Start with the Patagonia size chart for the garment category you’re considering, measure your body, then check the exact jacket’s fit description before choosing a size. Patagonia’s charts use body measurements—not finished-jacket measurements—so your planned layers and the model’s intended fit matter too.
1. Open the size guide for the jacket category
Begin with Patagonia’s Size & Fit Guide. Patagonia provides separate sizing guidance for men’s, women’s and gender-inclusive garments, as well as links to other category guides. Use the chart that matches the jacket’s listed category rather than assuming one chart applies to all jackets.

For a gender-inclusive jacket, use Patagonia’s gender-inclusive size chart. If you are considering a men’s or women’s model, consult the corresponding guide: men’s size and fit or women’s size and fit.

Use a flexible body-measuring tape and follow the directions on the relevant chart. Patagonia’s U.S. men’s and women’s tops guides give these instructions for two key measurements:

- Chest or bust: Relax your arms and measure around the fullest part of your chest or bust.
- Arm length: Bend your elbow. Measure from the center back of your neck, over your shoulder, to your elbow and down to your wrist.
The chart values are body measurements. They are not measurements of the jacket laid flat or its finished dimensions, so don’t compare them directly with a garment you own as though they were the same kind of measurement.
3. Use the chart’s guidance when measurements differ
On Patagonia’s U.S. men’s and women’s tops guides, chest is described as usually the best predictor of size. Both guides also advise considering the size indicated by your hip measurement if your hips measure larger. Apply that advice to those charts; it is not a universal rule for every garment category or jacket design.

Compare your measurements with the chart’s entries, including arm length where listed. If you sit between sizes or your measurements point to different sizes, use the fit you want and the specific jacket’s description to make the final call rather than treating one measurement as a guarantee.

These labels explain intended shape; they do not guarantee that the same size will feel identical across different jacket models. Think about what you will wear underneath: a thin baselayer, a light midlayer or heavier layers can change how much room you need.
As regional guidance, Patagonia’s European men’s fit guide says technical slim-fit garments may be worn over baselayers and light midlayers, while technical regular-fit garments may be worn over heavier midlayers. Treat that as general guidance for the described technical fits, not a promise about every jacket or market.

5. Check the exact jacket before deciding whether to size up
There is no reliable universal rule to size up in a Patagonia jacket. The general size guide cannot determine how an unspecified model fits. Open the product page for the jacket you want and check its current fit label and model-specific details; use those alongside your chart measurements and intended layers.
Patagonia’s sizing pages put the approach succinctly: “Measure twice, buy once and wear for a lifetime.”
