Choose a directly addressed dedicated server if everyone can connect with an IP address and port and you do not need list discovery. The important detail is that these are not two fundamentally different hosting architectures: Pocketpair describes a community server as a dedicated server registered on the game’s server list.
Community server vs. dedicated server at a glance
Both options run the world outside a player’s normal game client. The practical difference is how the server is published and how players reach it.

| Decision point | Dedicated server without list registration | Community server |
|---|---|---|
| World hosting | Runs independently of the host’s game client. | The same dedicated-server model, with list registration enabled. |
| Primary way to join | Players enter the server’s IP address and UDP port. | Players locate and select it in Palworld’s in-game community-server list. |
| Xbox or PS5 access | Not the deployment route specified by Pocketpair for those versions. | Pocketpair’s guide says Xbox and PS5 players require community-server deployment. |
| Best for | Private groups that can share a stable address and want direct control. | Mixed-platform groups or anyone who wants searchable in-game discovery. |
| Router and firewall work | Required when self-hosting: forward the game port and permit it through the host firewall. | Still required for a self-hosted machine; list registration does not remove network administration. |
| Administration skill | Suitable for people comfortable with operating-system updates, firewall rules and backups. | Requires the same server administration, plus list-registration settings and name management. |
| Managed hosting | Can be supplied by a managed provider if you do not want to maintain a machine. | Can also be supplied by a managed provider; confirm that community-list registration and your target platforms are supported. |
What “dedicated” and “community” mean in Palworld
Dedicated means the world is not tied to a playing client
Pocketpair’s v0.5.0 server documentation defines a dedicated server as “a method used to host a server without hosting the world from the game client.” In practical terms, the server process owns the world continuously. The person who installed it does not have to keep Palworld open, and players are not dependent on one player acting as the session host.
This arrangement is useful when people play at different times. You can leave the server process running on a computer or hosted machine, then let authorized players connect whenever it is online. It also gives you a single place to keep the save data, configuration and logs.

Community means a dedicated server registered in the list
A community server is not a separate game mode or a second kind of world. Pocketpair describes it as “a dedicated server that has registered a dedicated server on the server list in the game client.” Registration changes discovery: players can look for the server by its listed name instead of being given an address and port.
Because the underlying server is still dedicated, CPU, memory, storage, updates, backups and firewall work remain relevant. Registering the server does not turn a home computer into a managed service; you or your hosting provider still operate the machine.
How players connect
Direct-address dedicated server
With an unlisted dedicated server, give players the public IP address (or hostname, if you have configured one) and the server’s UDP port. Pocketpair lists UDP port 8211 as the default. Players use the game’s direct connection workflow and enter the address in the format supported by their game client.

It avoids relying on a public list, but every player must receive the correct address, port and any password or access information you have configured.
Community-server discovery
For a community deployment, the server is registered so that it appears in Palworld’s in-game server list. Players search for the listing and select it. Discovery is easier for a group that includes console users or for a server whose audience should not have to copy an address manually.
List visibility is not the same as universal access. The machine must still be reachable, the process must be running, the firewall must allow the game traffic and the server must be configured for the platform combination you intend to support.

Xbox, PS5 and cross-play status
Pocketpair’s v0.5.0 “About server” guide says that joining from the Xbox version or the PS5 version requires deploying the server as a community server. If either console is part of your group, use community deployment as the starting requirement rather than planning an IP-only server.

The same guide lists cross-play as enabled by default for Steam, Xbox Series/Microsoft Store Windows PC and macOS. It states on that page that PS5 cross-play is currently unavailable. This is a versioned platform statement, not a permanent guarantee: check the current Pocketpair documentation before opening a new server, especially if your group depends on PS5 access.
| Player platform | What the v0.5.0 guide says | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Included in the default cross-play list. | Can be part of a cross-play group when the other platform and server settings also meet the guide’s requirements. |
| Xbox Series | Included in the default cross-play list. | Use community deployment if Xbox players need to join the server. |
| Microsoft Store Windows PC | Included in the default cross-play list. | Plan alongside the Xbox platform rules rather than assuming it behaves identically to Steam. |
| macOS | Included in the default cross-play list. | Can participate in the listed cross-play combination under the documented version. |
| PS5 | The guide says cross-play is currently unavailable. | Do not promise PS5 cross-play without checking a newer official update. |
Do you need a dedicated server for more than four players?
A dedicated server is valuable when you want the world to remain available without one player hosting from the game client, regardless of the exact group size. It removes the host-client dependency and centralizes the save.
However, the current Pocketpair material used for this comparison does not state a universal player-count maximum or a rule that four players is the limit for a particular hosting mode. Do not use an uncited “32-player” figure or assume that crossing four players automatically requires a dedicated server. Instead, check the current game version, the server settings and the capacity offered by the machine or managed host you intend to use.
If your only goal is to let more friends join occasionally, first verify the limits of your chosen game mode. If your goal is 24-hour availability, independent join times, console access or a persistent shared save, the dedicated architecture is the relevant decision even before player count becomes an issue.
Self-hosting requirements
Hardware baseline
Pocketpair’s v0.5.0 requirements page recommends a four-core CPU and lists 16 GB of memory. It says that 8 GB is bootable but increases the possibility of server crashes caused by running out of memory. Treat 16 GB as the practical target for a dependable installation, not as a promise of a particular player capacity.

| Component | Documented guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Four cores recommended. | Leaves processing headroom for the server process and the operating system. |
| RAM | 16 GB listed; 8 GB can boot but is more prone to out-of-memory crashes. | Insufficient memory can stop the process and interrupt access to the world. |
| Storage | Use faster storage; Pocketpair warns that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data. | Save reliability is a data-integrity issue, not merely a loading-speed preference. |
| Capacity planning | No universal player-count figure is stated in the cited comparison material. | Validate the current game version and your intended settings instead of relying on an old maximum. |
Why an SSD matters
Use a fast SSD, with a 1 TB NVMe SSD being a sensible capacity category when you are buying a dedicated system and need room for the operating system, server files, saves, logs and backups. The important documented point is performance: Pocketpair warns that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data. Keep backups on a separate device or location so a failing system drive does not become the only copy of the world.
Network, port and firewall requirements
The default game port is UDP 8211. A self-hosted server normally needs three matching permissions:
- The server process must listen on the configured UDP port.
- The operating-system firewall must allow inbound UDP traffic to that port.
- Your router must forward UDP 8211 from the public interface to the server machine’s private address.
If you change the port, use the new value consistently in the server configuration, router rule, firewall rule and the address you give players. Reserve a stable local address for the server so a router restart does not send the forwarding rule to a different device. Keep the public address private to your intended group unless you deliberately want a public listing.
Setup route 1: Windows through Steam
Pocketpair describes installing the Palworld Dedicated Server through Steam as the easiest documented route for people without game-server experience. The labels in Steam can change, but the process is broadly:
- Install the item named Palworld Dedicated Server through the Steam client on the Windows machine that will host the world.
- Start the server with
PalServer.exe. - Allow the executable through Windows Firewall when prompted, and create an inbound UDP rule for the configured game port if the prompt does not create one.
- Sign in to your router, forward UDP port 8211 (or your changed port) to the host computer’s stable local IP address, and save the rule.
- Start the server and confirm that the process remains running instead of opening and closing immediately.
- For a direct server, give players the public IP address and port. For a community server, complete the current registration settings so the listing appears in the in-game browser.
- Have one player test from outside your home network. A test from the same LAN can succeed even when the router’s public forwarding is wrong.
Windows is the most approachable route when you want a graphical installation and are comfortable maintaining a single always-on PC. It is still a real server: sleep mode, automatic reboots, Windows updates and firewall changes can interrupt availability.
Setup route 2: SteamCMD on Windows or Linux
SteamCMD is the command-line installation route. Pocketpair identifies the Palworld Dedicated Server application as app ID 2394010. Use SteamCMD to download or update that application, then launch the platform-specific server executable.

Windows with SteamCMD
- Install SteamCMD and choose a dedicated-server directory with enough free space for the application, saves and backups.
- Use SteamCMD’s application-install workflow with app ID
2394010. - Run
PalServer.exefrom the downloaded server directory. - Apply the Windows Firewall and router-forwarding rules for UDP 8211, or the custom port you selected.
- Set up a repeatable start method so the process can be restarted after maintenance or a reboot.
Linux with SteamCMD
- Install SteamCMD and download app ID
2394010into a dedicated server directory. - Use the Linux server launcher,
PalServer.sh, from that directory. - Allow the game’s UDP port in the Linux firewall and forward the same port on the router.
- Run the process under a service or other supervised session so it can restart after a failure and start after a reboot.
- Schedule save backups and monitor available memory, because the 8 GB bootable configuration has a higher out-of-memory crash risk.
Pocketpair notes that Linux requires some Linux knowledge. Choose it when you already understand package updates, permissions, firewall tooling, service management and storage monitoring; otherwise, Windows Steam is less demanding.

Pocketpair documents an official Docker image for advanced users. Containers can make updates and repeatable deployments easier, but they do not remove the underlying responsibilities. Map the game’s UDP port, persist the save directory outside the disposable container layer, provide enough memory and storage, and ensure the host firewall and router still permit traffic.
Use Docker when you are already comfortable with images, volumes, port mappings, logs and container restarts. A container that is recreated without a persistent save volume can make the world appear to have vanished, so verify the save path before inviting players.
Registering a server as a community server
Community status depends on registering the dedicated server with Palworld’s in-game server list. The exact fields and labels can change with game updates, so follow the current Pocketpair instructions for the version you are running.
- Decide on a distinctive server name that players can search reliably.
- Configure the server for the platforms you intend to support, paying attention to the current cross-play rules.
- Keep the server reachable on its configured UDP port; a listing cannot compensate for a blocked port.
- Test the listing from a player account that is not on the hosting machine.
- Document the direct address as a fallback for administrators, even when normal players use the list.
If the server is intended only for a private group, avoid assuming that list visibility provides access control. Use the game’s available password or administrative controls and share credentials only with the people who should join.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAdministration and reliability trade-offs
| Operational task | What you must handle when self-hosting | What a managed provider may handle |
|---|---|---|
| Machine availability | Keep the computer powered on, prevent sleep and recover it after reboots. | Runs the server on infrastructure designed to stay online. |
| Network access | Configure port forwarding, firewall rules and a stable local address. | Usually supplies the network endpoint; confirm the exact port and access model. |
| Updates | Apply server updates and check that clients remain compatible. | May provide update controls, but you remain responsible for timing and backups. |
| Backups | Copy saves to separate storage and test that a backup can be restored. | Ask whether backups are included, how often they run and how long they are retained. |
| Monitoring | Watch memory, disk health, logs and process status. | May expose dashboards or restart tools; verify what is actually included. |
| Community listing | Configure and maintain list registration yourself. | Confirm that the plan supports community-server registration and your console requirements. |
Choose managed hosting when nobody in the group can leave a machine online or configure a router and firewall. Choose self-hosting when you want direct control and already have a reliable machine, fast storage and the skills to maintain it. The community-versus-dedicated choice still applies in either case: ask the provider for a directly addressed server or a community-listed deployment.

Decision framework: which option fits your group?
Choose a community server when
- Xbox or PS5 players need to join through Palworld’s in-game server list.
- Players should find the world without copying an IP address and port.
- You are building a public or semi-public community and list discovery is important.
- You accept the additional configuration needed to keep a listing reachable and correctly named.
Choose a directly addressed dedicated server when
- Everyone can connect using an IP address and UDP port.
- The group is small and private, so list discovery offers little value.
- You want to restrict access to people who receive the address and credentials.
- You are comfortable handling router forwarding, firewall rules, updates and backups.
Choose managed hosting instead of running your own machine when
- No one can keep a computer online continuously.
- Your network provider blocks inbound connections or your router cannot forward ports.
- You do not want to administer Windows, Linux or Docker.
- You need a support channel and a control panel more than you need physical control of the hardware.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server does not appear in the community list
- Confirm that the dedicated-server process is still running and that the registration settings are enabled.
- Check that the listing name and platform settings match the current Pocketpair documentation.
- Verify inbound UDP forwarding and the host firewall for the configured port.
- Test from outside the hosting network; local-network testing can hide a broken public route.
- Recheck the version-specific guide, because list behavior and platform support can change.
Players receive a timeout when using the address
- Confirm that the player is using the public address, not the host’s private 192.168.x.x or similar LAN address.
- Match the port in the player’s entry, server configuration, router rule and firewall rule.
- Make sure the router forwards UDP, not only TCP.
- Check whether the host’s local IP changed and update the forwarding target if necessary.
The server starts and then crashes
- Check available memory. Pocketpair says 8 GB can boot but has a higher chance of out-of-memory crashes; target 16 GB.
- Close unrelated applications on the host and inspect logs for memory or startup errors.
- Verify that the server files and operating system are on reliable, fast storage.
- Restart from a known-good backup if a recent change damaged the installation or save.
The world save is corrupted or missing
- Stop the server cleanly before copying or restoring save files.
- Check that the storage is not low-performance or failing; Pocketpair warns that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data.
- Restore the newest verified backup to the persistent save location used by your Steam, SteamCMD or Docker installation.
- Do not recreate a Docker container without first confirming that the save directory is mounted persistently.
PS5 players cannot join
First distinguish a configuration error from a platform limitation. Pocketpair’s v0.5.0 page says PS5 cross-play is currently unavailable and says Xbox or PS5 access requires community-server deployment. Check for a newer official platform update before changing hardware or ports; a network fix cannot enable a cross-play combination that the current game version does not support.
Changing from a direct server to a community server
Because a community server is a registered dedicated server, changing the connection method does not inherently require a different world architecture. Before changing registration or moving hosts, stop the server, make a verified copy of the save, record the current port and settings, then apply the community-list configuration from the current Pocketpair guide. Test with one player before announcing the new listing.
Keep the old address documented during the transition, but do not run two writable copies of the same world at once. That can split player progress and make it unclear which save is authoritative.
Pre-launch checklist
- Decide whether players need in-game list discovery. If Xbox or PS5 access is required, plan for community deployment.
- Confirm the current platform and cross-play rules for your game version; the v0.5.0 guide lists Steam, Xbox Series/Microsoft Store Windows PC and macOS as cross-play enabled by default and says PS5 cross-play is unavailable on that page.
- Use a four-core CPU and target 16 GB RAM; treat 8 GB as a crash-prone minimum, not a reliability target.
- Install the server on fast, reliable storage and keep backups elsewhere.
- Choose Windows Steam for the simplest documented beginner route, SteamCMD for command-line control, or Docker if you already administer containers.
- Run
PalServer.exeon Windows orPalServer.shon Linux after installing app ID2394010through SteamCMD. - Allow the configured UDP port through the host firewall and forward UDP 8211 by default on the router.
- Test from outside the local network, then test the exact platform combination your group will use.
- Back up the save before updates, migrations or major configuration changes.
Bottom line
Use a community server when discovery in Palworld’s server list or Xbox/PS5 access is the deciding requirement. Use a directly addressed dedicated server when your group can use an IP address and port and prefers a private, controlled connection. In both cases, the world runs on the same dedicated-server foundation, so the real operational questions are platform support, network reachability, hardware reliability and who will maintain the machine.
