Blizzard has announced major Season 5 reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, including Sombra’s move from Damage to Support, but the announcement reviewed here does not provide their complete final kits. Earlier June 2026 balance changes and a provisional rework shortlist are separate from those Season 5 plans.
What counts as a hero rework?
A rework is a substantial redesign of a hero’s kit or play pattern. A balance update, by contrast, can tune damage, cooldowns, or individual abilities while leaving the hero’s underlying role and approach largely intact. The label alone does not tell you what changed: check the dated patch notes for the actual abilities and effects.

Overwatch has also featured creator-designed hero changes in Community Crafted, a limited-time Arcade mode. Those event-only versions should not be treated as the standard live kits. Blizzard described the mode in its Season 3 announcement; consult the relevant dated announcement for the event’s specifics.

Sombra and Roadhog: Season 5 plans
Blizzard’s BlizzCon announcement describes major Season 5 reworks for Sombra and Roadhog and says Sombra will move from Damage to Support. That role change may alter her expected team function, but the reviewed announcement does not set out every resulting ability or confirm a final kit. Treat these as announced plans, not a complete description of what is live. Blizzard’s BlizzCon announcement

Lifeweaver: an earlier provisional shortlist
In an earlier Director’s Take, Blizzard named Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog as an “extremely early shortlist” for possible future reworks and explicitly said the list was subject to change. That was consideration, not a launch commitment. The later Season 5 announcement names Sombra and Roadhog; it does not establish that Lifeweaver is included in those plans. How do the earlier June 2026 changes fit in?
Sombra’s dated adjustments
Blizzard’s June 2026 patch notes describe adjustments to Stealth, Translocator, and Hack intended to restore Sombra’s flanker identity and improve her scouting role. Those are changes documented for that update; they should not be mistaken for the full later Season 5 rework. Overwatch Patch Notes — June 2026

Lifeweaver’s dated adjustments
The same June notes say Blizzard addressed clunky-feeling weapons and adjusted Thorn Volley, Petal Platform, and Tree of Life. These documented ability updates do not, by themselves, establish that a complete Lifeweaver rework is scheduled. Overwatch Patch Notes — June 2026
What changes—and what might stay the same?
A rework can change abilities, inputs, cooldown or resource demands, mobility, escape options, counterplay, role, and the hero’s team function. The extent depends on the patch. Until Blizzard publishes a complete kit, players should not assume which specific mechanics will remain or disappear. For Sombra, the announced role move is known; the full ability-by-ability outcome is not established in the announcement reviewed here.

When does a rework go live?
“Announced for Season 5” identifies Blizzard’s stated plan, not a verified live implementation date or a guarantee that every announced detail has shipped. To establish what is playable now, check the official Overwatch Patch Notes archive and look for the relevant dated rollout notes. Use those notes—not an announcement or an Arcade event—as the authority for the current live kit.
How to adapt when a hero changes
- Read the current dated patch notes. Separate live changes from announced plans and temporary mode rules.
- List what actually changed. Note ability inputs and effects, cooldowns or resource costs, ranges, mobility, escapes, and team functions.
- Reassess the hero’s job. A role change can shift team expectations and matchups even if some familiar abilities remain.
- Practice changed interactions in a low-stakes mode. Then revisit old matchup and composition assumptions before relying on them in competitive play.
How to compare old and new versions fairly
Use the patch date and version as the baseline, then compare role and team function, ability inputs and effects, cooldown or resource demands, mobility and escape options, and counterplay. Label each item as announced, live, temporary, or unknown. The official material reviewed here does not provide a validated performance comparison or named win-rate statistics for the announced Season 5 reworks.
