1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose PC speakers when you want sound shared around the room and want to stay aware of nearby people and sounds. Choose headphones when you need privacy or want to reduce the effect of room noise. For calls or voice chat, use a headset with a microphone—or keep speakers for playback and select a separate microphone. Neither speakers nor headphones are universally better for sound quality or gaming.
Choose by how you use your PC
| Your priority | Better fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Other people should hear the audio | Speakers | Sound is shared with the room, so it is not private. |
| Keep audio to yourself | Headphones | They reduce sound leakage compared with speakers, though they are not soundproof. |
| Hear nearby people or sounds | Speakers | Headphones can make it harder to notice what is happening around you. |
| Reduce distracting room noise | Headphones | Cushions can provide some isolation; the amount depends on the headphones and fit. |
| Listen with someone else | Speakers | Both listeners can hear without sharing or wearing headphones. |
| Make calls or use voice chat | Headset, or speakers plus a separate microphone | A headset combines headphones and a microphone. Windows also allows playback and recording devices to be selected separately. |
| Avoid wearing equipment | Speakers | Headphone comfort depends on personal fit, weight, and how long you wear them. |
These are practical differences, not a sound-quality ranking. Listening preferences and room conditions vary, and the available guidance does not establish that one option always sounds better or gives a gaming advantage.

When PC speakers make more sense
Choose speakers when you want audio available to people in the room, prefer not to wear anything on your head, or need to remain aware of your surroundings. Powered PC speakers or desktop stereo speakers are a straightforward option for a desk, provided their connection matches your computer.
Speakers are a poor fit when sound leakage would disturb others or when audio needs to remain private. Room acoustics and background noise also affect what you hear, so consider where the computer sits and who else uses the space.

- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
When headphones or a headset make more sense
Choose headphones when you listen alone, need more privacy, or want cushions to reduce the effect of ambient noise. They are also a practical choice when speakers would be disruptive. The trade-off is wearing the device: fit and comfort are personal, and headphones can reduce awareness of nearby sounds.
If you need a microphone for calls, voice chat, or voice annotations, a PC headset with microphone combines it with the headphones. If you would rather use speakers, you can select a separate microphone for recording while keeping speakers as the playback device.

Check connections before buying
PC speakers and headphones can use different connections. Common speaker setups include analog line-out, while some systems use digital connections; those examples are not a survey of every current product. Confirm the computer’s available output and the device’s input before purchasing. A USB audio adapter or cable is only appropriate if it supports the specific ports and audio devices involved.

Set playback and microphone devices in Windows
- Connect the speaker, headphones, or headset using a connection supported by both the PC and the audio device. For USB or Bluetooth devices, follow the device’s pairing or connection instructions.
- Open Windows audio settings and choose the desired output device for playback.
- If using a separate microphone, choose it as the input or recording device. A headset microphone can instead be selected as the input while the headset is used for playback.
- Test playback and microphone input in the app you plan to use. If a device is missing, check its connection or pairing and confirm that the intended output or input is selected.

ITU-T Recommendation H.872, issued in October 2024, addresses safe listening for gameplay and esports across PCs, game software, headphones, headsets, and other equipment. The WHO/ITU standard’s sample gameplay message recommends comfortable volume, 5–10 minute breaks each hour, and volume limiting where available. It also advises: “If you can’t hear external sounds while playing, it’s too loud.” Treat this as sample safety guidance, not a clinical guarantee or a personal threshold. Neither speakers nor headphones are inherently safe at high volume; pay attention to ringing or reduced hearing sensitivity.
