Apple’s Eye Tracking accessibility feature lets you move an onscreen pointer by looking at items on your iPhone, then select one by holding your gaze steady until the dwell timer finishes. It uses the iPhone’s built-in front-facing camera, so no separate eye-tracking accessory is required. Setup is in Settings > Accessibility > Eye Tracking, and Apple says the data used to set up and control it is processed on device.
Turn on Eye Tracking and calibrate it
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Eye Tracking and turn on Eye Tracking.
- Follow the dot around the screen with your eyes to complete calibration. Apple says calibration is required each time you turn the feature on.
For setup, Apple recommends keeping the front-facing camera’s view of your face clear, lighting your face adequately, and placing the iPhone on a stable surface about a foot and a half away. A stand may help keep the phone steady, but Apple does not require one.

Move the pointer and select items
After calibration, an outline appears around the screen item you are looking at by default. Eye Tracking follows your gaze; holding your eyes on an item can trigger a dwell action, with a tap as the default.
With Snap to Item off, the dwell pointer appears where you are looking and a timer starts. Keep your gaze there until the timer finishes to perform the tap. Apple’s guide explains how to use the feature in its Eye Tracking instructions.

AssistiveTouch provides access to additional gestures and physical button actions. This can extend what you can do beyond selecting items with a dwell tap.

What to expect if tracking becomes unreliable
Eye Tracking depends on the camera having a clear view of your face and on adequate face lighting. If the face or iPhone position changes, Apple notes that recalibration may start automatically when recalibration is needed. Recheck the phone’s position and camera view, and complete calibration when prompted.

Eye Tracking is one option among Apple’s mobility accessibility features, not a universal best choice. Depending on what works for you, alternatives or complements include Head Tracking, Voice Control, Siri, assistive devices, and external keyboards. Apple describes these options in its guides to mobility accessibility features and getting started with iPhone accessibility.
