Short answer: there is no universal VPS size for Owncast. CPU demand depends mainly on whether you transcode and how many output qualities you create; bandwidth depends mainly on the bitrates viewers receive and how many viewers watch at once. Owncast’s documentation says, “It is impossible to give a single answer for what the requirements are for you to run Owncast, or what it will cost.” It does not set a generic minimum RAM figure. Most importantly, Owncast is not a YouTube relay: it accepts an RTMP broadcast and serves viewers through HLS. Sending a stream to YouTube is a separate encoder destination and workflow.
How Owncast, a VPS, and YouTube fit together
Owncast receives a live broadcast over RTMP, converts it into HLS video segments, and serves those segments to its own viewers. A VPS running Owncast therefore does the ingest, any configured video conversion, and—unless you use external segment delivery—the viewer-facing distribution.

YouTube Live is a separate destination. You send a stream to YouTube by entering YouTube’s stream URL and key in an encoder. Owncast’s setup documentation describes its own RTMP ingest endpoint and key; it does not establish a built-in workflow that forwards an Owncast stream to YouTube. To publish to both Owncast and YouTube, configure a separate multi-destination encoder or relay and budget for the additional outbound stream.

Keep the keys separate and private: an Owncast key authorizes broadcasting to your Owncast server, while a YouTube key authorizes sending to your YouTube channel. Use the destination’s own URL and key in the relevant encoder.

Estimate CPU by what the server must encode
Passthrough and transcoding have very different CPU costs. In passthrough, Owncast does minimal processing of the incoming video. Transcoding means converting the source into one or more playback outputs, which uses server CPU. Resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and encoder preset all affect the load.
| Owncast output setup | CPU guidance from Owncast |
|---|---|
| Single passthrough output | Minimal CPU |
| One transcoded output | Light |
| Two quality outputs | Moderate |
| Three outputs or heavy compression | Heavy |
Owncast offers a rough heuristic that one CPU core can often handle one transcoded output quality at 30 fps. It is not a sizing guarantee: hardware and encoding settings vary, and Owncast explicitly recommends testing on the target machine. Do not buy a VPS by multiplying the number of outputs by a fixed core count.
A safer sizing procedure
- Start with one output at average settings, as Owncast’s video guide recommends.
- Run the stream on the VPS under realistic conditions and observe CPU use, output stability, and playback.
- Add output variants one at a time only if the server has headroom. Each transcoded variant adds encoding work.
- If performance is poor, reduce the number of variants, lower the input resolution or frame rate, or reduce CPU-intensive encoding settings.
Higher frame rates increase both server CPU demand and the data viewers receive. A single high-quality output may therefore be simpler to operate but less adaptable to viewers on slower connections; multiple quality variants improve choice at the cost of more encoding and, if served directly, more aggregate delivery traffic.

RAM: choose for the workload, not an invented minimum
The reviewed Owncast resource and video guidance does not give a generic VPS RAM floor. That means a fixed claim such as “Owncast needs at least X GB” is not supported by those documents. Choose memory for the complete deployment, including the operating system and any other services on the VPS, then monitor it while streaming under the workload you expect. A numerical recommendation needs workload-specific documentation or reproducible testing.
Calculate viewer bandwidth and monthly transfer
For direct delivery from the VPS, estimate sustained outbound throughput for each output using Owncast’s formula:
bitrate in kbps × concurrent viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps

For one 5,000 kbps output watched by 25 people at once, that is 5,000 × 25 ÷ 1,000 = 125 Mbps sustained outbound throughput, the worked example in Owncast’s current resource-requirements documentation. If viewers are split across quality variants, calculate each variant with the number of viewers receiving it, then add the results.

It does multiply delivery: every viewer receiving a direct stream adds roughly that output’s bitrate to the server’s outbound load.
Estimate monthly data use
Owncast gives this approximate traffic formula:
(bitrate in kbps × duration in seconds × viewers) ÷ 8,000,000 = GB

Its example for a two-hour stream at 4,000 kbps works out to:
| Concurrent viewers | Approximate data for a two-hour stream at 4,000 kbps |
|---|---|
| 10 | 36 GB |
| 25 | 90 GB |
| 50 | 180 GB |
These are arithmetic examples from Owncast’s documentation, not a VPS provider’s transfer allowance or a forecast of your audience. A 1 Gbps port headline does not establish that a VPS plan can sustain that rate continuously or includes unlimited monthly transfer. Before choosing a plan, check its sustained outbound limits, monthly transfer allocation, overage policy, region, and traffic terms. Owncast’s rough reference is about 200 concurrent viewers at 5,000 kbps on a 1 Gbps port, not a guarantee for a particular VPS.

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. The table above quotes selected H.264 values; YouTube lists different ranges for AV1 and H.265. YouTube also transcodes live input into multiple playback formats for viewers.
Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for compatibility, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its broadcast guide says H.265 and some other audio formats may be recognized at ingest, but transcoding and playback compatibility are assured only for H.264 and AAC. Use the Owncast suggestions for an Owncast input, not as YouTube’s separate ingest requirements.
Network budget when also sending to YouTube
The broadcaster’s upload into Owncast and the VPS’s outbound delivery to Owncast viewers are separate network flows. If a separately configured process sends a copy from the VPS to YouTube, count that outbound copy too. For example, a 1080p60 H.264 YouTube feed using YouTube’s recommended 17 Mbps adds about 17 Mbps of sustained outbound traffic from the machine sending that feed, apart from viewer delivery. The exact source machine depends on how the multi-destination setup is configured.

With direct delivery, the Owncast VPS serves the HLS segments to viewers. Owncast also supports S3-compatible object storage for distributing video segments: the server uploads one copy of each configured quality, while the storage service handles viewer-facing delivery.
| Approach | What it shifts | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Serve segments directly from the VPS | Encoding and viewer egress remain on the Owncast server | Simpler delivery path, but audience traffic consumes the VPS’s outbound capacity and transfer allowance |
| Use S3-compatible segment storage | Viewer-facing delivery moves to the storage service; the VPS still encodes and uploads each configured quality | Can reduce VPS viewer-egress load, but adds storage and egress charges, setup effort, and operational complexity |
Object storage does not remove Owncast’s encoding workload. Compare the provider’s storage, request, and egress charges with the VPS bandwidth limits before deciding; the right choice depends on audience size and delivery patterns.
Troubleshoot resource and stream problems
- CPU stays high or output stutters: transcoding, multiple variants, high frame rate, or demanding compression may exceed available CPU. Start with one output, reduce variants or input frame rate/quality, and retest.
- Viewers buffer while CPU has headroom: check sustained outbound throughput and monthly transfer limits. Direct delivery multiplies bitrate by concurrent viewers; a nominal port speed alone does not confirm continuous throughput.
- The server’s bandwidth rises sharply as the audience grows: this is expected with direct HLS delivery. Recalculate each output’s bitrate × viewers and consider S3-compatible segment delivery if VPS egress is the constraint.
- YouTube rejects or degrades the separate feed: confirm you used YouTube’s own stream URL and key, the selected codec’s current bitrate guidance, CBR, and the recommended two-second keyframe interval. Do not substitute Owncast’s example bitrate for YouTube’s settings.
- Owncast ingest or playback compatibility is unreliable: use H.264 video and AAC audio, which Owncast identifies as its compatibility recommendations, and confirm the encoder is pointed at Owncast’s RTMP endpoint rather than YouTube’s.
- The stream stops at the destination: check that the correct destination’s stream key remains configured and private, that the sending encoder is active, and that the relevant server or plan has not hit a network or transfer limit.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option, not an Owncast-to-YouTube relay. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the service loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
