A page-level deep link opens a PDF at a specific page instead of at its first page. In WordPress, the common mechanism is a PDF address with a page fragment such as #page=12, which Document Engine’s WordPress.org listing documents as the way to link to a page. Connecting that to PDF search is the extra step: the search index has to know which page each match came from, and each search result has to link to that page number. This guide explains how those pieces fit together, what current WordPress PDF plugins document, and how to build the feature and test it. It does not reproduce the source code of any single plugin.
Page links and PDF search are separate features
Search answers the question “where does this term appear?” A page link answers “which page should the reader see?” Either can exist without the other. A viewer can offer in-document search but no way to link to page 12. Another can accept #page=12 in a URL but have no search at all. Deep-linked search results need both: a search that returns page-level matches and a link that opens the matching page.

Mozilla’s PDF.js is the rendering engine behind the viewer-based plugins listed here. Using PDF.js does not by itself give you page-level search links, because the viewer’s URL handling and the plugin’s own result-link logic are separate layers. How a page-level search link is built
1. The PDF address carries the page
The destination is the PDF’s address plus a fragment. For a file at https://example.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/manual.pdf, the page-12 link is https://example.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/manual.pdf#page=12. The fragment is only the last part of the address; the server never receives it, so the viewer in the browser has to interpret it.
2. The index stores pages, not whole documents
A document-level index can tell you that a term appears in a file, but not on which page. Index each page separately: store the document ID, a 1-based page number in the file’s physical order, and that page’s extracted text. Search queries then return page rows, which you group by document for display.

3. Each result generates its own link
When rendering a result, build the URL from the stored document address and the stored page number. Sanitize both values before output.

}If file names contain spaces or non-ASCII characters, encode the path before appending the fragment, for example by encoding each path segment with rawurlencode(). Test any encoded URL in a browser, since encoding mistakes are a common cause of links that open the wrong file or no file.
Build steps
- Confirm the viewer honours the fragment. Open a PDF URL with
#page=3in each browser and viewer you plan to support. If it opens on page 1, the embed route is ignoring the fragment, and you need a different viewer or route before building search links. - Extract text per page. Run your extraction at the page level during indexing. Record the page count so you can reject out-of-range numbers.
- Store the mapping. Keep the document ID, the physical page number, and the text in a table or index you can query by term.
- Return page rows from search. Include the document address, page number, and a short text snippet for each match.
- Render links with the helper above. Use the stored page number, not a value parsed from the snippet.
- Reindex when a PDF changes. Replacing a file at the same address without re-extracting its text leaves stale page numbers.
- Test a sample of results. Click several results per document, including first, middle, and last pages, and confirm each opens the page that contains the matched text.
Failure modes to check
- Off-by-one pages. The fragment uses the file’s physical page order. Printed page labels, such as “xii” or “Page 1” starting after a cover, often differ. Show the printed label to readers if you want, but link the physical page number.
- Scanned PDFs return no matches. Pages without a text layer have nothing to index. Those documents need OCR before page-level search works.
- Fragment ignored in embedded views. A link can work when opened directly and fail inside an embed. Test the exact embed route your readers will use.
- Stale results after replacement. Cached results or an old index can point to pages that no longer contain the match.
- Encoding errors. Unencoded spaces or special characters can break the path before the fragment is read.
Checks before release
- Each result link opens the expected page in the browsers you support.
- Out-of-range page numbers are rejected rather than producing a link.
- Links survive a round trip through the WordPress editor and any caching layer you use.
- Scanned PDFs are identified and excluded from search results or flagged to readers.
- The plugin version and bundled PDF.js version are recorded so you can re-test after updates.
The principle is simple, but the details decide whether readers land on the right page: the viewer must honour the fragment, the index must be page-level, and every link must be built from validated, stored values.

Do I need to edit my PDFs to add page anchors?
No. The fragment refers to the file’s existing page order, so the PDF itself does not change. The only requirement is an index that records each page’s number.
Does a #page link highlight the matched word on that page?
Not established by the sources reviewed. A plain page fragment identifies the page, but it does not carry the search term. Document Engine describes highlighted matches inside its own viewer’s search, which is a different mechanism from a page link.
