Password strength checkers estimate how guessable a password may be; their crack-time displays are conditional scenarios, not promises about how long a real attack will take. Use the score as feedback, then protect accounts with unique passwords, a password manager, and stronger sign-in options where available.
How strong is my password?
A checker can flag patterns that make a password easier to guess, such as common words, names, dates, repeated characters, keyboard walks, sequences, or predictable substitutions. Some estimators use those patterns and common-password data to approximate how many guesses an attacker might need.

That is an estimate of guessability—not a certainty score. NIST cautions that “estimating entropy for user-chosen passwords is challenging.” In its guidance, length is a primary consideration: “The most important part of a good password is its length.” A score based on character types or entropy arithmetic should not be mistaken for a precise measurement of a password chosen by a person.
How long would it take to crack my password?
A displayed time converts an estimated number of guesses into a hypothetical duration using an assumed attack rate. The answer depends on the attack path, the password-hash type and work factor, rate limits, and the attacker’s computing resources.

Dropbox’s zxcvbn documentation labels its outputs as back-of-the-envelope estimates and distinguishes several scenarios: rate-limited online attacks, unthrottled online attacks, offline attacks against slow hashes, and offline attacks against fast hashes. Those are different conditions, so the same password can have very different displayed times. A “centuries” result is meaningful only in the context of the scenario and assumptions shown; it is not an independently measured result or a guarantee.
Are password strength checkers accurate?
They can give useful relative feedback about common patterns and likely guessability, but no single crack-time number establishes how long a real attacker will need. There is no current head-to-head accuracy figure here that supports saying consumer checkers are accurate to a particular percentage. The 2016 USENIX Security paper on zxcvbn is foundational research on that estimator, not a current comparative benchmark for all password tools.

- Auto-Fill Feature: Say goodbye to the hassle of manually entering passwords! PasswordPocket automatically fills in your credentials with just a single click.
- Internet-Free Data Protection: Use Bluetooth as the communication medium with your device. Eliminating the need to access the internet and reducing the risk of unauthorized access.
- Military-Grade Encryption: Utilizes advanced encryption techniques to safeguard your sensitive information, providing you with enhanced privacy and security.
- Offline Account Management: Store up to 1,000 sets of account credentials in PasswordPocket.
- Support for Multiple Platforms: PasswordPocket works seamlessly across multiple platforms, including iOS and Android mobile phones and tablets.
A checker also cannot determine whether you reused a password, whether the credential has appeared in a breach, whether a login page is a phishing site, or whether malware is recording keystrokes. OWASP notes that many attacks are not stopped by password length or complexity alone. Account security also depends on protections beyond the password itself.
Why do password checkers give different results?
Tools may use different pattern dictionaries, assumptions, and attack rates. One may account for common words, names, dates, repeated characters, keyboard patterns, or substitutions differently from another. A displayed time may also be based on a different online or offline attack scenario, with different throttling and hash assumptions.

- NEVER FORGET A PASSWORD AGAIN: Almost every App. has a password, it is almost impossible to remember all the password log in details. This password book is specifically designed to help you create secure passwords and store all your passwords safely in one place. You will never forget your password log-in details again with this password keeper.
- ALPHABETICAL A-Z TABS FOR QUICK ACCESS: Alphabetical tabs design allows you to store your passwords alphabetically so you can find what you want faster, no more annoying searches!
- ANONYMOUS WITHOUT ANY TITLE: On the outside, this password notebook organizer looks just like those writing journals, there is no title listed on the cover, so no one would know it's a password book. But we still recommend keeping the internet password logbook in a safe place such as a locked drawer or a shelf full of books.
- THICK NO-BLEED PAPER: This 5.2" x 7.6" password book contains 74 sheets of thick 120gsm paper that resists ink smearing, say goodbye to those cheap password books that bleed ink!
- PREMIUM QUALITY & PERFECT MEDIUM SIZE: This password journal comes with a high-quality leatherette hardcover, an elastic band, pen holder, ribbon bookmarker, and inner accordion pocket. It measures 5.2 inches wide and 7.6 inches long, which is the perfect size for your needs.
When comparing estimators, look for the scenario they describe, the patterns they recognize, and whether their advice is practical. Feedback that identifies a predictable pattern is more useful than rules that encourage arbitrary symbol substitutions or character-class tricks. Dropbox’s zxcvbn documentation describes that library’s implementation; other checkers may use different approaches.
What should I do if a checker says my password is weak?
- Use a unique password for the account. Reuse allows a password exposed on one service to put other accounts at risk; a high meter score does not fix reuse.
- Favor length over predictable complexity. Avoid relying on substitutions such as changing a letter to a similar-looking symbol as a shortcut to strength.
- Use a password manager. NIST recommends password managers for password-based accounts because they can generate and store long, unique passwords. Choose one that supports multifactor authentication (MFA).
- Turn on MFA or use a passkey where the service supports it. These options add protection beyond a password and do not depend on a checker’s crack-time estimate.
- Use checker sites cautiously. Do not enter a real password into an unfamiliar third-party checker unless you have verified how it handles submitted passwords.
What does NIST say about password length?
NIST’s current Digital Identity Guidelines, SP 800-63B Revision 4, treat requirements in the context of the authenticator and assurance level rather than as a universal consumer score. The implementation FAQ summarizes a 15-character minimum for passwords used as a single authentication factor at AAL1. That is a context-specific requirement, not a claim that every password must follow one universal rule or that meeting it guarantees security.
