If Owncast says your stream is live but YouTube shows a black screen, first check where the video disappears: YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, the Owncast page, or both. Then verify the encoder’s YouTube destination and stream key separately from Owncast’s RTMP endpoint, and inspect Owncast’s transcoder log if its playback is also blank. A live connection confirms that a source connected; it does not prove that video was transcoded or reached YouTube correctly.
Find where the video disappears
Use the YouTube Live Control Room preview and the Owncast player as separate checks. Owncast receives an incoming stream and turns it into HLS segments for its viewers; YouTube has its own ingest and preview path. The two services can therefore show different results.

- Owncast plays video, but the YouTube preview is black or absent: start with the encoder’s YouTube output routing, destination URL, selected stream, and key.
- Both Owncast and YouTube are black: check the source and encoder settings, then look for errors in Owncast’s transcoding path.
- YouTube preview shows video, but the published YouTube player is black: the encoder has at least delivered a previewable feed. Check that you started the intended YouTube stream and inspect the player and stream status; do not change ingest transport without evidence it is the problem.
This comparison narrows the search; it does not by itself prove the cause. Owncast’s troubleshooting wizard also frames video-related log errors and an encoder that disconnects immediately as useful diagnostic clues. Owncast troubleshooting

Check each destination and stream key
Owncast’s RTMP endpoint
Owncast accepts RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default, though the port can be configured. Its stream key is accepted on the /live/ path. In an encoder with separate server and key fields, the usual arrangement is server rtmp://yourserver:1935/live and the matching Owncast key in the stream-key field. YouTube’s destination
In the encoder, check the YouTube server URL and stream key for the specific stream you intend to broadcast. These are separate credentials from Owncast’s endpoint and key. A single encoder can be configured to send to a different destination than the one you are checking, so inspect its actual output routing rather than relying on an Owncast “live” indicator.
For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to wait for the Live Control Room preview and then click Go live. If no preview arrives, check that the selected stream and encoder destination correspond. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; treat them as credentials and do not publish or share them. Use video settings Owncast supports
For the most predictable compatibility with Owncast, use H.264 video and AAC audio. Owncast may recognize other formats, but does not assure the same transcoding and playback compatibility for them. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; Owncast advises against leaving this setting on Auto. Owncast: Set Up Broadcasting Software

Choose a setting your server’s processing capacity and internet upload bandwidth can sustain. If the encoder’s own preview is already black, investigate the source and encoder before attributing the issue to YouTube.
Read Owncast’s logs when its output is blank
- Open the Owncast application or server logs and check entries around the time the picture failed.
- If the general log does not explain the issue, inspect
data/logs/transcoder.logfor transcoder startup, encoding, or output errors. - Confirm the server’s FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder. A hardware encoder appearing in a list does not prove its drivers and hardware are configured correctly.
- If you use hardware encoding, compare the failure time and error details with the relevant codec and hardware setup rather than assuming that the machine needs an upgrade.
Owncast’s hardware-codec guidance suggests FFmpeg 4.1.5 or newer; this is a suggestion, not a stated hard minimum. Owncast: Hardware Encoding

A 2021 Owncast GitHub issue illustrates why “connected” and “successfully writing playable HLS output” are different states: that report described an inbound connection followed by HLS output errors and a possible FFmpeg build issue involving libx264. Check RTMPS only when YouTube ingest points to a connection problem
If YouTube never receives a preview and the encoder reports an SSL or connection error, verify the protocol and server URL copied from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP over TLS/SSL; the encoder must support it. YouTube’s troubleshooting also says port 443 may help with certain SSL errors. Use the URL and port appropriate to the selected protocol, rather than changing transport just because a player is black when YouTube already shows video. There is no single cause that can be identified from “live” status alone. The actual encoder configuration, the two previews, and the logs determine which branch applies.
