PC-98 Emulators Compared: Neko Project II, T98-Next, and DOSBox-X

A careful comparison of PC-98 emulator options, with a documented DOSBox-X setup and clear guidance on Neko Project II versus Kai and T98-Next's evidence limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal best PC-98 emulator. Choose DOSBox-X when you want a broadly documented DOS environment with a built-in PC-98 mode; choose a Neko Project II lineage core when your frontend already supports it and you need dedicated PC-98 hardware controls; consider T98-Next only when a legacy Windows workflow or a particular title gives you a reason to test it. Compatibility depends on the exact game or application, disk-image format, emulated model and sound hardware, host platform, and build.

Which PC-98 emulator should I use?

Start with the software you intend to run, not with a speed or accuracy ranking. None of the available documentation provides a controlled compatibility test across Neko Project II, T98-Next, and DOSBox-X, so a claim that one wins for every PC-98 title would be misleading. The practical decision is which emulator offers the controls and host support your target needs, followed by testing that title with its original disk-image format.

Emulator What is documented Best starting use Important qualification
DOSBox-X Official PC-98 mode, configuration and command-line activation, guidance for fonts, sound, graphics, keyboard layouts and disk images. The wider project also emulates DOS and Windows 3.x/9x/Me environments. A flexible, general-purpose package when you want one emulator with an explicit PC-98 setup path. Its broad feature set does not prove that every PC-98 program works. Test and adjust the target title.
Neko Project II The Libretro documentation describes PC-98 disk-image extensions and settings for model, CPU clock, memory and sound board. A dedicated PC-98 lineage when your operating system and frontend provide a suitable core. The documented Libretro core is the older Neko Project II core; the page says it has been superseded by Neko Project II Kai.
T98-Next A community overview describes historical goals including 486-class guest emulation, a GUI, external modules and improved compatibility. A legacy Windows-oriented alternative worth testing for software that specifically calls for it. Current official builds, host support and a present-day compatibility matrix are not established by the available primary documentation.

Use DOSBox-X for a documented, configurable starting point

DOSBox-X is the easiest of the three to approach from its published setup instructions. Its homepage lists release 2026.10.01, dated October 1, 2026. PC-98 mode is part of the normal package rather than a separate emulator download. You can select the machine type in a configuration file, then use the same program for other DOS-era environments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This flexibility is useful if your library mixes PC-98 software with conventional DOS applications or Windows 3.x, 9x or Me software. It also means there are more settings to understand. Treat the documented defaults as a baseline and change one variable at a time when a title needs different hardware behavior.

Use Neko Project II or Kai when your frontend and target fit that lineage

Neko Project II is a PC-98-focused emulator lineage commonly encountered through frontends such as Libretro. The documented core exposes model selection, CPU-clock choices, memory settings and sound-board options, along with PC-98 disk-image extensions. Those controls matter for software that checks the emulated machine or expects a particular audio board.

Check the exact core name supplied by your frontend. The Libretro page describes the older Neko Project II core and explicitly states that it has been superseded by Neko Project II Kai. A menu entry labelled Kai is therefore not simply another name for the documented older core; it is a distinct successor core with its own build and configuration history. Do not assume that a setting, save state or compatibility result from one automatically transfers to the other.

Try T98-Next only with a reason to prefer its workflow

T98-Next has a long-standing reputation in PC-98 discussions, and a community overview records goals such as emulating a 486-class guest, providing a graphical interface, supporting external modules and improving compatibility. Those are historical design aims, not a current guarantee. The available evidence does not verify a maintained official build, current host-platform coverage or compatibility with a particular modern title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have an existing Windows setup, a game-specific recommendation, or a configuration supplied by a preservation project, T98-Next may be worth testing. Otherwise, begin with an emulator whose current distribution and setup documentation you can verify for your operating system.

How do I run PC-98 games in DOSBox-X?

DOSBox-X can boot into PC-98 mode without additional files. The following procedure gives you a clean starting configuration; game images, ROMs and fonts must come from sources you are entitled to use.

  1. Install a current DOSBox-X build. The project homepage lists release 2026.10.01 (October 1, 2026). Use the build appropriate for your host operating system and keep the executable and configuration file together in a location you can find.
  2. Enable the machine type. Add machine=pc98 to the DOSBox-X configuration file. For a one-time test, launch it with dosbox-x -set machine=pc98. Starting this way confirms that the PC-98 machine profile is being selected before you spend time tuning a game.
  3. Mount a directory when you have extracted, legal files. At the DOSBox-X prompt, a directory can be exposed with a command such as MOUNT C /path/to/pc98; use the path syntax required by your host. This is appropriate for files that are meant to be accessed as a normal DOS directory.
  4. Mount disk images with IMGMOUNT. PC-98 software often uses HDI hard-disk images or floppy formats rather than the IMG files familiar from standard DOS guides. Use DOSBox-X’s IMGMOUNT command and specify the image type documented for that file, for example IMGMOUNT C game.hdi -t hdi for an HDI hard disk or the corresponding floppy type for a disk image. If the image does not mount, verify its extension and type instead of renaming it.
  5. Start the program from the mounted drive. Change to the assigned drive, list its contents with DIR, and run the title’s documented executable or batch file. Avoid adding memory managers, sound drivers or other DOS utilities until you know the game needs them; extra layers can obscure the cause of a failure.

Set up Japanese text and fonts

PC-98 software may display Japanese text through fonts that are not present in a generic DOS installation. The DOSBox-X PC-98 guide recommends a PC-98-specific font and documents several routes: a FONT.ROM file, the included FREECG98.BMP resource, TrueType font output, and FONTX2 configuration options. Pick the method supported by your build and the font file you are legally allowed to use.

If menus show garbled characters, squares or blank glyphs while the program otherwise runs, fix the font configuration before changing CPU speed. Confirm that the font path is correct, restart DOSBox-X after editing the configuration, and test a Japanese text screen again. A font problem is independent of disk-image compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add sound only when the title needs it

Some games require SOUND.ROM for music and sound effects. DOSBox-X also lets you select an FM sound-board emulation; its guide says the board86 choice should work fine in most cases. Start with that setting, then try another board only if the title’s instructions or its symptoms point to a hardware mismatch.

No sound is not always an emulator failure. It can indicate that the image lacks a required file, that the game is configured for a different board, or that the title’s setup program has music disabled. Check those possibilities separately.

Leave the GDC clock at its default first

The guide recommends leaving the graphics display controller (GDC) clock at the default 2.5 MHz. It notes that some games require 2.5 MHz and very few require 5 MHz. Use 5 MHz only when a specific title is known to need it; this is DOSBox-X’s configuration advice, not a universal rule for Neko Project II, Kai or T98-Next.

Choose a keyboard layout deliberately

Readers outside Japan can use DOSBox-X’s PC-98 keyboard-layout options, including the documented way to force an IBM/U.S. layout. If keyboard commands do not match the labels on your physical keyboard, set the layout explicitly rather than guessing at scan codes. Keep a note of the chosen layout in the per-game configuration so another title does not inherit an unsuitable mapping.

What is the difference between Neko Project II and Neko Project II Kai?

Neko Project II is the name of the original emulator/core lineage documented on the cited Libretro page. That page lists controls for the emulated PC-98 model, CPU clock, memory and sound board, plus supported PC-98 disk-image extensions. It also says the core has been superseded by Neko Project II Kai.

Kai should therefore be treated as a successor core, not as a spelling variant or a guaranteed drop-in replacement. The distinction matters in three practical ways:

  • Core selection: A frontend may expose both names, or only Kai. Read the core information screen and confirm which one is actually loaded.
  • Configuration: Model, clock, memory and sound options can be presented differently by the frontend. Recreate the settings for Kai instead of importing assumptions from an older Neko Project II profile.
  • Save states and troubleshooting: Save states are generally tied to an emulator core and version. If a state fails after switching cores, use the game’s own save system and retest from a clean boot.

The available documentation does not provide a complete, title-by-title compatibility comparison between the older core and Kai. Select the core that is maintained for your platform, supports the image format you have, and behaves correctly with the specific software you want to run.

Does T98-Next still work with PC-98 games?

It may work for particular legacy configurations, but current capability cannot be stated confidently from the available primary evidence. The community overview is useful for understanding T98-Next’s historical direction—486-class guest emulation, a GUI, external modules and compatibility improvements—but it does not establish a current official release schedule, supported operating systems or a modern compatibility list.

If you test it, record the exact build, host operating system, disk-image type and hardware settings. That information is essential because “T98-Next works” is not a meaningful answer without a title and configuration. A failure in one build does not prove that every historical build behaved the same way, and a successful launch does not establish broad compatibility.

How to choose settings for a difficult title

Use the following order so that each change answers a specific question:

  1. Identify the image. Determine whether the software is an HDI hard-disk image, a floppy image or a directory of files. Mount it using the matching DOSBox-X method or the format supported by your Neko Project II-family frontend.
  2. Confirm the machine profile. Select the PC-98 machine type and, where available, the model documented by the game’s manual or setup notes.
  3. Keep timing conservative. Start with the default CPU and GDC clocks. Change the GDC from 2.5 MHz to 5 MHz only for a title-specific reason.
  4. Match audio hardware. Start with the documented default or board86 in DOSBox-X. Add SOUND.ROM when the game requires it.
  5. Fix text and controls. Configure a PC-98 font and the keyboard layout before diagnosing gameplay logic.
  6. Retest from a clean launch. Close and reopen the emulator after configuration changes. Test one change at a time and keep a known-working profile.

Common problems and targeted fixes

The emulator starts, but the disk will not boot

Check the image type and drive assignment first. An HDI image mounted as a floppy, or a floppy image mounted as a hard disk, can fail before the game itself is involved. Verify the file is complete and that the command uses the correct image-type option.

The game boots but Japanese text is unreadable

Install or point DOSBox-X to a PC-98-compatible font using one of its documented methods: FONT.ROM, FREECG98.BMP, TrueType output or FONTX2 settings. Restart after editing the configuration and test a text-heavy screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Music or effects are missing

Check whether the title expects SOUND.ROM, then verify the selected FM board. In DOSBox-X, board86 is the guide’s general starting recommendation. If the game has a setup utility, select the same board there.

Timing or graphics look wrong

Restore the GDC clock to 2.5 MHz and the emulator’s default timing, then retest. Only move to 5 MHz when the title’s documentation or a reproducible symptom justifies it. Do not transfer DOSBox-X timing advice directly to another emulator core.

Keys do not match the keyboard

Set the PC-98 keyboard option deliberately, using the IBM/U.S. layout when appropriate for a non-Japanese keyboard. Test cursor, function and symbol keys in the game’s input screen before changing other hardware settings.

Legal and preservation considerations

Emulators are programs; game disks, ROMs, fonts and sound files are separate materials. Use only software and firmware files you are entitled to use in your jurisdiction. The existence of a FONT.ROM or SOUND.ROM setting does not establish that a particular file is freely redistributable. Keep original manuals or preservation notes with your images so model, disk and sound requirements remain traceable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a reliable personal library, store per-title configuration files, the emulator name and version, image format, controller layout and any required font or sound resources. That makes it possible to reproduce a working setup when you change frontends or move from the older Neko Project II core to Kai.
