This restores BIOS settings to defaults and may help when a setting is preventing startup, but it will not fix every no-POST problem.
What clearing CMOS can—and cannot—do
Clearing CMOS resets saved BIOS setup values to their defaults. ASUS says those values include the date, time, BIOS password, and setup parameters; Intel likewise describes clearing CMOS as restoring BIOS defaults. Intel notes that it may help with no-boot or no-display problems because it restores default settings: Intel’s CMOS reset guidance.

This procedure does not require a working display or access to BIOS setup. It also does not rewrite or recover BIOS firmware, repair a failed motherboard, or establish that a BIOS setting caused the problem. If the failure began after a BIOS update, use the motherboard maker’s separate firmware recovery instructions.
Find the right reset method for your motherboard
Before opening the case, identify the exact motherboard model and consult its official manual or support page. Board layouts and supported procedures differ. A board may have a clear-CMOS button, labeled reset pins, or a battery arrangement described in its manual. ASUS documents all three approaches and directs users to check the instructions for their particular model: ASUS’s clear-CMOS instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- Please check the 4th image. It clearly demonstrates the connector detail,2 pins and 2 wires with REVERSE polarity.
- The core component is CR2032,with thickness of 3.2mm and diameter of 20mm
- The core component was produced by Japanese battery giant, which assure the quality of RTC( real time clock) battery and a long life span
- The professional packaging solution,anti-static bag, provides the sufficient protection on the cmos batteries.
- The sticky pad on the other side of CMOS battery provides the flexible application when you replace the CMOS battery.Easily peel off the paper backing and replace it with convenience.
Look for labels such as CLR_CMOS, CLRTC, or JBAT1, but do not assume that a label, pin location, or procedure applies across models. Never short unidentified contacts. Intel’s guidance is scoped to systems with Intel boxed desktop processors; for motherboard-specific details, consult the board manufacturer.
Clear CMOS safely
- Shut down and disconnect power. Turn the computer off and unplug its power cord before using a clear button, pins, or the battery procedure. MSI also requires the power supply to be completely disconnected before shorting JBAT1 or removing the battery. Follow the precautions in your own board’s manual.
- Use only the documented method. If the manual specifies a dedicated button, designated pins, or battery removal, follow that procedure and its stated timing exactly. For example, ASUS gives a hold or short duration of about 5–10 seconds for the button or pins it describes; this is not a universal timing for every motherboard.
- Check the battery design before removing anything. Some boards use a coin-cell holder, while others use a wired, two-pin battery. Follow the instructions for the specific design. Removing a battery is not guaranteed to work identically on every board, and clearing CMOS alone is not a reason to buy a replacement battery.
- Reconnect power and start the PC. If the board displays a reset notice or startup prompt, follow it. The manufacturer’s instructions may direct you to enter setup, load optimized defaults, and save. Set the date and time if needed, then review custom settings before restoring any you relied on.
If there is still no display or POST
Do not keep repeating the reset without checking other causes. First confirm that the monitor is powered on, the video cable is seated at both ends, and the monitor is set to the correct input. Check whether the system powers on and note any motherboard diagnostic light or error indicator that remains lit. MSI’s no-power and no-display troubleshooting guidance and ASUS’s no-power, no-boot, and no-display troubleshooting steps describe further checks.

Try a minimal component configuration
Follow the board maker’s instructions to test with only the essential components: CPU and cooler, one memory stick, power supply, and monitor. Disconnect other devices and expansion cards as directed. If the minimal setup starts, reconnect removed components one at a time to identify whether one changes the result. If it still does not start, use the motherboard’s diagnostic indicators and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting or support process rather than assuming CMOS was the cause.
