pagefile.sys is Windows’ paging file, a working part of virtual-memory management—not a personal file to copy or delete. To change its size or location, use the virtual-memory controls in System Properties. If you need crash dumps, keep the paging file on the boot volume; if privacy is the concern, Windows has a separate shutdown policy that clears it, but shutdown can take much longer.
What pagefile.sys does—and what “back up” means
Windows uses the paging file to move memory pages between RAM and disk as needed. The disk space available for this file also contributes to the virtual address space available to processes. Its useful size depends on memory pressure, workload, available disk space, and crash-dump settings; there is no universal size that fits every PC. Microsoft’s page-file overview explains its role.

A backup of pagefile.sys is not a backup of your documents or a reliable way to preserve a Windows session. The Microsoft guidance covered here does not document a supported procedure for copying and restoring it as an ordinary file. If you want to preserve troubleshooting information, configure Windows to create a crash dump instead; dump files are distinct outputs from the paging file.

Can you delete pagefile.sys?
Do not try to force-delete the active file in File Explorer or from another operating system while Windows is configured to manage virtual memory. It is an operating-system-managed file, and deleting it is not the appropriate way to reclaim space. Change the virtual-memory configuration through Windows instead, and consider the effect on applications and crash dumps before reducing or disabling it.

If you simply need more free space, first inspect the current configuration and available capacity. Windows sizes the file system-managed by default, and its needs can change with workload and dump settings. Microsoft’s sizing guidance gives a complete memory dump a minimum page-file size of 1 × RAM plus 257 MB; that figure is for that dump type, not a general sizing recommendation. See Microsoft’s page-file sizing guidance.
How to change or move the paging file in Windows 11
Use the virtual-memory controls rather than manipulating the file itself. Microsoft’s detailed settings procedure is labeled for Windows 10, so wording and navigation can vary by Windows 11 release. The documented route is through System Properties:

- 【Plug-and-Play Expandability】 With no software to install, just plug it in and the drive is ready to use in Windows(For Mac,first format the drive and select the ExFat format.
- 【Fast Data Transfers 】The external hard drives with the USB 3.0 cable to provide super fast transfer speed. The theoretical read speed is as high as 110MB/s-133MB/s, and the write speed is as high as 103MB/s.
- 【High capacity in a small enclosure 】The small, lightweight design offers up to 500GB capacity, offering ample space for storing large files, multimedia content, and backups with ease. Weighing only 0.35 Lbs, it's easy to carry "
- 【Wide Compatibility】Supports PS4 5/xbox one/Windows/Linux/Mac and other operating systems, ensuring seamless integration with game consoles, various laptops and desktops .
- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
- Open Advanced system settings.
- Under Performance, select Settings.
- Open the Advanced tab, then select Change under Virtual memory.
- Review the per-volume paging-file settings. Use those controls to change the configuration or destination, then apply the change and follow any restart prompt shown by Windows.
Microsoft documents this settings route and moving procedure. The page is a Windows 10 workaround, so treat the exact labels as a guide and verify them on your Windows 11 build.

Microsoft says the paging file must be on the boot volume for the documented crash-dump feature. If you move it away, that feature may not work as expected; Microsoft says to move the paging file back to use it. Keep enough capacity on the boot volume for the dump type configured on your PC. Microsoft’s crash-dump configuration guidance describes the relationship between dump settings and paging-file placement.

What happens if you disable or customize it?
Changing the paging-file configuration trades disk space against the needs of Windows and running applications. A smaller or disabled file may leave less backing for memory use under pressure, while moving it can compromise the documented dump-file feature. A custom size or another volume may suit a particular system, but the right choice depends on the workload and dump requirements—not a fixed rule such as matching the amount of RAM.
| Choice | Disk-space effect | Memory and dump considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Leave it system-managed | Windows manages the file size; available space still matters. | Default sizing can respond to system needs. Confirm boot-volume capacity if crash dumps are required. |
| Customize its size or location | Can alter how much space is used on one or more volumes. | Size should reflect workload and dump settings. Moving it off the boot volume can prevent the documented dump feature from working as expected. |
| Disable it | Removes paging-file disk use if the configuration takes effect. | Reduces virtual-memory backing and can affect applications or crash-dump availability; do not assume the PC will behave the same under memory pressure. |
| Clear it at normal shutdown | Does not serve as a routine space-saving deletion method. | Addresses a privacy concern by clearing the file at shutdown, but can significantly lengthen shutdown. |
How to clear the paging file at shutdown
Windows includes the security policy Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile. Microsoft describes its purpose as determining whether the paging file is cleared when the device shuts down. It is a privacy-oriented shutdown setting, not a routine cleanup method. Microsoft warns that clearing adds shutdown work: its example says clearing a 2-GB paging file on a system with 2 GB of RAM can add more than 30 minutes. That is an example, not a guaranteed delay for every Windows 11 PC. Read Microsoft’s policy documentation before enabling it.

Which option fits your goal?
- Free disk space: inspect the virtual-memory settings and adjust them there; do not manually delete the active file.
- Use another drive: change the per-volume configuration in System Properties, but account for boot-volume crash-dump requirements.
- Investigate a crash: configure the appropriate dump output and retain the paging-file placement and capacity needed for that dump type.
- Reduce exposure of paging-file contents at shutdown: consider the clear-at-shutdown policy only if its potential delay is acceptable.
- Keep a backup: back up personal data and configure crash dumps if needed; copying the active paging file is not a documented substitute.
