PayPal’s crypto service is not new, and its features are not identical in every country. In the U.S., PayPal’s current terms describe buying, holding, selling, sending and receiving supported crypto, with availability depending on location and account type. PayPal’s U.S. FAQ lists seven supported assets. The key distinctions: PayPal provides the account and transaction interface, while Paxos issues PYUSD; crypto is not a bank deposit; and the price and features you see depend on the transaction and your account.
What PayPal crypto offers in the U.S.
PayPal’s U.S. Cryptocurrency FAQs, accessed September 28, 2026, list these seven supported assets:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- PayPal USD (PYUSD)
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Ethereum (ETH)
- Litecoin (LTC)
- Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
- Solana (SOL)
- Chainlink (LINK)
Under PayPal’s U.S. terms, customers may buy, hold, sell, send and receive supported crypto. Consumer accounts may also be able to convert between PYUSD and another crypto asset. Features can vary by U.S. location and account type, so the list and functions available to another customer may not match what appears in your account.
To use the service, PayPal says you must accept its cryptocurrency terms and keep your account information and identification current. Having a PayPal balance alone does not establish that crypto is available to your account.

Who issues PYUSD—and what a $1 price means
PayPal provides the account interface; Paxos issues PYUSD. PayPal’s U.S. terms, updated May 19, 2026, describe PYUSD as a U.S.-dollar-denominated stablecoin issued by Paxos on Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum and Stellar. A PayPal balance does not identify which of those networks is being used for a particular PYUSD balance; PayPal says Paxos may issue the token on a supported network at its discretion.
PayPal’s terms say PayPal Digital buys or sells PYUSD at $1.00 per token. Eligible holders may also seek direct redemption through Paxos, subject to Paxos’s terms. That price description is not a promise that PYUSD will trade for exactly $1 everywhere, nor a guarantee by PayPal of Paxos’s performance.
PayPal’s terms say Paxos is obligated to fully back PYUSD with an equivalent amount of U.S. dollar bank deposits, U.S. Treasuries and U.S. Treasury reverse repurchase agreements held in custody for PYUSD holders; they say reserve assets do not include money-market funds. These are PayPal’s descriptions of Paxos’s obligations and reserves, not an independent audit. PayPal also says holders are not entitled to earnings on reserve assets.
PYUSD is not legal tender, and a PayPal Crypto Account is not a deposit account. PayPal says crypto holdings, including PYUSD, are not deposits and are not FDIC- or SIPC-insured. A stablecoin balance should not be treated as equivalent to insured cash in a bank account.

What PayPal crypto costs
PayPal’s May 19, 2026 U.S. terms say the exchange rate for covered transactions includes an estimated 1.00% spread when buying or selling crypto other than PYUSD for U.S. dollars, and when converting PYUSD to another crypto asset. The actual spread may be higher or lower depending on market conditions; 1.00% is not a universal fixed fee.
PayPal says it displays the exchange rate and applicable transaction fees before confirmation. Review that quote for the specific transaction rather than assuming the same price applies across assets or at different times. PayPal also notes that linked banks or debit-card issuers may impose their own fees. Its FAQ says crypto prices vary among exchanges and pricing structures can affect the quote.
Where features are available—and what changed
PayPal’s announcements describe separate launches and rollouts, not one worldwide feature set. The dated milestones below help explain why availability claims need a country and date.

Where to manage crypto in the app or on the web
PayPal’s FAQ, accessed September 28, 2026, said that some functions were temporarily available through the web Crypto Hub while the app was being updated. Those functions included creating or managing recurring crypto buys, converting eligible PayPal-listed crypto to or from PYUSD, selling eligible crypto directly to PYUSD, and converting PayPal balance to PYUSD. Existing recurring buys were said to remain unaffected, and PayPal said it would notify customers when app support returned.
That is a dated status, not a guarantee about the app today. Check the current FAQ or your account to see whether a feature is available in the app or only on the web.

PayPal’s terms describe crypto balances as a customer’s recorded interest in pooled, omnibus holdings—not ownership of a specific identifiable token. The same account balance does not tell you which supported blockchain holds a particular PYUSD balance.
Before sending crypto, check that both the asset and network are supported by the destination and by PayPal’s transfer flow. PayPal warns that sending an unsupported crypto asset to a Crypto Account may result in permanent loss. Network fees, timing and availability can vary; transfers are not guaranteed to be instant or uninterrupted.

PayPal says transactions may be delayed, paused or restricted because of network conditions, service-provider issues, account limits, system downtime, legal requirements or other circumstances. Its terms also say users may need to sell or transfer PYUSD to an external digital asset wallet if PayPal ends support for it. Anyone choosing an external wallet should verify that it supports the exact asset and network before transferring.
Risks and protections to understand
- No deposit insurance: PayPal says crypto assets are not insured by the FDIC, SIPC or another public or private insurer, including against cyber theft or theft by other means.
- Market risk: Prices of crypto assets can move, and PYUSD’s stablecoin design does not make it a bank deposit or guarantee its market price everywhere.
- Platform and network risk: Account limits, technical issues, network conditions, legal requirements or service-provider problems may affect access or transactions.
- Issuer risk: Paxos issues PYUSD. PayPal says it does not guarantee Paxos’s performance or obligations.
- Tax and decision responsibility: PayPal says it does not provide investment or tax advice. Its terms leave customers responsible for their decisions and any tax obligations related to buying, selling, converting or transferring crypto.
How to judge whether PayPal is the right way to buy or hold crypto
There is no supported basis here to call PayPal the cheapest or easiest option for every user. Compare the actual service available to you with alternatives on the points that affect your use:
- Availability: Confirm the assets and functions offered in your country and account type.
- Total transaction cost: Compare the displayed quote, spread, transaction fees and any fees from a funding source or network.
- Control and custody: Consider PayPal’s account-based pooled custody and transfer rules against the setup and responsibilities of an external wallet.
- Access and transfers: Check whether the destination supports the exact asset and network, and account for possible transfer limits, delays and network costs.
- Risk and protections: Weigh crypto price exposure and platform, network and issuer risks, including the absence of FDIC and SIPC insurance.
The practical comparison is the quote and transfer route available for your specific transaction—not a general claim that one provider always costs less or works better.
