How to Set Up and Position a Thermacell LIV 2.0 for Better Coverage

A practical LIV 2.0 installation guide covering repeller spacing, hub requirements, mounting clearance, cable layout, system testing and app setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the best layout, place Thermacell LIV 2.0 repellers around the outdoor areas people actually use: keep each unit within 10 feet of seating or gathering spots, space units no more than 20 feet apart, and leave at least 18 inches of clearance from plants, walls, and other obstructions. Before mounting anything, choose a hub location that meets the power, Wi-Fi, mounting-height, and cable-routing requirements.

This is a setup guide based on Thermacell’s manufacturer instructions, not an independent test of mosquito-repellent performance.

Plan the layout around the places people use

Start by marking the deck, patio, outdoor kitchen, play area, firepit, or other defined gathering spaces you want to protect. Plan the repellers around those areas rather than simply tracing the property boundary. Thermacell recommends placing repellers within 10 feet of seating and gathering spots and no more than 20 feet apart. Its support FAQ describes a 10-foot radius and a minimum 315-square-foot zone per repeller; those are manufacturer-stated figures, not a promise of uniform protection in every yard.

Before you settle on positions, account for the hub, available cable lengths, safe cable routes, mounting surfaces, and obstructions such as walls and dense plants. LIV 2.0 supports up to 10 repellers and four branches. Repellers extend outward from the hub: the run cannot split in multiple directions without the supported branch arrangement, and it must not loop back to complete a circuit.

  1. Mark the seating and gathering areas you want covered.
  2. Set proposed repeller positions near those areas, keeping them within 10 feet of seating and no more than 20 feet apart.
  3. Check each position for the required clearance from obstructions and water.
  4. Measure the route from the hub to the first repeller and between units. Confirm the planned runs fit the system’s cable and branch constraints before drilling or mounting.

How much area does LIV 2.0 cover?

Thermacell’s published maximum-area figures are not consistent. Its LIV 2.0 product page says up to 3,000 square feet per hub. The June 2, 2026 launch announcement and LIV systems overview say 3,140 square feet with 10 repellers. The support FAQ’s stated minimum of 315 square feet per repeller would total 3,150 square feet for 10 units. Thermacell does not reconcile these figures in the reviewed pages, so use the placement guidance for your actual seating areas rather than treating any total as an independently verified result.

Choose a suitable hub location

The hub needs a 120V GFCI outdoor outlet within six feet and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi coverage for app setup and connected features. Mount it vertically, with its mounting point at least 30 inches above ground to reduce exposure to water and snow. Secure the mounting plate level, seat the power cable fully, and route cables downward or otherwise protect them from the elements. Keep the hub unplugged while connecting or disconnecting repellers and until you are ready to test the system.

Thermacell says the app is optional for basic repellency. Wi-Fi and the LIV+ 2 app are needed for schedules, timers, notifications, refill-life monitoring, shared access, and firmware updates. The app supports 2.4 GHz networks, not 5 GHz-only setup.

Mount the repellers low and clear

Thermacell’s support guidance says to mount each repeller 2–4 inches above the ground and at least 18 inches from plants, walls, and other obstructions. Its FAQ recommends keeping units at least 10 feet from water. The FAQ also says there are no water restrictions on the product label; the 10-foot distance is a placement recommendation, not a label restriction.

Choose the mount for the surface and avoid placing a unit where foliage, a wall, or another object blocks the surrounding area.

  • Wood deck or railing: use the mounting option intended for wood surfaces.
  • Lawn or garden bed: use a ground stake. Push it in by hand; Thermacell says not to use a hammer or mallet.
  • Stone or pavers: use a hardscape base if you do not want to drill into the surface.
  • Vertical surface: use the side-mount option.

Connect the cables and test before securing them

Make all cable connections with the hub unplugged. Begin at the hub with the supplied cable, then connect each repeller to the preceding unit. Do not bury cables during the initial test. Put the terminator on the final repeller at the end of the longest chain. On shorter branches using a splitter, Thermacell’s LIV 2.0 notes say to leave the screw caps on the last repeller’s unused female pigtail.

  1. With the hub unplugged, connect the hub, repellers, any supported splitter, and terminator according to the planned runs.
  2. Plug in the hub and press its center power button. The hub ring should illuminate and the repellers should display a chasing amber pattern.
  3. Wait about 15 minutes. Thermacell says the repeller lights should then turn solid blue.
  4. If no repeller lights appear, check the connections. Once the expected sequence is confirmed, turn the system off before completing the installation.
  5. Secure and route the cables to protect them from damage and reduce tripping hazards. Choose fastening hardware suited to the mounting surface and outdoor exposure; Thermacell does not name or approve a specific third-party cable clip in the reviewed instructions.

Connect the LIV+ 2 app and read system status

For app access, install LIV+ 2, register, add a system, and choose Wi-Fi setup. Scan the hub’s QR code, select a 2.4 GHz network, enter its password, and wait for setup to finish. If you skip Wi-Fi, Thermacell says basic repellency remains available, but the system cannot receive firmware updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The support page describes system states as Off, Warming, and Protected. On LIV 2.0, an orange flash alongside the operating color indicates a cap obstruction: remove the obstruction and move the cap closed. After power-off, the repellers show a blue chase while the heater cools; the cap closes when cool-down is complete.
