Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →paq is a command-line utility and Rust crate that recursively hashes files or directories with BLAKE3. Its directory hash is designed to be deterministic, but it is a content-focused fingerprint—not a complete record of filesystem state. The documented paq 1.4.1 behavior excludes most metadata, and its instructions should not be assumed to describe paq 2.0.0, which appeared on 2026-09-26.
What paq hashes—and how a directory hash is made
The paq 1.4.1 crate documentation describes the tool as able to “Hash file or directory recursively.” For a file, paq hashes its content. For a directory, it discovers paths recursively and processes content hashes in a parallel pipeline. It then sorts the intermediate hashes before hashing the ordered list to produce the final directory value. Sorting makes the result independent of the order in which parallel work finishes.

The documented command-line interface accepts a source file or directory and writes the result as valid JSON in a .paq file. A Rust library interface is also documented. These details are specific to the paq 1.4.1 documentation.
What the resulting hash represents—and what it leaves out
paq is useful when you need a repeatable, content-oriented fingerprint according to its own hashing rules. The project overview identifies integrity checking, detecting changes, comparing directory states, and automated workflows as possible uses. A matching hash should not be treated as proof that every property of two filesystem trees is identical.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
In the documented 1.4.1 behavior, the hash does not encode these filesystem properties:
- File modes or permissions
- Ownership
- Modification or access times
- Access-control lists (ACLs)
- Extended attributes
- Hard-link relationships
For example, changing a file’s permissions without changing its content does not change the properties paq says it hashes. If permissions, ownership, timestamps, ACLs, extended attributes, or hard-link relationships matter to your comparison, capture them separately or choose a tool that records them.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
How paq treats symbolic links and hidden paths
The 1.4.1 documentation says paq hashes a symbolic link’s target path, not the contents found at that target. A link’s fingerprint therefore does not serve as a fingerprint of the linked-to file’s contents.

Hidden files or directories can optionally be ignored. That choice affects which paths contribute to the result: enabling or disabling the option can change the hash. When comparing results, use the same hidden-path setting and confirm the behavior of the paq version you are running.

When paq is a good fit
- Content-oriented integrity checks: use the hash to check for content changes under paq’s rules.
- Directory-state comparisons: compare repeatable directory fingerprints when metadata and link-target contents are outside the comparison you need.
- Automation: the documented JSON output can be used in workflows that consume the generated
.paqfile. - Not a full filesystem snapshot: do not use the hash alone when you need to preserve or verify the excluded metadata or symbolic-link target contents.
BLAKE3 is fast, but it is not for passwords
BLAKE3 is a cryptographic hash designed for fast parallel processing. Its default output size is 256 bits, and the project documents optimized implementations as well as the b3sum command-line utility. See the official BLAKE3 project for algorithm details.
The BLAKE3 README explicitly warns: “BLAKE3 is not a password hashing algorithm, because it’s designed to be fast, whereas password hashing should not be fast.” It recommends Argon2 for password storage or deriving keys from passwords. paq and BLAKE3 are therefore not appropriate tools for storing passwords.

Version and installation notes
The available paq instructions cited here are for version 1.4.1, released on 2025-12-29. That documentation lists prebuilt binaries for Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu, installation with cargo install paq, Nix flakes, and a Python package called paqpy. It documents running paq [src] to hash a file or directory.
