If your Cricut cuts around a sticker image but the outline is off-center, start by separating an alignment error from a scanning or print-scaling error. Run Print Then Cut calibration in Design Space, print the calibration sheet at its original size, and follow the guided center-square test. If the machine cannot read the registration marks, fix lighting, mat placement, wrinkles, or material compatibility before calibrating again.
Cricut describes calibration as the process that makes the machine cut precisely along the edge of a printed image. The procedure is model- and platform-specific, so use the prompts for the exact machine selected in Design Space.

First, identify what is actually wrong
A sticker that is consistently shifted but scans normally usually needs calibration. A project that is rejected, pauses while searching, or produces an unreadable-mark message has a scanning problem. A cut that is the right distance from the artwork but the wrong size often points to print scaling or an altered Print Then Cut workflow rather than a blade-position offset.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| What you see | Most likely area | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The cut is shifted in the same direction on otherwise readable projects. | Print Then Cut calibration | Run the calibration flow and complete the center-square and fine-calibration tests. |
| The machine cannot find or read the black registration marks. | Lighting, wrinkles, mat position, or material finish | Use smooth, correctly placed material under even lighting; then retry the scan. |
| The cut is uniformly too large or too small. | Printer scaling or a changed print workflow | Print from Design Space without “fit to page,” resizing, or PDF reprinting. |
| Only one design layer is being cut instead of the intended outside edge. | Layer construction | Flatten the artwork before sending it to Print Then Cut. |
| Scanning fails during calibration and the sensor light never turns on. | Sensor-light or hardware fault | Stop repeating calibration and contact Cricut Member Care. |
Do not recalibrate to solve every symptom. Calibration changes the machine’s relationship to the printed image; it cannot make a reflective sheet readable, restore a page that was printed at the wrong scale, or merge layered cut paths into one outline.

Prepare the calibration print correctly
Cricut’s current calibration guidance specifies a simple calibration page. The paper and printer settings matter because the machine uses the printed geometry as its reference.
- Print in portrait orientation.
- Use black ink on white, non-textured copy paper.
- Print one page per sheet; do not place multiple pages on one sheet.
- Keep the printer’s normal margins. Cricut gives ideal top and left margins of 0.5 to 1.5 inches.
- Do not use narrow margins, edge-to-edge printing, enlargement, reduction, or a “fit to page”/“scale to fit” option.
- Do not center-align the page in the printer dialog; retain the calibration layout supplied by Design Space.
These restrictions apply to the calibration sheet itself. If your printer driver silently scales documents, open its advanced settings and choose the option that preserves the document’s original size. A page that looks correct on screen can still produce an incorrect sensor-to-image relationship if the driver changes its dimensions.
Run Print Then Cut calibration in Design Space
Open the calibration tool
- On a desktop, open Design Space and select Settings.
- Choose Machines, select the Cricut machine you are using, and open Machine Calibration.
- Select Print Then Cut, then follow the prompts.
- On a phone or tablet, open Print Then Cut Settings and choose the calibration option shown for the selected machine.
Calibration is tied to the machine selected in the application. If you own more than one Cricut, verify the model before printing the sheet; calibrating one machine does not correct another.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Print and load the sheet
- Start the calibration flow and let Design Space generate the sheet.
- Print it using the settings above. Do not export the page to another application or alter its scale.
- Place the printed sheet on the mat exactly as the on-screen prompt shows. Many machines use the mat’s top-left corner, but Cricut Venture uses a different placement; do not transfer placement instructions from one model to another.
- Keep the sheet on the mat throughout the assessment. Moving it between the scan and the cut invalidates the comparison.
- Load the mat when Design Space asks and begin the calibration cut.
The page contains lines and a center square. A weeding tool can help lift the small cut square after the machine finishes, but it does not correct an offset.
Answer the center-square test honestly
Inspect the cut around the printed center square. Choose Yes only when the cut touches the printed lines all the way around. If any side has a visible gap or cuts into the printed line, choose No and continue the guided adjustment. A large initial error can require more than one round before the center square is close enough for fine calibration.

Correct a large directional offset
When Design Space asks which line the cut is closest to, use the direction of the error rather than guessing a number:
- A cut that is displaced to the left corresponds to line 21.
- A cut displaced to the right corresponds to line 1.
- A cut displaced downward corresponds to line A.
- A cut displaced upward corresponds to line U.
Repeat the directional choices until the center-square cut touches the printed square. Then complete the fine-calibration stage; stopping after only the large-offset choice leaves the correction unfinished.
Finish and verify
When the fine-calibration screen reports a successful result, run a small, noncritical Print Then Cut test. Use artwork with a clear outside edge and compare the cut on all sides, not just at one corner. If the test is still consistently offset, repeat calibration once with a fresh sheet printed under the original-size settings. If the machine cannot scan the sheet or the error changes unpredictably from one attempt to the next, switch to scan troubleshooting instead of repeatedly changing calibration numbers.
Keep printing and cutting in one Design Space session
Cricut’s Print Then Cut workflow expects the printed registration marks to have the dimensions generated by Design Space. Complete the print and cut in the same session. Exporting the design as a PDF, opening it in another program, and printing from there can change the mark size or page scaling, so the sensor no longer sees the expected geometry.
The reliable sequence is:
- Finish the artwork in Design Space.
- Set the operation to Print Then Cut.
- Click Make and review the mat preview.
- Use Design Space’s Send to Printer command.
- Print without resizing, then return to the same session and load the sheet for cutting.
Check the printer dialog each time. “Fit,” “Fill,” “Scale,” borderless expansion, and similar options can alter the registration-mark size even when the design itself has not changed.

Make layered sticker art cut as one outline
Design Space treats separate printable layers as separate objects unless you combine them. If the goal is one kiss-cut or die-cut outline around a finished sticker, select the artwork and choose Flatten. Flattening converts the visible stack into a single printable layer with one outside cut path. It does not improve sensor accuracy, but it prevents an apparently misaligned result caused by the machine cutting internal layer boundaries that you did not intend to use.
Before printing, inspect the Layers panel and the mat preview. If extra cut lines appear around text, shadows, or individual color layers, return to the canvas and flatten the intended artwork rather than trying to fix those paths through calibration.
Fix registration-mark scanning failures
A machine that cannot read the marks has not reached the stage where calibration can help. Cricut identifies environmental and loading conditions that can interfere with the optical scan.
Control light
Move the machine away from direct sunlight and from a lamp aimed directly at the sensor area. Strong or changing reflections can make the black marks harder to distinguish from the page. Use stable, ordinary room lighting and keep the lid or carriage in the position required by your model.
Remove wrinkles and keep the sheet flat
A wrinkle, lifted corner, or bubble can change the mark’s apparent position. Smooth the printed material onto the mat from one edge to the other. For Explore, Maker, and Joy Xtra machines, Cricut says the material should be smooth, aligned to the grid, and placed in the top-left of the mat’s adhesive area. Follow the model-specific on-screen placement for other machines.

Check the mat and registration area
Use a mat with enough adhesion to hold the page flat, but do not cover or trim away the black registration marks. Align the sheet to the grid instead of centering it by eye. If the page is rotated, shifted, or loaded at an angle, the machine may search in the wrong location even when the marks themselves are printed correctly.
Watch the sensor light
During Print Then Cut calibration or a project, the sensor light should illuminate while the machine scans. If it does not illuminate during calibration, Cricut recommends contacting Member Care. A missing light is a different failure from a page that scans but cuts with an offset, so do not spend time changing material or repeating fine calibration in that situation.
Match sticker material to the machine generation
Sticker paper and printable vinyl differ in color, surface, and reflectivity. Those properties affect the sensor as well as the print quality. Cricut’s compatibility guidance is model-dependent rather than a universal endorsement of one paper.
| Machine situation | Compatibility guidance | Risk to scanning |
|---|---|---|
| Explore Air 2 and older machines | Use non-reflective matte white or transparent material. | Dark, glossy, reflective, or holographic surfaces can prevent reliable mark detection. |
| Newer listed Cricut machines | Some additional materials are supported; check the exact model and material combination. | Compatibility is not automatic for every third-party finish. |
| Any machine using non-Cricut material | Confirm that the sheet is intended for your printer type and has a surface the sensor can read. | Generic glossy or holographic material may scan inconsistently even when the print looks good. |
For a first diagnostic test, use plain white, matte printable sticker paper or printable vinyl that is explicitly compatible with your machine and printer. Once that combination cuts correctly, test specialty finishes separately. Do not assume that a material marketed as printable will also be optically readable by every Cricut generation.

Confirm the print is not being enlarged or cropped
Compare the physical sheet with the Design Space preview. If the printer dialog reports a percentage other than 100 percent, or if it offers “fit to printable area,” cancel and correct the setting. Edge printing and borderless modes can expand the page and move the marks.

Use the printer’s intended media setting
Choose a paper or vinyl setting that matches the stock’s thickness and finish. A setting that applies excessive ink can leave a glossy, wet surface that reflects the sensor; a setting that applies too little ink can produce weak marks. Let the page dry fully before loading it, while keeping the dimensions unchanged.
Inspect the marks before loading
- All black registration marks should be present and sharply printed.
- No tape, laminate edge, sticker, or artwork should cover a mark.
- The page should be flat, uncreased, and attached within the indicated mat area.
- The design should remain inside the printable region shown by Design Space.
A practical recovery sequence
Use this order when a project has already failed:
- Save the design, then identify whether the machine scanned the marks. If it never scanned, skip calibration and begin with lighting, wrinkles, mat placement, and material.
- If it scanned and the cut is uniformly shifted, run Print Then Cut calibration for the selected machine.
- Print the calibration sheet in portrait on white, non-textured copy paper with the original scale and the specified margins.
- Load it according to the model-specific prompt and keep it on the mat while Design Space assesses the cut.
- Use the left/right/up/down line mapping for a large offset, then complete fine calibration.
- Print a small test design through the normal Design Space flow.
- If the test works, return to the sticker material. If it fails only on specialty stock, treat the finish as a compatibility issue rather than changing calibration again.
Common mistakes that create a false alignment diagnosis
Calibrating with a resized sheet
A calibration page printed with “fit to page” teaches the machine the wrong dimensions. Always discard that page and print a new one at the generated size.
Moving the sheet after scanning
Removing and replacing the mat between the scan and cut changes the reference position. Leave it loaded until the assessment is complete.
Using the wrong model’s placement diagram
Top-left placement is common, not universal. Venture’s placement differs, and the correct location is the one shown for the selected machine in Design Space.
Trying to solve a material reflection with calibration
Calibration cannot make a dark, shiny, or holographic surface transparent to the sensor. Test with a compatible matte sheet first.
Printing a PDF from outside Design Space
Another application may alter page dimensions or mark size. Keep the original print-to-cut workflow in one Design Space session.
When the result is accurate enough
For a finished sticker, inspect the entire perimeter. A successful calibration produces a cut that follows the printed edge rather than merely touching it at the center or at one corner. Small visual variations can come from the artwork’s anti-aliased edge or from the material shifting on the mat, so use a clean, high-contrast test design when checking the machine. If a repeatable directional offset remains after a correctly printed calibration and a clean scan, run the calibration flow again; if the sensor light fails or scanning remains impossible, escalate to Cricut support rather than continuing to change settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoosing printable sticker stock for reliable cuts
Choose material by the combination of machine generation, color, reflectivity, pattern, and printer suitability. White or transparent matte stock is the least complicated starting point. Printable vinyl can be useful when you need a more flexible or water-resistant face, but verify that its finish is compatible with the optical sensor and that your printer supports the sheet. There is no single sticker paper that is established as best for every Cricut model. Specialty glossy and holographic products should be treated as model-specific experiments, not universal replacements for matte stock.
