommerce, themes, plugins, PHP, the operating system, and hosting components on a defined schedule.
- Remove abandoned plugins, themes, administrator accounts, test sites, and unused payment extensions.
- Use unique administrator credentials, strong authentication, and least privilege. Give agencies and developers only the access they need, and review it when work ends.
- Enforce HTTPS across the storefront, administration area, webhooks, and return URLs. Keep certificates and TLS configuration current.
- Restrict who can install plugins, edit theme files, change checkout scripts, or alter payment settings.
- Protect redirect mechanisms and webhook endpoints against unauthorized changes, replay, and forged status updates.
- Maintain reliable backups, restoration procedures, and an incident process that identifies who contacts the processor and acquirer.
6. Control checkout scripts and page integrity
For hosted fields, the payment provider controls the sensitive input, but your page controls the environment in which that input appears. Maintain an inventory of scripts that execute on checkout, document why each is present, restrict changes, and review additions before deployment. A marketing tag, chat widget, optimization script, or compromised plugin can change the risk even when the card field itself is in an iframe.
Under the SAQ A r1 script-attack criterion, the relevant question is whether your site could be attacked through scripts in a way that affects the e-commerce system. Keep change records, access logs, plugin update records, and any script-integrity or monitoring evidence your processor requires.
7. Scan, test, and remediate as required
Some merchants and integrations require external vulnerability scans; others do not. Follow the processor’s written requirements rather than assuming that a scan is unnecessary or universally mandatory. Retain scan reports, remediation tickets, retest results, penetration-test evidence where required, and dates of significant changes.
8. Complete the SAQ and preserve an evidence pack
Your evidence pack should connect each answer to a document or record: the data-flow diagram, provider compliance evidence, gateway configuration, access reviews, patch records, script inventory, scan reports, change-management tickets, backup tests, and incident procedures. Record the assessment date, responsible person, processor contact, and the next review trigger.

What security work remains after outsourcing card processing?
WordPress and plugin maintenance
A hosted gateway cannot compensate for an outdated plugin that lets an attacker change checkout code, steal administrator sessions, or redirect customers. Establish an update owner, test updates in a controlled environment, deploy promptly, and document exceptions with a remediation deadline.
Administrator access
Use separate accounts for each person, prohibit shared administrator logins, apply least privilege, and remove access promptly when a contractor leaves. Review administrator and developer access regularly. Protect password-reset channels and require stronger authentication for privileged users.
Redirects, webhooks, and payment status
Return URLs and webhooks are part of the payment workflow. Validate signatures or authentication methods supplied by the provider, restrict endpoint access where supported, and ensure an unauthenticated browser parameter cannot mark an unpaid order as paid. Keep redirect configuration changes in your change log.
Data minimization
Do not put full card numbers or security codes into order notes, support tickets, spreadsheets, email, logs, or analytics. Configure logging and error reporting so payment requests cannot be copied into general-purpose monitoring systems. Keep only the tokens and transaction references the business actually needs.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The gateway is PCI compliant, so my store is compliant.”
Why it fails: The provider’s certification covers the provider’s validated service, not your WordPress installation. Correction: Obtain the provider evidence, map your implementation, and complete the merchant SAQ and controls required by the processor.
Best Value
“An iframe means I automatically qualify for SAQ A.”
Why it fails: SAQ A eligibility has multiple conditions, including the SAQ A r1 script-attack confirmation for applicable embedded payment pages. Correction: Ask the processor to confirm eligibility for your exact page, scripts, and customizations.
“We only need HTTPS.”
Why it fails: Encryption in transit does not patch vulnerable plugins, restrict administrators, secure redirects, or control checkout scripts. Correction: Treat TLS as one control in a broader maintenance, access, change-management, and vulnerability program.
Recommended Free Tools
“We can install several gateways and decide later.”
Why it fails: Each gateway can create a different data flow and assessment scope. Correction: Inventory every enabled method, disable unused integrations, and include each live flow in the processor discussion.
“The plugin handles tokens, so stored-card risk is gone.”
Why it fails: Tokens reduce exposure only when implemented correctly; logs, exports, webhooks, and custom code can still expose payment information or account data. Correction: Trace the complete lifecycle, restrict access, and verify what is stored and where.
How to select a PCI-aware WooCommerce extension
Use this checklist before installation or a gateway migration:
- Collection model: Is it a full redirect, provider-hosted iframe, hosted fields, or direct form?
- Data path: Does the browser or your server transmit card data, and can any value enter logs or order records?
- Validation: What SAQ does the provider document, and will your acquirer accept it for your account?
- Script exposure: Which scripts run on checkout, who can change them, and what evidence supports the SAQ A r1 script condition if applicable?
- Authentication: Does it support 3-D Secure, and how are challenge results returned and verified?
- Tokenization: Are saved cards represented by provider tokens, and are tokens isolated from unnecessary staff access?
- Operations: Are refunds, subscriptions, wallets, webhooks, and failed-payment retries included in the documented flow?
- Geography: Are your countries, currencies, settlement rules, and legal entity supported?
- Maintenance: Is the extension actively updated, and can you receive security notices and update it without editing payment code?
- Evidence: Can you retain the provider’s compliance documents, configuration details, and support responses for your assessment file?
When to revisit your assessment
Review the payment flow whenever you change gateways, add a wallet or subscription feature, install a checkout or marketing plugin, move hosting, launch a headless storefront, add a new administrator group, or change webhook and redirect logic. A previously acceptable SAQ can become inaccurate after a seemingly small checkout customization.
Also revisit it after a security incident, failed vulnerability scan, major WordPress or WooCommerce architecture change, or a processor notice that changes its validation requirements. Keep the old diagram and assessment with the change record so you can show what changed and when.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways for store owners
- WooCommerce stores that accept cards fall under PCI DSS; outsourcing payment collection narrows scope but does not eliminate merchant responsibility.
- Map the real browser, server, script, redirect, webhook, and storage paths before choosing an SAQ.
- Hosted redirects and provider-hosted fields usually reduce direct card-data exposure. Direct forms generally create more security work and may require a higher validation level.
- SAQ A is available only when every eligibility criterion is satisfied. For applicable embedded flows, SAQ A r1 requires confirmation that the site is not susceptible to script attacks affecting the e-commerce system.
- Keep WordPress, WooCommerce, plugins, themes, hosting, administrator access, checkout scripts, redirects, and vulnerability-management records secure and current.
- Use the processor or acquirer—not a plugin marketing label—as the authority for your final SAQ and evidence requirements.
