Open the exact page check in PageCrawl and inspect its status, error, and stored screenshot. If that stored image is also blank, troubleshoot the page load and capture settings; if it looks correct, check the endpoint, authentication, webhook data, and your client’s image handling.
1. Determine where the blank image originates
Open the PageCrawl page and the specific check associated with the screenshot request. Compare the image shown in PageCrawl with the image your application receives, and note the check status and any error. PageCrawl documents screenshot retrieval as part of its website-monitoring API, not as a separate live screenshot-generation service.

Do not assume an image URL exists or contains the expected content just because a request returned a URL. Confirm the screenshot itself for the matching check.
2. Verify the screenshot request and response
PageCrawl’s API guide documents GET /api/pages/{id}/checks/{checkId}/screenshot. It also identifies page_screenshot_image as a signed URL for a full-page screenshot. The guide says Developer mode exposes copyable screenshot and visual-diff endpoints. Use the endpoint and identifiers shown for your page and check rather than guessing an ID or route: PageCrawl API guide.

- In PageCrawl, enable Developer mode and copy the screenshot request for the exact page and check.
- Use the exact route and IDs provided. PageCrawl says
latestcan replace a check ID for some latest visual-diff endpoints; do not assume that applies to the screenshot route unless its reference explicitly says so. - Check that the request carries the API token as a Bearer token. PageCrawl’s API and webhooks article documents the header as
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_TOKEN: PageCrawl API and webhooks help. - Inspect the HTTP status, response headers, and body. If the response contains a signed image URL, verify your application fetches that URL and renders the returned image bytes rather than treating the URL or an error body as image data.
- If you rely on a webhook, inspect its configured payload fields and confirm the screenshot field is included. PageCrawl says webhook payload fields are configurable.
The route, field names, and authentication above are PageCrawl-specific. Do not copy parameters such as waitFor or delay from another vendor’s screenshot API and assume PageCrawl accepts them.
3. If PageCrawl’s stored screenshot is blank
Check the target page and its error
Open the exact target URL in a normal browser, including its path and query string, and account for any login state needed to view it. If the page itself is blank or inaccessible there, capture settings alone will not repair the underlying page failure.

- Timeout: PageCrawl’s troubleshooting guidance lists check time limits of 45 seconds on Free, 90 seconds on Standard, and 180 seconds on Enterprise and Ultimate. These are PageCrawl plan limits, not independent performance measurements. If the page is slow, check whether it eventually renders in a browser and whether a suitable wait setting is needed. PageCrawl page-load troubleshooting (updated 12 September 2026).
- 401 or 403: A 401 generally indicates authentication is required; a 403 indicates access was refused, potentially because of permissions or site protection. A different location does not supply login credentials.
- 404: PageCrawl says this commonly indicates that the page is no longer available. Recheck the URL.
- 5xx: The site may be unavailable, overloaded, undergoing maintenance, or experiencing a server problem. Check the target site and retry when appropriate.
- Unreachable or region-specific content: The site may be down or accessible only from certain countries. Test a relevant supported location if the page’s availability varies by region.
- CAPTCHA or bot challenge: Confirm the screenshot actually shows a challenge. Changing location or using Relay does not guarantee it will disappear. PageCrawl documents a separately configured CAPTCHA integration on Enterprise and Ultimate.
- Selector not found: If the check depends on a CSS or XPath selector, the page may have changed. Verify the selector against the current page and update it if needed.
Match the rendering setting to the failure
PageCrawl’s page-adjustment settings include a wait for text to appear or disappear, a fixed delay, browser-engine selection, location, desktop or mobile view, JavaScript on or off, and “Scroll to load all content” for lazy-loaded material. It also supports recorded actions such as clicking, typing, and navigating before capture. Use the setting that addresses the observed problem; changing several at once makes it harder to tell which one helped. PageCrawl advanced page adjustments.
- If the page’s content is inserted by scripts, verify JavaScript is enabled and try the real browser engine when the page needs browser behavior.
- If an element or content appears only after interaction, configure a recorded action such as the necessary click or typing step.
- If relevant content loads as you scroll, enable “Scroll to load all content.”
- If the page works in one region but not another, test the relevant location. PageCrawl discusses Relay for personal use and managed connection choices for eligible business plans, but no connection option guarantees access to every site.
Keep JavaScript actions bounded
PageCrawl says custom JavaScript actions run after page load and before extraction, require a real browser engine rather than Fast mode, and have a 30-second safety timeout. JavaScript tracked elements also have that documented safety limit. Keep any waits or polling bounded, and prefer a purpose-built wait setting when it can express the condition. 4. Make one change, then rerun the check
- Choose one setting tied to the evidence—for example, enable JavaScript, wait for a specific text condition, select the necessary browser engine, or turn on scrolling for lazy-loaded content.
- Run a new PageCrawl check rather than treating the previous screenshot as updated.
- Inspect the new check’s status, error, and stored screenshot. Compare its visual diff where useful.
- If your application still shows blank, copy the new page/check endpoint from Developer mode and repeat the response and rendering checks from the previous section.
This isolates whether the configuration change fixed capture or whether the remaining issue is in retrieval or display.
