Can Google Slides Outline Text Directly?
Google Slides supports border styling on shapes, including WordArt. Regular text boxes are primarily for typography (font, size, color, alignment), and they don’t reliably expose a true “text outline/stroke” control.

So if you’re trying to outline letters and you only see font color options, that’s normal. Switch to WordArt for the standard solution, or use an SVG for a stroke-accurate alternative.
Best Method: Use WordArt for Outlined Letters
This method uses WordArt’s built-in border (outline) and fill color settings. It’s the fastest way to get a clean outlined-letter look that you can resize and style freely.
Create WordArt with your text
In your Google Slides file, go to Insert → Word art. Type your text in the Word art editor (for example, OUTLINE).
Make the inside transparent
Select the WordArt object. In the toolbar, set the Fill color to Transparent.
- Click the Fill color paint bucket.
- Choose Transparent (or the transparent/no-fill option, depending on your UI theme).
If transparent fill isn’t available in your view, check that you selected the WordArt itself (not just the text cursor inside it).
Add an outline (border) and set thickness
With the WordArt still selected, set the border/outline color and thickness.
- Click the Border color option (the outline/edge color icon).
- Pick a color that contrasts your background (for example, white outline on dark slides).
- Adjust Border width (sometimes shown as a thickness slider or a dropdown). Start around 2–4 pt for most title sizes.
After you set thickness, click anywhere else to confirm the WordArt updates.

Choose a border style that matches your design
Google Slides often lets you pick between solid border styles and other visual variants depending on your selection and theme. For outlined letters, solid usually reads best in presentations.
- Use solid outlines for headings and slide titles.
- Use higher contrast for busy backgrounds (photos, gradients).

Keep the outline crisp (alignment and scaling)
Outlines get softer when you scale text down too far, especially on low-resolution displays. If the slide will be projected, test at 100% zoom first, then check again at typical presentation size.
- Use large font sizes (titles often work well at 60–120 pt, depending on slide layout).
- Resize using the WordArt corner handles while holding the object proportionally.
- Avoid repeated “undo/redo” resizing; it can lead to tiny layout shifts.
Alternative Method: Use SVG Text Stroke (True Outline)
If you want precise stroke behavior (like you’d expect from professional design tools), SVG is the cleanest workaround. You create an SVG with text “stroke” and import it as an image.
Generate an SVG with stroke
Create a simple SVG file. Here’s a working template you can copy into a file named something like outlined-text.svg.

After insertion, click the image to select it and resize to your layout.
Adjust size without losing quality
SVGs scale better than raster images because they’re vector-based. Still, very small on-screen sizes can make thin strokes hard to read.
- If your outline looks thin, increase stroke-width in the SVG and re-import.
- For titles, plan for a bold stroke (often 6–14 in an SVG sized like the template above).
Multi-Step Workflows That Produce Better Results
The “outlined letters” look varies depending on whether you want hollow text, a filled title with an outline, or readable contrast on photos.
Outlined letters with a solid fill behind (shadowed outline)
WordArt supports both border and fill. That means you can create a “outlined but still readable” look by using a subtle fill color and a stronger border.

- Create WordArt with your text.
- Set Fill color to a semi-contrasting color (white, light gray, or the brand color).
- Set Border color to a high-contrast color (usually white or black).
- Use a border width around 2–6 pt depending on font size.
This is especially useful when the background is bright or patterned.
Outlined letters on photos (contrast tuning)
Photos can reduce outline readability. You’ll get a better result by controlling the background behind the text.

- Or place the text on a cleaner area of the photo.
- Use white outline with a dark translucent backing for near-universal readability.
Outlined letters for presentations (safe sizing)
Outlined text needs extra thickness compared to standard filled text. If you’re presenting on a projector, plan for larger sizes and thicker borders.
- Start with a font size around 72–120 pt for main titles.
- Use border width around 3–8 pt.
- Do a quick slide show test from the presenter laptop.
If the outline disappears at distance, increase border width first, then adjust the font size.

Most outline issues come from selecting the wrong object type, using a too-thin border, or resizing in a way that reduces clarity.
There is no outline option for my text box
That’s expected for plain text. Google Slides doesn’t offer a reliable stroke setting for standard text boxes.
- Delete or replace the text box.
- Use Insert → Word art.
- Set Fill color to Transparent.
- Set Border color and Border width.
The outline is too thick/thin after resizing
WordArt border appearance can change visually when the object is scaled, especially if you’re resizing a lot.
- Re-select the WordArt and adjust Border width after the final size.
- For consistency across slides, lock in sizes early and avoid repeated scaling.
The outline is blurry or pixelated
Blurriness can happen if you’re exporting or rendering on a low-resolution device, or if you’re using a raster image instead of vector text.
- Prefer the WordArt method (vector-like) over screenshot-based outlines.
- For SVG, re-import after adjusting stroke width if the stroke is too thin.
- Check your slide zoom and do a quick full-screen test.
The border won’t show on a dark background
If the border color matches the background, it will effectively disappear.

- Open the Border color picker.
- Select a contrasting color (white outline on dark backgrounds is a common default).
- If readability is still poor, add a translucent shape behind the text.
My SVG outline doesn’t render
SVG import issues are usually caused by formatting or missing attributes.
- Make sure the SVG uses
xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg". - Confirm the
strokeandstroke-widthvalues are present. - Try changing
font-familyto a common one likeArialor removing the font-family entirely.
If the outline still fails, fall back to WordArt for a guaranteed result.
