A padded uniform random blob (PURB) is a design approach for encrypted data formats that aims to conceal recognizable format metadata and make the blob’s total length less revealing. When properly constructed, it is intended to look like uniformly random bits to someone without a relevant decryption key. That goal is conditional: it does not mean every encrypted file is a PURB, or that a PURB hides every observable detail of a communication.

The term comes from the paper “Reducing Metadata Leakage from Encrypted Files and Communication with PURBs,” by Kirill Nikitin, Ludovic Barman, Wouter Lueks, Matthew Underwood, and Jean-Pierre Hubaux. The indexed Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies record describes the goal as reducing metadata leakage from encrypted files and communication.

In plain terms, a PURB is meant to avoid leaving a recognizable wrapper around encrypted content. Its design also uses padding so the object’s observed size conveys less about what it contains. The intended result is that an observer without the relevant key cannot distinguish a correctly formed PURB from a uniformly random bit string, subject to the construction’s security assumptions.

What information is a PURB designed to hide?
- Cleartext format clues: Conventional file or message formats may expose identifiable headers or other structural details even when their contents are encrypted. PURB-style design aims to avoid such recognizable metadata.
- Some information from total length: Padding is used to make the encrypted object’s length less informative about its contents. It reduces this leakage rather than establishing that length reveals nothing in every implementation or context.
The relevant property is observer-relative: it concerns someone who lacks a relevant decryption key and a blob constructed according to the design. It is not a claim about arbitrary ciphertexts or every encryption tool. The paper’s indexed description supports this bounded goal; it does not establish that PURBs conceal endpoint identities, timing, traffic patterns, or application behavior.

How does the design make a blob look random?
At a high level, a PURB avoids exposing recognizable cleartext format structure, while padding helps make its total length less revealing. The encrypted representation is intended to be computationally indistinguishable from uniformly random bits to an observer without the relevant key. “Looks random” therefore describes a security goal under specific assumptions—not literal randomness, complete anonymity, or a guarantee that all observations are hidden.
What does one software implementation show?
The tird 0.19.0 project page calls its encrypted cryptoblob a PURB-style format. Its documentation describes ciphertext and an optional MAC tag among random-looking padding, no identifiable headers, and randomized padding on both sides. For that version, the listed default padding is 0–20% of the unpadded cryptoblob size on each side. These are details of tird 0.19.0, not requirements that define every PURB.

The project page dates tird 0.19.0 to March 24, 2025, labels the project alpha, and warns that it has not been independently audited, its author does not have a cryptography background, and development is incomplete. It is an example of an implementation description, not an assurance that the software is safe to use for sensitive data.

- It does not make every encrypted file or message a PURB; the format must be deliberately designed to meet the relevant goal.
- It does not establish complete anonymity, untraceability, or undetectability.
- It does not, on the available description, guarantee concealment of timing, endpoints, traffic volume, or application-level behavior.
- It does not mean that padding eliminates all length leakage in every design.
Those limits matter because hiding structure inside an encrypted object is different from hiding the circumstances around its transmission. A PURB’s stated focus is format metadata and total length.

How to assess a PURB-style format
When evaluating a specific format or implementation, look for clear answers to these questions:
- Which format metadata is hidden, and what remains visible?
- What length information can still be inferred, and how is padding applied?
- Is the random-looking indistinguishability property specified? Which observer and key assumptions does it use?
- What padding overhead does this implementation incur, and does that figure apply to the version or configuration in question?
- Has the implementation received an independent security audit, and what is its development status?
The term PURB indicates a design objective, not by itself a verdict on a particular implementation’s correctness or security.
