To edit a photo already in a Pages document, select it in Pages for Mac, open the Image tab in the Format Image sidebar, and choose Edit in Pixelmator Pro. Edit the image in Pixelmator Pro, then choose Save to Pages or press Command-S to update it in the document.
How to edit a Pages image in Pixelmator Pro

Choose Edit in Pixelmator Pro. The selected image opens in Pixelmator Pro.

Make your changes in Pixelmator Pro.

Choose Save to Pages, or press Command-S. Apple says the edited image updates in the Pages document.

Apple documents this as an image handoff: Pixelmator Pro edits the selected image, and the saved result returns to Pages. It is not a way to edit the complete Pages document’s text or layout in Pixelmator Pro. See Apple’s Pages for Mac guide to editing an image.
What happens to Pixelmator Pro layers?
Some Pages image operations require converting a Pixelmator image to a regular image. Apple gives Super Resolution as an example: Pages asks you to click Convert Image, and the conversion flattens Pixelmator layer data. If keeping editable layers matters, consider whether you need that Pages operation before converting.

Pages editing and Photos editing save to different places
Use Edit in Pixelmator Pro when the image is already in a Pages document and you want the edited result there. When the image is in the Photos library, Pixelmator Pro has a separate workflow: Apple documents saving changes to the Photos original with File > Modify Original in Photos. That workflow uses a sidecar file by default to preserve edits as layers. The Photos extension also offers Preserve Edits and Save Flattened choices. These Photos options do not replace the Pages handoff’s Save to Pages command. See Apple’s guides to editing from Photos in Pixelmator Pro and using the Pixelmator Pro Photos extension.

Optional Pages features are separate
Apple marks Auto Crop, Image Generation, and Super Resolution as Apple Creator Studio features in its Pages guide. They are separate from the core steps for opening an image in Pixelmator Pro and saving it back to Pages. For context, Apple’s separate guide to opening documents in Pixelmator Pro covers other document workflows, including importing a single PDF page; it does not change the Pages image handoff described here.
