To enable dark mode in Outlook for Mac, open Outlook > Preferences > General, then choose Dark under Appearance. Choose System instead if you want Outlook to match your Mac’s light or dark appearance.
Choose dark, light, or system appearance in Outlook
- In Outlook, open the Outlook menu and select Preferences.
- Select General.
- Under Appearance, choose the behavior you want:
- Dark keeps Outlook dark, regardless of your macOS appearance setting.
- Light keeps Outlook light, regardless of your macOS appearance setting.
- System makes Outlook follow your Mac’s light or dark appearance.

Set macOS to dark appearance
If Outlook is set to System, change the Mac’s appearance to control whether Outlook appears light or dark.

- On current macOS versions, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings > Appearance, then select Dark.
- On older macOS versions, open System Preferences > General and select the dark appearance option.
If the appearance option is missing
Microsoft distinguishes new Outlook for Mac from legacy Outlook for Mac, and menu wording or feature availability can vary by version. If you cannot find Outlook > Preferences > General, identify which Outlook version you are using and check Microsoft’s Outlook for Mac features guidance. Microsoft says support for legacy Outlook for Mac will end in October 2026; continued support depends on your Microsoft 365, Office, or Outlook license.

What dark mode changes in a message
The appearance setting controls Outlook’s interface, but Microsoft’s Mac-specific instructions do not establish that every email’s message-body colors or original formatting will invert. A message may therefore look different from Outlook’s surrounding interface; the documented guidance does not specify a separate Mac fix for that case.
