A regular expression can find a number in a bank alert; it cannot, by itself, establish that the number is the transaction amount, that the message describes a completed transaction, or that the currency and debit-or-credit direction are known. Reliable SMS transaction parsing therefore combines pattern matching with classification, field validation, explicit uncertainty, and ongoing quality checks.
Why a regex match is not a transaction record
SMS bodies are human-readable text, not guaranteed transaction records. A message might be a transaction notification, an OTP, a promotion, a balance notice, or something unrelated. Even within a transaction alert, a number may represent the amount, a balance, a fee, a reference, or masked account digits.

A regex identifies text that fits a pattern. It does not prove what that text means. Microsoft’s Exact Data Match guidance illustrates a boundary problem: a pattern intended to match six digits can also match a six-digit segment inside a longer number. In transaction parsing, similar mistakes can turn a reference or account fragment into a plausible-looking amount.

Build a pipeline around the meaning of the message
1. Preserve input context and classify the message
Keep the sender identifier, body, timestamp, and available encoding or segmentation metadata needed to interpret the message. Classify it before treating it as a transaction. An SMS information-extraction study describes a layered approach in which classification precedes entity extraction; that is an architectural example, not evidence that any one technique is always superior. 2. Route by sender and message shape
When sender identifiers are available and trustworthy for routing, use them as context, then check the body against known templates or message anchors. Do not treat a sender label alone as authentication unless a separate mechanism verifies it. Keep the selected route and template identity with the parse result so that failures can be traced to a source family.

The sms-transaction-parser project offers an implementation example: it documents sender-directory routing, template anchors and revisions, fallback handling, and distinct outcomes such as NO_ROUTE, NO_MATCH, and INCOMPLETE. This demonstrates a design approach; it is not an independent accuracy evaluation.
3. Extract candidates, then validate field semantics
Extract only fields the message supports. A useful candidate set may include amount, currency, direction, merchant or counterparty, transaction date, reference, balance, and fee. Validate each value against its role in the message: check numeric boundaries and formats, ensure labels and wording support the proposed direction, and do not confuse an amount with a balance or fee.

Currency deserves its own explicit state. If the message does not name a currency, preserve it as unknown rather than silently inferring one from a locale, sender, or device setting. If amounts are stored as integers, apply the relevant currency’s minor-unit rules; the cited parser documents this as its own design choice, not a universal SMS standard.
4. Represent uncertainty instead of manufacturing certainty
Distinguish a message that has no applicable route from one that resembles a known template but fails to match, and from one that matches but lacks a required field. Mark low-confidence results for review rather than allowing them to affect financial totals automatically. An explicit status and validation-error list make uncertainty visible to downstream systems and users.

5. Maintain fixtures and monitor quality over time
Keep representative, privacy-safe test fixtures for sender formats, locales, currencies, dates, abbreviations, punctuation, encodings, and changed templates. Track completeness, field validity, false positives, false negatives, and parse failures by source and parser or template version. Assign ownership for recurring source-data problems and remediate them rather than repeatedly patching symptoms.
The Central Bank of the UAE’s section 2.3 data-identification and management rulebook says regulated financial institutions should document data sources, establish data-quality standards, test and validate data at risk-based intervals, and remediate quality and completeness issues in a timely manner. That guidance applies in its regulated context; it is a useful governance model, not a universal legal requirement for every SMS parser.

Design a record that can be checked and changed
Ad hoc SMS text is not itself an ISO 20022 message. ISO 20022 describes a methodical approach to consistent financial-services message definitions and precise descriptions of externally observable message aspects. Its concepts offer a useful contrast: convert free text into a documented internal record with explicit field definitions and validation rules, without claiming that the incoming alert conforms to ISO 20022. See ISO 20022-1:2026.
Depending on the application’s reporting and privacy needs, a record can distinguish:
- Source metadata needed for interpretation, such as sender, timestamp, and encoding or segmentation details.
- Parsed values, including which fields were explicitly stated and which, if any, were inferred.
- Parser and template versions, plus a confidence or review state.
- Validation errors and missing required fields.
- The original text, only where retention is justified and governed by the application’s privacy requirements.
Encoding and message boundaries are ingestion concerns
SMS processing must account for character encoding and, where applicable, concatenated message segments. RFC 5724 notes that SMS uses character-based message formats in different character implementations and that applications in a character-processing chain must correctly map character sets. In the RFC’s relevant SMS context, the figures are 160 characters for 7-bit GSM content, 70 characters for UCS-2 content, and an associated 140-octet message-size limit. These are protocol-context figures, not universal length guarantees for every device, network, concatenation scheme, or application interface. See RFC 5724.

Preserve the source text and relevant metadata needed to diagnose such failures, subject to defined access, retention, and privacy controls.
What to evaluate when choosing a parser design

What performance claims the evidence supports
There is no universal SMS transaction-parser accuracy figure established here. The public parser repositories are implementation examples, not benchmark studies, and the classification paper does not establish that machine learning is always better than rules. Evaluate a parser against representative, privacy-safe fixtures from the specific senders and message formats it must handle, and report the tested scope and conditions rather than presenting a general accuracy claim.
