Outlook: What to Know About Marking Messages Read on Selection Change

Outlook can mark a Reading Pane message read when you select another one. Learn how that setting differs from the viewing delay and manual read controls.

In Outlook, “Mark item as read when the selection changes” controls whether a message shown in the Reading Pane is marked read when you select a different message. Turn it off if a brief preview should not change a message’s status; Outlook also has a separate setting for marking a message read after it has been viewed for a chosen time.

What the selection-change setting means

Outlook’s read status can change without opening a message in its own window. When a message is displayed in the Reading Pane, selecting another message can mark the first one as read if the selection-change option is enabled. Microsoft Support describes the behavior this way: “Outlook marks a message as read when you select it.” Microsoft’s Outlook guidance covers Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, and Outlook 2021.

This is a configurable Outlook behavior, not a general rule for email or messaging apps. The setting is also distinct from the Reading Pane option that marks a message read after it has been viewed for a specified number of seconds.

Turn off automatic marking in classic Outlook for Windows

For the classic Windows interface, Microsoft gives this path:

  1. Open File > Options > Advanced.
  2. Under Outlook panes, select Reading Pane.
  3. Clear Mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane and Mark item as read when the selection changes.
  4. Confirm the changes with OK.

Clearing both options prevents the Reading Pane’s view and selection-change triggers from automatically marking messages read. If you want a delay rather than no automatic change, keep the view option enabled and adjust the number of seconds Outlook waits before marking an item read; the selection-change option is a separate control.

These directions are for the classic Windows interface, not a promise that every Outlook client has the same labels or controls. Microsoft notes that this function is not available on all Windows versions. Check the exact Outlook client and its current settings before following a path that does not match your screen.

Choose a read-state workflow

  • Keep brief previews unread: Turn off both Reading Pane options so changing selection or viewing briefly does not automatically mark a message read.
  • Allow a pause before marking read: Use the Reading Pane viewing delay to give yourself time to preview messages. The delay governs time spent viewing; it is not the same as changing selection.
  • Prefer explicit control: Turn off automatic transitions and use Outlook’s manual Mark as Read or Mark as Unread actions. Microsoft also lists Ctrl+Q for marking read and Ctrl+U for marking unread.

There is no documented universal best choice. The practical question is whether a preview should count as having been read, whether a time buffer is useful, or whether you would rather change status yourself.

How read-state controls differ across products

Other software illustrates why read status should be understood product by product, rather than as one shared convention.

Product or feature Documented trigger or control What the documentation establishes
Outlook Reading Pane Viewing, a configurable time delay, or changing selection Microsoft documents separate Reading Pane options and manual read/unread actions. Microsoft Support
Oracle Social Network Outlook add-in Selection change and timed tooltip viewing Oracle documents behavior for its Outlook add-in; it should not be taken as a description of Outlook itself. Oracle documentation
Slack Preferences affecting whether unseen channel messages remain unread Slack describes its own read-state preferences in screen-reader guidance. Slack documentation
Infor CSI Explicit Mark As Read action Infor documents a manual button for its product. Infor documentation

These examples describe different products and controls; they do not establish that one design is more usable for everyone.
