It means the thermostat is not detecting power at its Rc terminal; it does not, by itself, identify which part of your heating or cooling system is at fault. Start with the system’s power supply, then check accessible thermostat wiring only after switching the system off.
What the Rc power alert means
On Nest thermostats, Google lists E3, E23, and E73 as “No power to Rc wire detected.” The message reports what the thermostat detects at a wiring terminal, not a confirmed diagnosis of a failed wire, thermostat, or HVAC component. Check the system’s power first
A thermostat cannot detect the expected power if the heating or cooling equipment has lost power. Check the relevant breaker or fuse, and look for a system switch near the HVAC equipment. Some homes have separate power switches for heating and cooling, so check the switch for the equipment that is not working. If a breaker trips again or the equipment does not operate normally, stop troubleshooting and contact an HVAC professional.
Inspect thermostat wiring safely
- Turn off HVAC power. Use the appropriate breaker, fuse, or system switch before exposing or touching thermostat wiring.
- Check only accessible thermostat connections. Confirm that each wire is fully inserted into its intended terminal. Do not move wires while the system is energized.
- Stop if the system board needs attention. Checking connections at the equipment may be necessary, but only proceed if you can do so safely and follow the equipment instructions. If access or wiring identification is uncertain, leave it to a professional.
- Restore power and check the thermostat. If the alert remains or the HVAC system still does not work normally, contact a local HVAC professional.
Could the issue involve a C wire?
Google notes that some Nest help-code situations can involve a C wire that is not providing enough power, or a thermostat that needs a C wire or Nest Power Connector for dedicated power. That is a possible low-power condition, not a universal explanation or fix for every Rc alert.

Whether a C wire can be used depends on the thermostat and the home’s wiring. A spare conductor may be usable in some installations, but system-side wiring changes require care. Check Google’s model-specific wiring guidance before changing anything. The Nest Power Connector is another possible option only if it is compatible with your thermostat and HVAC setup; it is not a guaranteed remedy for an Rc alert.
When to call an HVAC professional
Get professional help if the power and accessible thermostat connections check out but the code remains, if the HVAC equipment is not operating normally, or if resolving the issue requires access to system wiring. Google cautions that HVAC equipment can involve high voltage and components that store a charge. Do not open or service equipment unless you are qualified to do so.
