If your OVHcloud VPS YouTube stream has no audio, check the source file, FFmpeg’s audio mapping, and the audio encoder settings before changing servers. Video can reach YouTube while audio is missing because the input has no audio stream, FFmpeg selected the wrong track or disabled audio, or the output does not match the ingestion protocol. Without your command, media probe, protocol, and YouTube stream-health message, there is no way to name one confirmed cause.
Start by identifying which audio path you are using
The fix depends on whether your stream should carry sound from an existing file, deliberately be silent, or capture a live audio device. First establish which case applies; do not add a silent track if you are trying to recover speech or music.

- Existing recording: inspect the file for an audio stream, then make sure FFmpeg selects and encodes it.
- Intentionally silent video: a generated silent audio stream may suit the workflow if a track is needed.
- Microphone or sound device: confirm the VPS actually exposes an input device before configuring FFmpeg capture.
Check whether the input contains audio
Run this on the VPS, replacing input.ext with the actual filename:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.ext
Look in the output for an audio stream, typically identified by a line beginning Stream and containing Audio:. FFmpeg also prints an input stream summary when it starts. If neither shows audio, FFmpeg cannot forward a track that is not present in that input. Check that you are using the intended file and, if the file should contain sound, listen to or extract a short sample to distinguish a missing track from a present-but-silent one.

Make FFmpeg select and encode the intended audio
For an input with video and audio, explicit mapping makes the selected streams clear. In an RTMP/RTMPS file-to-YouTube workflow, this illustrative output template maps the first video stream and optionally maps the first audio stream:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128k
-f flv 'rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY'
This is a starting template, not a tested command or a guarantee for every input, FFmpeg build, or stream-key configuration. Adapt stream indices to the file’s actual streams and use the endpoint and key for your YouTube broadcast. Keep the real stream key private; do not publish it when asking for help. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. FFmpeg documents mapping as a way to select desired streams; its documentation notes that mapping is particularly useful when choosing an audio language from a DVD (FFmpeg documentation).

Look for options that remove audio
- Check that the command does not include
-an, which disables audio recording. - Confirm the intended audio stream is mapped. For a simple single-input example,
-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream if present; the?makes the mapping optional, but does not create audio. - Check that the output has an audio codec specified, such as
-c:a aac, and inspect later output-specific options for settings that replace or disable the track. - With multiple inputs or multiple audio tracks, use the stream index belonging to the intended source rather than assuming the first track is correct.
Match audio settings to YouTube’s ingestion protocol
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, its current encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. AAC is a practical first test for an ordinary stereo stream. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a diagnosis of what is wrong with your particular command. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStereo and 5.1 are different cases
Do not apply surround-sound settings to a normal stereo source. YouTube says RTMP ingestion supports 5.1 only with AAC and recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1. It also warns that channel configurations other than mono, stereo, or 5.1 may convert unreliably to stereo. Check the actual channel layout before choosing settings. See YouTube’s 5.1 streaming guidance.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
If you are using HLS, do not reuse the RTMP recipe
YouTube’s HLS audio guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3. HLS also has packaging and delivery requirements: TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, among other configuration details. Use the documentation for your selected protocol and encoder rather than assuming an RTMP/FLV command is suitable for HLS. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance and the Google developer guide to HLS ingestion.
For an intentionally silent stream, generate silence only if appropriate
If the video is meant to have no sound but your workflow needs an audio stream, FFmpeg’s anullsrc filter can provide silence. For example, this input fragment creates stereo silence at 44.1 kHz:

- Podcast, Record, Live Stream, This Portable Audio Interface Covers it All - USB sound card for Mac or PC delivers 48kHz audio resolution for pristine recording every time
- Be ready for anything with this versatile M-AUDIO interface - Record guitar, vocals or line input signals with two combo XLR / Line / Instrument Inputs with phantom power

- Get the best out of your Microphones - M-Track Duo’s transparent Crystal Preamps guarantee optimal sound from all your microphones including condenser mics
- The MPC Production Experience - Includes MPC Beats Software complete with the essential production tools from Akai Professional
-f lavfi -i anullsrc=channel_layout=stereo:sample_rate=44100
Map the generated input’s audio and encode it for the output. If that generated source is input 1 in your full command, the relevant options could be -map 1:a:0 -c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128k. Input numbering depends on the complete command. Check that the installed FFmpeg build has the needed filter and test the result. Generated silence cannot restore missing music, speech, or other source audio.
If sound should come from a microphone or device
Device capture is separate from forwarding audio in a file. Before writing a capture command, check whether Linux exposes an ALSA device:

cat /proc/asound/cards
cat /proc/asound/devices
FFmpeg’s device documentation describes ALSA identifiers in the form hw:CARD[,DEV[,SUBDEV]]. PulseAudio capture also depends on FFmpeg being built with the necessary support and on access to the appropriate server. Consult the FFmpeg input-device documentation for the available device options.
OVHcloud’s KVM guide describes browser-based emulated keyboard, video, and mouse access; it does not establish that a VPS has a physical microphone or sound-capture device. A microphone workflow needs an audio source made available to the server. See OVHcloud’s KVM documentation.
Test the stream and use YouTube’s health messages
Run a representative test before the broadcast you care about, then inspect YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health warnings while it is receiving the feed. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

| What you observe | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
ffprobe reports no audio stream |
Whether the selected input file is the intended one and whether it actually contains sound. | Use the correct source file, or generate silence only if silence is intended. |
| An audio stream is listed, but YouTube receives no sound | Audio mapping, -an, output codec, and any later output options. |
Map the intended audio stream explicitly and set a compatible output audio codec. |
| The file has several audio streams | Which track contains the desired language or content, and which stream index the command maps. | Change the audio map to the correct stream index. |
| Audio is present but silent | Listen to or extract a short sample; a stream can exist without audible content. | Fix or replace the source if it should contain sound. Mapping and encoding do not restore silent source material. |
| Device-capture command has no input | Whether ALSA lists a device and whether PulseAudio support and server access are available. | Make an audio source available to the VPS, then configure FFmpeg for the actual device. |
| YouTube reports a stream-health warning | The precise warning, ingestion protocol, and corresponding encoder configuration. | Resolve the reported issue and verify again with a representative test stream. |
To narrow down an incident, keep the complete FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, the ffprobe output, the ingestion protocol, and the exact YouTube Live Control Room warning. Those details distinguish source, mapping, encoding, and protocol problems.
