Outlook Copilot Missing or Disabled? Check These Fixes

Microsoft is investigating missing Copilot buttons in some classic Outlook for Windows builds. Check the affected client and try the listed workarounds, then verify account access, updates, mailbox support, and Connected Experiences settings.

If Copilot is missing or grayed out in Outlook, first check whether you’re using classic Outlook for Windows: Microsoft is investigating a documented issue affecting that client on build 20026.20182 and later. Try new Outlook or Outlook on the web for immediate access; if you need classic Outlook, Microsoft’s current workarounds are to create a new profile or turn on Show Apps in Outlook. These are workarounds, not a confirmed permanent fix. Microsoft’s notice was last updated September 15, 2026, and lists the issue as under investigation.

1. Check whether the known classic Outlook issue applies

Microsoft reports that after classic Outlook for Windows updates to build 20026.20182 or later, Copilot Chat or other Copilot entry points may disappear for people with Copilot Chat (Basic) or M365 Copilot (Premium). Symptoms include a missing button above the ribbon, a missing icon in the left app bar or More Apps area, an item under Add Apps that does nothing when opened, or a grayed-out Copilot ribbon command. Microsoft attributes its investigation to Outlook being unable to locate the MAPI property PR_PROFILE_USER_SMTP_EMAIL_ADDRESS_W within the null profile section, which can prevent the Copilot component from saving related settings. The issue notice remains marked Investigating; Microsoft has not given a resolution date. Check Microsoft’s current notice for status changes.

Use one of Microsoft’s listed workarounds

  1. Switch clients: Open new Outlook or Outlook on the web. This is the quickest route if your account and organization support the feature.
  2. Create a new classic Outlook profile: Set up a fresh profile, then open Outlook with it and check whether Copilot appears.
  3. Enable apps in Outlook: In classic Outlook, go to File > Options > Advanced. Under Outlook panes, select Show Apps in Outlook.

Microsoft lists these as workarounds, not a guaranteed repair. The issue applies to classic Outlook for Windows; it should not be assumed to affect every Outlook client. Microsoft’s issue index also lists the missing-buttons problem as under investigation. See the classic Outlook issue index.

2. Confirm your account and Copilot access

A missing button can also mean the signed-in account does not have the entitlement for the feature you expect, or that an organization controls access. For a work or school account, check the Copilot label shown under your name on the Microsoft 365 home page. Microsoft identifies labels including Copilot Chat (Basic), M365 Copilot (Basic), and M365 Copilot (Premium); what each label enables differs. If you cannot see the label or are unsure what it includes, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to confirm your assigned license and any organizational policy. Microsoft explains how to identify a Copilot license.

4. Check which mailbox and Outlook client you’re using

Outlook Copilot scenarios have mailbox limitations that can make a button or feature unavailable even when your account has Copilot access:

5. Review Connected Experiences privacy settings

Copilot access across Outlook apps requires Connected Experiences not to be turned off. Review your Microsoft 365 privacy settings and, on a managed account, ask your administrator whether an organization policy disables connected experiences. Microsoft also says its connected-account sharing capability is not available in classic Outlook for Windows; that limitation is separate from the missing-buttons investigation. 6. Choose a route if Copilot is still unavailable

Route Best when What to know
New Outlook or Outlook on the web You need to reach Copilot without waiting for classic Outlook troubleshooting. Microsoft lists both as workarounds for the classic Outlook issue. Your account, mailbox, and organization still need to support the relevant feature.
New classic Outlook profile You must remain in classic Outlook and can set up a separate profile. Microsoft lists this as a workaround; it does not publish a success rate or guarantee.
Turn on Show Apps in Outlook You want to stay in classic Outlook and the apps display setting is available. Use File > Options > Advanced > Outlook panes, then enable Show Apps in Outlook.
Contact your administrator Your account is managed, or license, policy, mailbox hosting, or update channel is uncertain. Ask IT to verify entitlement, organizational settings, Exchange Online mailbox status, and the Microsoft 365 update channel.

If the issue continues, use new Outlook or the web client if permitted, and have your administrator check managed settings. Microsoft’s cited notice does not state when a permanent fix will be available.
