What changed in PAYDAY 3?
The September 2026 anniversary update changed the value proposition substantially. Starbreeze says all previously separate paid heist DLC became part of the base game at no additional cost and without changing the base price. This applies to heist DLC, not every cosmetic or themed add-on. The studio’s September 23, 2026 announcement describes the change; the Update 3.9 changelog, dated September 21, 2026, says players can now play all the game’s heists.

A fuller set of heists in the base game
For someone buying now or returning after a long break, the clearest advantage is that the previously paid heists are folded into the base game. You can explore that heist catalogue without buying each of those DLC packs separately.

A campaign that connects the heists
Update 3.9 adds story framing around the heists, including context for Shade’s relationship with the gang. That gives the missions a connecting narrative structure; it does not, by itself, establish how compelling the story will be for an individual player.
More tools for experimenting with builds
The anniversary update adds weapon-class perks, makes previously weapon-specific mods shareable, and allows customization of Overkill weapons. A shooting range gives players a place to test configurations. Together, those changes give loadout-focused players more ways to adjust and try builds without treating every weapon setup as fixed.

A continuing update program
Starbreeze says it delivered a substantive update every month in the year leading up to the anniversary. The studio cites Skills 2.0, a heist, reworked heists, onboarding and interface changes, and an Unreal Engine 5.5 upgrade among that work. This is the developer’s account of its update cadence and scope, not a guarantee about future release frequency.
PAYDAY 3 cons and caveats
It is designed around co-op
Steam describes PAYDAY 3 as a one-to-four-player co-op FPS. That makes coordinated play with friends or other players a central part of its pitch. The available source information does not establish current offline or solo functionality well enough to promise that the game suits someone who wants a wholly solo or offline experience. Check the current requirements for your platform before buying. Steam’s PAYDAY 3 listing also identifies a Starbreeze Nebula third-party account requirement; confirm whether that requirement applies to your chosen platform and current version.

Not every addition is included
Free inclusion of the earlier heist DLC does not mean every new content pack is free. Starbreeze announced the Brute Force Crimebond for $9.99 in September 2026 as a separate themed content pack. That is the announced price at that time, not a guarantee of the current price; check your store listing before purchase.
Some problems were still on the official issue list
The Update 3.9 changelog lists issues including outdated objectives or subtitles in Boys in Blue, Fear & Greed, and Syntax Error; an interaction between a Haymaker perk and the Hidden Blade skill that can consume a throwing knife without killing the enemy; and unclear descriptions of equipped and persistent weapon perks. It also lists interface and customization bugs. This is a dated developer list, not a complete independent bug audit, and later 3.9.1 or 3.9.2 hotfixes may have changed individual issues. The official changelog links those hotfixes.

Mods may stop working after updates
The official changelog warns that updates can be incompatible with installed mods and recommends removing mods when troubleshooting. If a problem appears after an update, test the game without mods before assuming the base game itself is the cause.

What the player-base and review figures do—and do not—show
Starbreeze reported that PAYDAY 3’s player base jumped “three times over” when the anniversary update went live, without specifying the measurement method or baseline. The company also said Steam reviews passed 72 percent positive in summer 2026 and had held there. These are studio-reported, dated signals—not a live player count or an independently verified current rating. Starbreeze’s separate figures of more than 500 million players and over $400 million in lifetime gross revenue refer to the PAYDAY franchise across PC, console, and user-generated-content platforms, not PAYDAY 3 alone.
