Capture the Google results page as it appears, keep Google’s own sponsored labels visible, then add any explanatory “Ad” or “Organic” callouts as separate annotations. Choose a live screenshot or an ad preview
A live Google Search screenshot documents what appeared on a particular results page at a particular time. It is useful for a report, article, or visual record, but the page can vary across markets, devices, and searches.
If you need to check how your own ad appears or diagnose why it is not showing, open Google Ads and go to Tools > Troubleshooting > Ad preview and diagnosis. Google recommends this tool over searching directly because previewing avoids affecting impression data. Its results can change over time and may not reflect all campaign activity. Capture a live Google results page
- Set up the search. Open Google Search, enter the exact query, and navigate to the results you need to document. Use the intended market and language; do not imply a result is universal based on one capture.
- Record the context. Note the query, market or locale, language, device or viewport, date and time, sign-in state, and scroll position. Include these details in the image caption or the report beside it.
- Capture the screen. Use your device’s normal screenshot command for the visible viewport. If the page extends below the fold and the full page matters, use a browser full-page capture option or an extension. Inspect the output for missing, repeated, or visibly stitched sections.
- Keep Google’s labels intact. Preserve the sponsored labels visible on the page. Google announced a “Sponsored results” group label for text ads and “Sponsored” labels on other ad units, including Shopping ads; the presentation can change by market and device. - Add annotations only after capture. If readers need extra help distinguishing types, place clear “Ad” and “Organic” callouts in a separate annotation layer or copy. Do not cover Google’s own labels or alter, remove, or manufacture search results. Retain the original screenshot alongside any annotated version.
- Caption the image. Identify the query, market, device or viewport, and capture date. If the precise layout matters, capture close to publication because search results and labels can change.
How to label sponsored and organic results accurately
Use Google’s on-page sponsorship label as the primary evidence that a placement is an ad. Do not classify every result above the first ordinary listing as sponsored based on position or visual style alone. Organic results are listings that are not marked as sponsored; if the page’s labeling is unclear, describe what is visible rather than assigning a category by guesswork.
Google’s October 13, 2025 announcement said text ads would be grouped under a single “Sponsored results” label and that “Sponsored” also applies to other ad units such as Shopping ads. Because Search layouts may vary, label the screenshot according to the labels actually visible in that capture, not an assumption about how every Google page is arranged.
Full-page capture and annotation options
A regular screenshot is usually the simplest choice for a one-off record of the visible viewport. For long pages or recurring documentation, a full-page capture feature or third-party extension may be more convenient. SERPshot’s Chrome Web Store listing describes stitched Google and Bing screenshots and result parsing; SERP Feature Annotator’s listing describes colored overlays for ads, organic results, and other page features. These are vendor descriptions, not independent tests. Check current availability, permissions, privacy terms, and functionality before installing or relying on an extension.
Whichever method you use, review the final image at full size. Full-page stitching can produce missing, duplicated, or uneven sections, and annotations should make the distinction clearer without changing the captured page.

Usage and publication considerations
Google’s Search screenshot guidance says to show Search realistically and not alter the interface or manufacture, remove, or alter results. You are responsible for securing any third-party permissions needed for content shown in screenshots. Google’s guidance says permission is not needed for Search screenshots used in print for educational or instructional purposes, but it also prohibits certain print uses, requires Google approval for Search in advertisements, and asks for a trademark tagline beneath images featuring Search.
